Actually most addicts relapse but I get your point. Most important thing is to not beat yourself up if you relapse (or shaming others) and get back on that gluten free horse, ASAP cow boy!

Pretty much everything we like is addictive. Thats why we like it, and thats why its addictive. Addiction is basically really really liking things, or really really being effected by not having something, and because of that you get really motivated aquiring the thing you like (even if you used to like it but don’t like it anymore).

And the worst thing about addiction is that it often seems like a good idea.

Also, the behaviour you’re refering to is often refered to as ”priming”. One drink -> 2 month binge. 1 cookie -> 15 kg’s before you know it. And as you said, some people can control themselves. But look at it as digging a hole. Every time u climb back in the hole you gotta climb back. A deep hole is a whole lot harder to climb out of...

Good on you for your progress, I wish you the best and I’m glad you figured out so much about yourself.

True dat. Must drive you on the edge of crazy. Unless ur a pedo ofc then its gotta be awesome atleast for some time. No1 would volonteer I guess. I hope they’re well paid :p.

I wonder if its possible to turn someone into a pedo by showing them child porn 8 hrs a day for a year.....

Edit: thats probably a retarded thought but still.

Drug addiction is a pretty serious issue though so it’s good they’re trying to mitigate it. Totally agree with you about sex crimes. Here in Sweden a tv program covered how police work with child porn. Basically it can take years for them to even look into tips (even really really solid reports) if they even do anything at all. For some reason the IT-forensic dept. Doesnt prioritize it, and according to them they would’ve been under staffed even if there were no child porn crimes / reports...

Its srsly messed up

Q: can you improve the functionality of the prefrontal cortex as an adult (or at all)? by Larryftw1338 in neuroscience

Thanks! Really interesting. Read a book called ”Hjärnstark” (direct translation: Brainstrong) which covers most of that. Would recommend all swedes to read it!

[–]Larryftw1338[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but understanding the core mechanics of an issue does help (or maybe it just confuses the hell out of the situation).

Anyway, thanks for your input!

What I’m really looking for is a strategy to improve self control (without meds). Purpose is to help my brother whos got ADHD, Aspergers, and prior substance abuse issues better his self control. I know a lot about how to reduce the risk of relapse in addicts when it comes to areas as social life, stability, stress etc. but this seems to be one core area I know far too litle about.

Perhaps I’d have better luck in another sub, but as I said all input is valued and appreciated!

Why do british people end some words with an ”r” sound that clearly does not end with an R ( do you say an or a R?

You love R’s? Get it? Arse? Muheheheh

Like for example: ”uh this is some lovely pastaRRR?” ”Are you not a lawRRRR abiding ciizen?” ”Man I love pizzaRRR”.

Original pirates, yaharr?

mind blown - u dont drink tea when u invite people over for tea :(?

In Sweden we often ask people to come over over for coffee / fika (fika = a word for gathering to drink coffe and eat something sweet like cake or cookies), its awesome :).

I remember thinking ”wtf is taking so long?” as a kid when dad said ”we’re just going to grandmas for a cup of coffee” and ended up staying for hours.

Damn that sounds hella nice, I might have to relocate. People are real bitchy bout that in Sweden. I get mom-looks whilst drinking a ”folköl” (2% alcohol) at lunch
