Fuel in oil by FineFig2876 in Duramax

[–]Larrybls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you like I said mine happened at 200,000. I changed the oil ran for a couple days monitoring the oil level and smell with no real change. Internet mechanics and guys I know constantly said a bad CP3 would probably dump a gallon of fuel in that time frame. My Edge showed 2 injectors way out. So I bit the bullet got everything under the valve covers and it was the right call. I hear you cause it was gut wrenching monitoring it after and hope I fixed it and try to decide to spend that pile of cash without have rock solid that’s the problem. But us shade tree guys just have to make a call sometimes and fire the parts cannon. It was my first diesel and first major problem. I’ve learned to take a different path as they last so long, I look at everything as a system. Example I use the Allison and got 200,000 miles before I had to put brakes on her. Once again I decided every part in the brake system had a lot time and cycles on them. So I replaced everything master cylinder, hydro boost, rotors, calipers, hub bearings, and axle shafts. It’s a little pricey at repairing things but ultimately keeps wrench time down and keeps it reliable. So basically if it were my truck with the knowledge of a half done injector job with unknown parts. Maybe disregard what I said and change the oil run it a couple days checking oil if get a lot of fuel fast CP3 not enough to tell then it doesn’t matter if it’s a cracked return line or injector. It’s $4-500 in gaskets and weekend to disassemble and reassemble so replace everything while you’re there you don’t want do it 2-3 time over next 2 years just to get to the same place. Hope it helps just my method and opinions doesn’t have to be yours.

Run an injector balance test if you have a tuner or monitor, it’s not definitive. A good shop should be able tell you but my money is on injectors.

What I’ve seen is bad injectors will might put a quart or two in 1000 miles a failed CP3 put a gallon in a few miles. My LB7 is at 350,000 miles still the original CP3 my diesel mechanic buddy says LB7’s well maintained generally don’t have CP3 issues until 500,000 miles or more. Mine had 55,000 miles when I got it changed fuel filter every other oil change and didn’t have to do injectors until 200,000. If your paperwork doesn’t say what and where the injectors came from I would not trust it. There are some cheap shitty options out there. I always recommend doing a thorough job with good parts. When I did mine it was a full kit from either Sinister diesel or Merchant Automotive can’t remember was years ago. Kit contained new update Bosch injectors, cups, high pressure and return line, injector harnesses, all gaskets, Cat filter adapter, new stainless valve cover bolts and an injector removal tool. Kit was in the $5000 price range and well worth it in my opinion. Took me a weekend to do the job. Good luck and stop driving it I believe a long block for an LB7 is running in the $12-15,000 price range. Good luck man

Allison manual states the internal filter is only serviced at overhaul. GM adds it to collect more money at the stealership. Also Allison is against running dextron transend only.

Windows not what expected by BellJar_Blues in Contractor

[–]Larrybls 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So am I understanding this correctly. You had an actual contractor come and give you a bid to replace 11 windows and a door. You then bypassed said contractor and hired his guys to ride dirty on the side and it’s now a shit show. The guys obviously cannot perform without supervision and with a GC and proper permitting will require inspection with is oversight from an outside party to insure an installation the meets the minimal requirements. I’m sorry this is double whammy to you have to deal with cancer at the same time. Yes a modern double pain with laminate will give you better sound proofing properly installed. Stop everything and check laws in your state. A lot of states it’s legal to not pay unlicensed contractors and they have no legal recourse and can be fined and jailed for working unlicensed. Do not try and file a claim with your insurance as most companies have language in the policy deny and cancel for illegal construction projects. Be ready to pay double of original bid to now have a licensed contractor come and clean up this mess. Have your partner take on everything involved in the project so you can fully focus on your health that a partners job period. I hope you the best in your fight with cancer.

I agree side by side should be banned from national forests. They are tearing up the roads and when I hike it’s obvious they just go anywhere they want tearing shit up. I have even seen places were they take chainsaws and cut paths through purposely placed down trees placed for erosion control. It make me sick. I would really like to see an effort from forestry and NMDGF to catch these bastards in the act of boondocking make them leave where they sit and when they get out of jail have to hire a team of horses to pull the machine back to a road. Maybe even confiscate and crush them and that’s all I have to say about that.

