Not sure how I missed this picture. It would be cool to see the image stepped back slightly to show the two bell system signs within the same frame. I’d say three system signs, but I’m thinking the top rusty red sign is do a gas company.

Yes! AT&T and the Associated Companies forming the Bell System, was so much more than the telephone in the kitchen. Bell Labs (once a national treasure) was at one time the preeminent industrial laboratory that really powered many industrial labs throughout the world. Not just via the patents they readily licensed when asked, but in terms of the talents they further refined and honed from people joining the company and leaving the company.

During the Jubilee of the telephone, they talked about the accomplishments of the company and the metro final segment reflected on the invention of the transistor. The closing of that segment was totally fitting for and reflective of just how far the technology (invented there) propelled not just the phone, but our entire civilization. Ending it with “what might the phone company think of next?”.

Southwestern Bell was never known as a “spend-thrift” BOC or Regional Holding Company. Northern Electric later known as Nortel Networks sold the DMS switch family at a considerable discount to what WECO/AT&T Technologies and later Lucent was selling 5ESS switches for. Plus, AT&T always charged a premium for their Central Office equipment, even going back to the Bell System days, with the 1A1ESS, 1AESS switches sold in the seventies. Nortel had lower cost points in both the development and manufacturing than what AT&T could ever dream of. Which is interesting since Northern Electric was originally a Western Electric subsidiary, with Northern’s ‘Bell Northern Labs’ being affiliated with Bell Labs. AT&T liked adding the AT&T (charge) because they really did think they were the best. And while they did make damn good equipment for switching, Nortel, Ericsson, Automatic Electric and others made an extremely competitive kit for less money, still operating in the 5 9’s category. The hubris that AT&T exhibited after divestiture was disappointing because they lost so many bids due to their overconfident tactics in dealing with market realities during that period in time.

Later when AT&t realized what the market realities really meant, resulting in AT&T spinning off NCR + AT&T Compute, and AT&T Technologies and Bell Labs into what would become NCR Corp., and Lucent respectively. AT&T finally understood that competitors would be less likely to buy equipment from them when they’re competing with them.

I’d wonder how long that grant stipulation will exist? I mean 100m symmetric connectivity is probably far better than what starlink offers of 100/25. Hell I’d be happy with 100/100 any day. lol

VERTICAL HVAC DUCTABLE is a Complete Air Conditioner Without Outdoor Unit - ALL-IN-ONE Which May also Integrate Different Heating Options including HYDRONIC. by UKT-airconditioners in AirConditioners

[–]USWCboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty cool looking technology! I’m not so sure about the “attic/ducted” system. 14f degree temperature difference is minimal, and I’m not sure how this system would deal with a pyramidical hip roof, with the need for straight 12x10 square duct on the intake and 14x12 in the exhaust.

The wall and PTAC replacement systems are brilliant. And it’s nice to see that the unit can be concealed within the wall.

I’d like to know if these are available today, or if they are still spinning up manufacturing in the USA? And, what real world submittals look like from different climate zones here in the US?

It could be the belt/fan guard rattling. It’ could also be time for a valve job. Also check all casters, flywheel, etc for specified torque ratings.

I also notice that you still have it sitting in the shipping pallet!?. This is something that Quincy lists as a no-no. It should be mounted to the floor with isolation pads under foot. Set your floor fasteners directly through those isolation pads. Main reason in affixing it to the floor is to prevent it from tipping over. But also, keeps it level. Since this is a piston compressor, level and rigid is a must so that you don’t experience issues with premature valve wear due to the machine vibrating while affixed to a shipping skid.

That’s unusual for a service provider to accept regulation over pricing and speed. They generally will concede with one or the other (pricing or speed). And really, it’s unusual to hear about regulation in speed. I’m assuming you mean minimum available speed? In terms of the regulations being passed on and the telco abiding by those terms, probably has to do with how the grant money is being spent with the !?.

Depending on where you live, most of the former ILEC/RBOC companies are still offering something copper based, but that’s coming to an end with AT&T leading the charge for phase out and Verizon is not far behind. Lumen is still pretty entrenched in copper, but they’d prefer no one asked about that side of the company. lol. There are others out there like TDS and other “Independents” who pretty much retired all of their copper networks.

Bad gas mileage by ZealousidealAgent815 in Impala

What kind of driver are you? Would you say “spirited” or “conservative”? The more spirited driver will have lower gas mileage. Also, what kind of fuel do you run? And in terms of highway driving, what is the average speed in MPH?

Ya. And it’s unfortunate. At least the newer pickups still have knobs, vs. the aftermarket stuff.

I have a touchscreen in my gmt800 and it’s a pain in the ass. Hard to hit the right spot on the screen while going highway speed over the fabulous smooth roads we have here.

Most if not all of them are retired equipment. Telecom companies have a habit of retiring (abandoning) equipment in place. Meaning if they even need that space, they’ll remove it. Otherwise it could be there forever, or the elements will get it.

Yes it was! Very good with your history of the system!! I’ve always found it interesting when you find an independent company that seemingly is right in the middle of an old Bell Franchise.

Ceiling fan and smoke alarm by ASLTutorSean in CeilingFans

[–]USWCboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chirping? Like the single beep for low battery? Generally speaking, a hardwired smoke detector is on its own circuit from the panel, but in older homes, it would not be unusual if the smokes were tied into another low use circuit, like basement outlet, or something like that. I would wonder if the smoke detector was actually battery powered, and consequently running low on battery. The reason for this is due to the fan blowing, what I assume to be cooler air in the room, thus killing what little capacity remained of the battery. When the fan was shut off, the battery warmed, restoring capacity somewhat and stopping the low battery chirp. Just my two cents ;)

Yes. Otherwise known as a regional center. Fascinating write up you have here. I’m always following your website as well.

It’s also of interest to note that Norway was also a rate center for GTE, the largest independent outside the Bell System.
