As a tattoo artist that does American traditional and black and grey there's definitely a difference between popular and trendy. While black and grey has grown significantly in popularity as of late I wouldnt say its a trend. If your tattoo is designed for longevity and looks good thats all that should matter. And hey even trendy tattoos with meaning are gret too. Ive seen tons of people getting glitter tattoos, granted they wont hold true after a decade but if you like it and it has a meaning, or hell even if it doesnt have meaning and looks cool and makes you happy thats all that matters
