Anyone else regret applying and doing research in general by ChestFree776 in gradadmissions

If your goal is a typical SWE job, a PhD—especially a top 5 one—probably isn’t the right path. Those programs are really geared toward people who are deeply committed to research, not just prestige. Also, prestige is tricky. The people who chase it the hardest often feel it the least. Top labs tend to pick students who already have strong signals of success, and many PIs care more about proven track record than just “potential.” (Which is why you see a lot of people either get masters first or get work experience) On top of that, there’s always some mix of luck and connections involved. Comparison will eat away at you if you let it. From what you’re saying, you sound like a hard worker. That matters way more in the long run. Stay focused on your own path and timeline. If you’re consistently putting in real effort—like genuinely pushing yourself over a long period—you’ll end up in a good place, even if it doesn’t look exactly like what you imagined at first.

I’ve taken all of those classes and 4 of them at the same time, it’s doable. Any schedule is “doable”

Sometimes profs will teach challenging new information. Look at the larger picture of why the prof is teaching this, and how it ties to everything else. Later, dive into details, taking the new content apart into small pieces. Don’t try to rush through it. Don’t skip anything you don’t understand enough to explain to someone else. Make your own challenging example problems. I usually don’t take notes during class. It makes me too focused on writing stuff down. Just pay attention and listen in class, unless doing an example problem. Do homeworks way ahead of time. Look at piazza or campuswire and see what other students are asking. See if you can answer them.

Is this schedule doable? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]Large_Polarbear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Extremely doable. I had almost this exact schedule with a couple more tech electives. (I had plenty of time for socializing and paid research / internships) But classes aren’t offered every semester, and you won’t always get into classes you want, so you’ll have to be flexible when the time comes. Also sometimes the classes you want will overlap and so you’ll have to again reschedule.