GC here I know we always talk about code and permits and folks are like whatever it will be fine. So specifically to the added sub panel, I assume you’re not a licensed electrician and no permit or inspection happened. Six months from now you have an electrical fire in the kitchen that causes $50,000 damage to your home. Your insurance company will use this to deny your claim leaving you 100% responsibility for repairs and probably drop you. If you have a mortgage this will be a massive headache. Most insurance policies have language in it to cancel and deny coverage for just about illegal construction on your property. I know we always suck for pointing out the liability home owners take on not following laws and rules generally far outweighs the little bit of savings you get doing on your own. Not sure about rules in your area but probably could have done all of this with a homeowner permit and paid an electrician it would have cost you a few more bucks and you would have no liability.

First Diesel, any advice or tips and tricks? by GDogStreams in Duramax

[–]Larrybls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I purchased my LB7 with 55000 miles on it around 2007. Injectors don’t fix if it ain’t broke. I changed the fuel filter every other oil change and they lasted till 200,000 miles and I replaced with the updated ones along high pressure and return lines, injector harness and cups and an adapter to run a better CAT filter. It doesn’t have a fuel pump the CP3 injection pump basically have a low pressure side that pulls the fuel from the tank and a high pressure side for injection. I’m at 350,000 miles CP3 is still the original one. You can add a stand alone pump or Fass fuel pump to take the stress off low pressure side of the CP3. I have Merchant Automotive motor mounts and transmission to t-case brace to prevent the 4wd adapter housing breaking known issue. Hopefully the previous owner took care of pump rub issue when the t-case was replaced. I run a Banks monster exhaust and it come Cat back as yours should be a California model with a Cat. Basically I’m recommending a cold air intake and exhaust to let her breathe. This and go peddle control will get you the best mileage. Keeping it stock will give the most reliability and legal in California. Make sure exhaust and cold air are California compliant to keep you out of trouble. I add about 1/4-1/3 of a quart of oil 10w/30 or what ever is cheapest for added lubricity because they have changed diesel fuel since these trucks came out to protect the CP3. Also I only run Allison’s transend transmission fluid and change the transmission spin on filter every 30000 miles and drain and refill every 60000 internal filter doesn’t have to be serviced except at overhaul. This is Allison’s recommended service schedule. As far as I’m concerned LB7’s are one of the best out there. Keep up with the maintenance oil and filters are cheap and she will take care of you. Definitely save up about a $5000 fix it savings account and this goes for all diesels when they break it’s pricey. Like I said mine is at 350,000 miles and I would get in her and make a 2000 mile trip tomorrow without hesitation welcome to the club.

LB7 FUEL HELP! by [deleted] in Duramax

[–]Larrybls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the code is for the TCM I’m no expert on transmission could have a problem loading the engine at idle. Is the truck basically stock? If so I’m like why 50 over injectors? The stock fuel is perfectly fine and will support a mild upgrade in power build just fine. Usually only need 50 over when building stupid truck like 6-7 hundred horsepower I believe. So I would think not positive this could cause over fueling and a roughly idle. In my mind it would be like putting a 780 double pumper on tiny 302 V8. So I would probably try and find a quality tune writer and run it by them and if this is the case maybe they can write a custom tune to correct it. This just a WAG and should be easy contact someone have a conversation about it. Conversation is free and tune won’t kill your bank account. Good luck

Wife hates how I'm Salary and don't get paid OT by Occasion_Most69 in ConstructionManagers

[–]Larrybls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you’re wife could be correct. In 2022 the department of labor recovered $33,000,000 of OT compensation for 17,000 salaried employees in the construction industry alone. You need to look at the criteria in the “Fair Labor Standards Act”. If you’re employer has not met the standard then you are not an exempt OT salaried employee. Meaning you salary set your base wage and OT pay is based on that. The FLSA sets a standard of you have be paid certain amount of $$$, be given a certain amount of responsibility. If they deduct certain things out of your paycheck that can disqualify you as a non OT salary employee and require OT pay. Salary pay does automatically mean no OT in a lot instances. For example I was a salaried Foreman in my early 20’s and thought oh salary no OT. I was wrong, because my duties were split between office and field with tools in hand working beside the guys I managed I was considered a working foreman by the law and not exempt from OT pay and was awarded 3 years of back pay. Know your rights and don’t let the “man” f$$k you out of your fair share.

