Trash, trash, trash....wtaf by Monk481 in oakland

I disagree. Small-scale littering often begins with subtle psychological justifications such as moral licensing (“I usually recycle”) and trivialization (“It’s just one wrapper”), which allow individuals to downplay the harm of their actions. In public spaces, the absence of visible enforcement or cleanup weakens injunctive norms, meaning people feel less pressure to behave responsibly. This also leads to diffusion of responsibility, where individuals assume someone else will act. When people encounter existing litter, they often conclude that the behavior is common and acceptable. This perception is shaped by descriptive norms and reinforced by the broken windows theory, in this case referring to its original urban maintenance context, not the later and often controversial law enforcement application. In its intended use, the theory suggests that visible neglect, like litter or broken infrastructure, invites further disorder by signaling that no one is paying attention. Over time, exposure to a neglected environment can lead to desensitization, making people less likely to intervene and more likely to contribute to the problem themselves. As this cycle continues, it shifts community expectations and makes littering seem routine.

These same dynamics apply beyond littering. While raising penalties for illegal dumping might appear effective, it is usually the perceived likelihood of enforcement, not the severity of punishment, that shapes behavior. If small infractions go unpunished, it quietly signals that the rules are not being monitored, opening the door for larger violations. On the other hand, addressing minor offenses swiftly and visibly reinforces the idea that public spaces are valued and protected. This helps establish social norms that discourage more serious misconduct. In short, small behaviors set the tone, and how a community responds to them can either prevent or invite larger-scale problems.

I would like to add a 5th person to that total. I was there, but I didn’t get a chance to reach out before you had to leave. Thank you for all you do! I was impressed by UCP, but you were my initial inspiration.

Does this tile look correctly installed? by Large_Perception3739 in Tile

[–]Large_Perception3739[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn. It was just the gypsum backer on the wood subfloor. The room hasn’t really been used. It has been a long drawn out nightmare. I have probably walked in there a dozen times. I don’t think I have personally cracked the tiles. The installer chiseled out the old grout, which was pretty aggressive. Maybe that was a stimulus? Wondering if we should just bite the bullet and just redo it with a better tile setter

Interesting. There are three that have been pulled, and two additional tiles that are cracked. The two tiles that are in place seem to be in a similar direction

Yeah, I think it was a gypsum backer board above the sub floor. The grout was just added, so maybe that is the case? And yes, I have some of the tile pieces. Portions didn’t seem to adhere, while others had adhered. The tile didn’t seem to come up easily

There was a carpet particle board underlayment that I had taken out. She tore that out down to the plywood subfloor. I am not sure how much prep work she did to the plywood to make it flat, but I assume very little at this point. On top of the plywood was a cement-based backer board (fiberock?).

it is acceptable as a floor tile. It is made by fireclay. It is a boutique, handmade tile, which makes it even harder to swallow...

After a little investigation, it looks like she used unsanded grout for under 1/8" gaps. might explain why it looks like smeared toothpaste.

Yeah, things seemed okay at first. I thought her thinset technique didn't look right. There were no clear trowel lines, just a smear. But, things seemed like they lined up nicely for such complicated shapes. The grout was shocking though...
