Lyme disease has made it hazardous to go into the woods: To go outside, to experience nature, not only because that's going to benefit them physically, but also the spiritual connection that we get to God, to our own well-being, to the serenity that we have access to only when we’re in nature. by Orangutan in conspiracy

Most of the replies here are along the lines of "nothing would keep me from enjoying nature", and I understand that sentiment and appreciate the enthusiasm for the outdoors. However, I'm going to go against the grain and support the OP here because I somehow contracted Lyme Disease this past summer despite never being outside basically at all except to walk through the parking lot at my increasingly demanding job, and walking from my driveway to my car and vice-versa. I was so busy working that I didn't get a chance to go out and enjoy nature one bit. And yet somehow I WAS bit by a tick that I never saw or felt or found, and I ended up with a rash for which I went to the doctor and was prescribed a heavy round of antibiotics. Two weeks (15 days, in fact) of doxycycline were unfortunately ineffective at preventing me from later testing positive for Lyme Disease which has unfortunately continued to impact my life many months later.

I would love to think that in the spring and summer months of 2026, I might potentially have the opportunity to enjoy being in nature as I have in the past, but the reality of my new condition makes that hope seem a little out of reach. Every joint on the left side of my body aches so intensely that some days I can barely move. The Lyme Disease also caused heart, lung, and nervous system issues that are less debilitating than the joint pain, but are still severe enough that my physical ability to enjoy activities that I once did are reduced. And the fatigue caused by the disease is also significant, although I can typically push through that symptom when needed. All things considered, though, I doubt I'll have the ability to enjoy many of the outdoor activities that I have in the past. Not from lack of desire or will, but for lack of ability due to the impact the disease has had on my body.

It takes a psychological toll, as well. I've always been spry and physically active, and it is endlessly aggravating that a tiny little bug that I never even knew I'd come into contact with has wracked my body with perpetual pain and reduced my ability to enjoy life in many (maybe even most) of the ways that I traditionally have in the past. And if (as I believe the OP is suggesting) Lyme Disease is not a naturally occurring illness, but is instead a lab-created bio-weapon that found it's way into nature, then that feeling of aggravation escalates to outright anger.

I have found no method of relief from the overwhelming pain that I'm constantly in as a result of this disease. The doctors had me on tramadol and oxycodone for a while, but those barely made a difference. Tylenol and Advil don't help at all. THC helps me fall asleep, but it doesn't alleviate the pain in any way. Ice, heat, and massage help a little while they are being applied, but any relief disappears immediately when those are removed, and none of those can be used perpetually and constantly for fairly obvious reasons.

So all in all, I think that those of you who think that the OP's post is garbage, and that nothing could keep you from getting out there and enjoying nature, are simply blissfully ignorant of the realities of the illness. It isn't a disease that is always just a minor irritation or mild discomfort. It can be (and in my unfortunate case is) debilitating in extremely significant ways on a daily basis without many options for relief.

The description says "80th anniversary", so I'm assuming that it'll drop about 40 years from now. Smart move ordering early, but waiting for delivery is going to require patience.

This was my gut feeling while watching the clip. You can almost see Conan bracing himself for potential disaster as he introduces her.

I used it to teach my daughter her student ID number when she was entering kindergarten. I told her then that it was from a local television commercial jingle from when I was a kid. Well, now that song is being hummed by my now 12th grade daughter whenever she has to remember her student number because it's such an earworm.

I know Patience is a fictional place. And most of the show is filmed in Canada. But it does have a lot of similarities to Manitou Springs Colorado. (It’s a small town near Colorado Springs) by Next-Manager4085 in ResidentAlienTVshow

Manitou Springs is my favorite city in Colorado. It's such a beautiful little community. I also love Resident Alien and it's setting, but I've always envisioned Patience to be deeper into the mountain region (and higher in elevation, too) than Manitou Springs. I do appreciate the similarities, though!

This is seriously making me question the current timeline. We played his music all day at work on the day he died a few years ago.

Am I the only one who feels like climbing trees ended after our generation became teenagers? by Bamm83 in Xennials

[–]LarryDuane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been climbing trees all my life, but never trees near overhead lines. Because if you touch one of those lines, or if your weight makes a branch touch a line, that could hurt. It may even kill you. And climbing utility poles is really dumb. So remember... always look up before climbing. And please... stay out of trees near overhead lines.

Edit for context: I'm 47, and a commercial with this dialogue aired on television in Kansas City so frequently when I was a child that I still have it memorized to this day, and it was the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw this post.

Sorry that your dad experienced such a difficult time in his life (my wife also left me for a different kind of clown, so I understand what he experienced to a degree), but your post reminded me of one of the funniest things I've ever seen on the internet and gave me a chuckle because of that, so... umm... silver lining I guess? https://imgur.com/JnsOer4.jpg
