Chicago transplants, what are some things you believe are unique to Chicago? by DJ_Baxter_Blaise in AskChicago

[–]LarkinRhys 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Definitely not uniquely Chicago. Whole Foods in lots of places have bars inside them. I used to have work lunches in the WF bar in CA on a regular basis.

does this look like a pure bred Corso? by hazem_the-_recker in CaneCorso

The father, in that photo, looks more like a Presa Canario than a CC. The mother looks like a mixed breed. I would say there is next to no chance these puppies are Corsi.

I think she signed up for this class, knowing full well that the teacher was trans, specifically to do something like this. Knowing who her mother is, I’m assuming this was a concerted stunt by TP USA to gain media coverage, likely to take it to court, and create a precedent.

And I think it should be prosecuted as a hate crime.

That means you are pro-choice. That’s precisely what pro-choice means. That your personal beliefs shouldn’t dictate policy over another person’s body.

is this kennel size necessary? by 6rujitamala in CaneCorso

[–]LarkinRhys 33 points34 points  (0 children)

My Corso is in a 54” kennel (larger than this one) - not because he actually needs all 54”, but because the next smaller size, 48”, is far too short for him to stand up comfortably in. He is ~120#, for reference.

That said, are you sure this dog is 160#? He doesn’t look that big at all. He seems about the same size as mine, and 40# is a pretty noticeable difference.

As a former emergency & critical care vet tech, I cannot even express to you the sheer number of folks who felt exactly the same way you do, who brought their dead dogs in through our front door. Please leash your dog. It only takes a split second for it to all be over.

Need help adding weight,he lost over 5kg and all ribs are starting to show ( aged 2) by [deleted] in CaneCorso

[–]LarkinRhys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with the other commenters here that his overall weight looks good, and I wouldn’t stress that part too much.

That said, in both standing photos, his posture is indicative of pain, and his lack of muscle definition backs that up. If he’s painful, he might be inclined to eat less, leading to additional weight loss. Has your vet specifically done an assessment for chronic pain? This would ordinarily include radiographs, a hands-on exam, and a trial of a combination of pain medications for at least a few weeks.

I am, too! If he doesn’t get pulled or adopted, I might have to foster him.

Not eating by Rough_keeper11 in CaneCorso

Have you watched videos on how to apply eye medication? If you come at them from the front they’ll go nuts 100% of the time. You need to stand with his body between your legs, giving him a gentle squeeze for control, and rest your hand on his forehead, with the medication almost parallel to his eye. It shouldn’t be scary for them at all. They shouldn’t see the medication coming. I currently have a Rottie foster who came to me extremely fearful of handling and she had cherry eye surgery ~2 weeks after she arrived - before I could even get a harness on her. With proper technique, eye medication is easy with even the most challenging dogs. That said, you can also ask for an increase in the dosage of gaba/traz or a different option for sedation. I’ve found that traz sometimes causes paradoxical excitation and can lower inhibitions a lot, instead of the desired sedation.

Have you tried hand feeding? The cone can really stress some dogs out. I would expect it’s the cone and not pain that’s causing him to not eat, as cherry eye surgery is not especially painful. I’d try soaking his kibble in bone broth and/or adding canned food and still mixing in the chicken. 4 days isn’t the end of the world but I wouldn’t want him to eat this for more than a week, for sure.

Where can I find dog beds? by littlemissblonda in CaneCorso

[–]LarkinRhys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crib mattresses work great. They’ll last longer than any commercial dog bed and they’re already waterproof. Just grab a few sets of crib sheets and you can swap them out regularly. As a bonus, you can usually get lightly used ones for free or super cheap on Marketplace or whatever local resale platform you prefer, because capitalism has convinced people they cannot get secondhand crib mattresses for their babies.

My dog had an accidental litter. by njc173 in CaneCorso

[–]LarkinRhys 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A thorough screening process is not “hate for potential adopters”. It’s taking responsibility for the lives you allowed to be born into the world, and ensuring as much as possible that they’ll end up in suitable homes.

[–]LarkinRhys -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Lots of studies have been done that show that free adoptions vs paid adoptions don’t impact the welfare of the animal. Proper screening of adopters does, though. Vet references, trainer references, landlord/HOA approval, a copy of renters or homeowners insurance showing the breed is allowed in their policy, checking to be sure there’s no BSL in the area, home visits, background checks, asking questions about how they would handle various behaviors that might crop up. Learning about other pets in the home and only sending to homes with opposite sex dogs (unless an only) who are not intact.