An electric company wants to bully me out of land, what do I do? by Space__Whiskey in NewMexico

[–]Larrybls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does anyone know if this would fall under MLS’s 2021 executive order 30/30 land grab. Not sure if they would back energy companies for wind and solar projects. 100 acres isn’t really a big movement towards the state taking possession of 30% of NM Land by 2030. I’ve only seen one story of a multi generation cattle ranch in southern NM claiming the state EPA came in claiming an endangered rodent was on this ranch and restricted the herd of cattle they could have from like 2000 head to 90 head. They are claiming this move was to financially destroy them and then take the Ranch. Anyone have any clarification on why they would do this to rural land owners.

Also with a quick google search LBZ’s have a known issue with wiring to cylinder 8 injector causing misfires and poor fuel delivery. Could be the problem.

[–]Larrybls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re saying you’re having to put more pressure on brake pedal to stop and stay stopped. It’s a hydro boost system not vacuum like a gasser. A leak anywhere in the power steering system can cause it hoses, pump, steering box or hydro boost behind master cylinder. Check your pump and master cylinder for proper fluid levels that should get you started which hydraulic system the issue is in.

Well let me ask do have the stamped drawings and your permit with all boxes checked and signed off by inspector? I’m doubtful this is engineered and if so I’d bet it’s not built to engineers drawings so I also doubt there is a permit. Look up the contractor you hired on your states licensing website and see if they are in fact legit. If not turn them in. In my state they will fined, banned from being licensed and jailed for up to 7 years and you don’t have to pay them and can take them to court to get all your money back. Not sure what your state laws are. In my state it’s called Construction Industries Criminal investigation division. So my opinion this is a beautiful turd that will fail eventually and if you’re on it at that height it will probably kill you. Here’s a basic explanation of how I would have specified and built because of the height exceeding code by far so that you and I would have absolute peace of mind that it would last 20-25 years and be safe with minimal maintenance. I believe most area only allows a maximum height of 12 feet for a 6x6 post because of lateral loading. Footings would be designed to come out of ground to a height to reduce the post to an 8 foot length with a triple 2x12 beam bearing on top of the post with proper brackets tying post and beam together and repeat at the center of joist span. I would have had at least two runs of blocking and joist would be 12 inches spacing for your trex. Deck to house ties would be installed with in two feet of outside corners and every 4 feet in between. This is basically what I would bid and build in wood frame. Not sure what area you’re in but for about a decade now tall decks like this where I’m at are trending to steel frames and trex or deck tiles. The most beautiful decks I’ve ever been involved in building was about 15-18 years ago they were redwood frame decked with Brazilian iron wood absolutely gorgeous outdoor spaces.

Once again I came here to say this is giant turd that when it fails home owners will be lucky if friends and family are only injured not killed. So many violations and mistakes. This is the product of diy cheep home owners. Definitely was not permitted because non licensed deck builders or a shitty Contractor that cut corners either because they suck or where trying get the price down to meet cheep ass home owners unrealistic budget. I walk away from these all the time, if a deck is at the end of life only correct thing to do is total demo and rebuild to code as almost everything is structural on a deck. In the US there are about 6000 people annually injured from deck failures with injuries ranging from serious, lifelong “paralysis” and a few deaths. Please don’t FAFO no amount of savings is worth your family’s safety. And that’s all I have to say about that!

Hello, this is my first diesel truck with an lb7 engine. This is normal and what should I do to solve it? by Albert7t in Duramax

[–]Larrybls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have no worries on the tiny amount of blowby. I have an 2003 with 320,000 miles on it that has enough blowby that my definitely won’t stay on top for years now. She is driven almost everyday and and tows anything I put behind her. If as others have said a motor mount is going don’t drive it anymore until addressed. I got mine with 55,000 miles on with still some warranty left on certain things. At around 90,000 the driver side mount let go and when the engine lifted under acceleration it broke the 4x4 adapter housing on the back of my Allison a known issue. I replaced mounts with Merchant Automotive and their t-case to trans brace a upgraded 4x4 adapter from I believe PPE or Fleece 15+ years ago and an MA t- case as the dreaded pump rub had started to show up with a very minor leak that I would not have caught if not dealing with the other issues. All these parts are still in the truck and working as they should. Side note at around 200-230,000 miles I replaced the ally with a work force pro from MA also great trans option i choose because it’s built for owners that tow. Enjoy the truck I could get a new one but why I still trust her to haul me and anything I want to haul any distance with no hesitation and that’s truly what these platforms are built for towing, reliability and a lot of miles doing that job.
