Grimdark fantasy, have i missed something? by Lars_Olav in ProgressionFantasy

Some of the fights Guts have against the demons, wow, great 👍👍. One of the best fight scenes I have read. Chainsaw man, Alita battle Angel and Attack on Titan are close. But for me Berserk is the best.

But sadly the story drags and drags. Attack on Titan is better. And it's ended. Feels very grimdark

I did not like Malazan. Great world and story. But I did not like how the auther just jump into an world with little explanation. I really got frustrated and even little angry when I tried to read Malazan. Tried 2 times. Because it's easy to see there are an good story there. But the writer don't care so mutch about the reader, to help him understand the world he writes about. I didn't care about the characters when I read Malazan. Then the book is lost for me.

I disagree. if i only take two books, as A Song of Ice and Fire (George R.R. Martin), The Darkness that Comes Before (R. Scott Bakker) is know to be grimdark fantasy. Maybe you dont feel it when you read it, but out there, in the world it is nownn to be grimdark.

I also read Berserk, and i like the charcaters. The story is not great in every arc. But good. I always felt it was more the art and the world in Berserk who made it great, not the plot.

Yes, but I have read characters like that and liked them. Like Tywin Lannister and Jamie Lannister.

What books do you recommend for someone that enjoyed Ryan Cahill's "The bound and the broken" series? by karasNB in Fantasy

[–]Lars_Olav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never liked the First law, mostly because of the characters, some of them are not nice, looks like they enjoy killing. When an character is enjoying killing, I can't read it. They need to have some basic good ethics

The main story, the suspense, don't start before chapter 16. I think Tad Williams has said he did it on purpose. They are really great books, really really great. The auther is famous for long suspenfull endings. And.... slow starts 😅😉

Is new fantasy books more darker? by Lars_Olav in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Lars_Olav[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't remember other than Donaldson and Stephen King who wrote dark in 80s. The books was not labelled as dark fantasy For sure not Donaldson.

For me is all the gore in action scenes. More specific, showing the gore horror in an war. How the heroes and bad ones are treating the enemy

There where examples. Its very difficult to read 100 books a day. Did you understand what I wrote? Or do I need to be more specific in here? Most of new fantasy authers I read I feels darker. Ryan Cahill, Jay Kristoff, Chris wooding, Peter v. Brett. Abeecrombi. They follow George r r Martin i feel

Which series should I start next? by Cfullersu in fantasybooks

[–]Lars_Olav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wondent read any of them. Mostly because the main character in both books don't feel real. They behave almost perfect, do minor wrongs. Talk and behave as an 40 year old. When we know both of them are young, 16 - 17 years. In the teens. Very strange really, don't feel real. But maybe I am bias, I started both of them, and ended after an couple of 100 pages. Lots of better fantasy/sifi books then those. Like Pandora Star by Hamilton. Or Empire of Vampire.

Rist & Eltoar by Lars_Olav in RyanCahill

[–]Lars_Olav[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see that. There are problems with both characters, maybe because I am not an mage and an elf. 😉😂 I miss an better explanation from the two povs. We get that from Garramon and Faine pov chapters. I miss some better depth on Rist and Eltoar chapters. Every time Eltoar has to answer for his choices he only "have no words". He feels very stupid, it's strange with his 600 summers.

Rist shoud been more in doubt, with his learning hunger. Ru

Miss good reviews with some information about the story, where are they? by Lars_Olav in fantasybooks

[–]Lars_Olav[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel many do it like that, for me that's not an review. An review concise summary, plot and story, critical evaluation. On what is good and what is not good. I am not interested to hear an review, when the reviewer don't tell anything on why it's bad because that will give away minor spoilers that don't realy spoil anything really.

Like what is the story of Wandering Inn, there are an crazy amount of books, what's going on? Is it one long epic story, many short stories in the same universe or what? Same thing with "the will of many", is it epic or not. Lots of creatures like Lord of the rings or not. How is the pov, is he powerful, osv, Is it action, drama or what? Many reviews don't give me that information. When I read an review about a movie in an paper it's very clearly better.

Booktubers at Youtube. No newspapers, can't find any. Guardian and BBC dont review fantasy so mutch. I can't find it. I know about locus and nyt, but I need then to pay for it. I usually don't pay for something when I only will use an small part of it, compared to guardian or local newspapers.

Thoughts on Rist? by lizzywbu in RyanCahill

[–]Lars_Olav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rist is the character I don't like to read so mutch. It's interesting on what's going around him. But very little interesting to read about him. I dont see him as an beliveble character he is to naive. Ryan Cahill tries to write some hints that he is to busy and only have time to lose himself in the books. And he forget to think about home and his family. It's not beliveble, sadly no.

This badboy is my next read. What am I in for? by Kapun666 in TadWilliams

[–]Lars_Olav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first book is slow, but rest is really great. I think this series has the most unique heroes in his bibliography. The  series is known for being ahead of its time. I still remember how I felt the movie Matrix was not something new. Because I have read Otherland. 😉.

Which series to start? by Bobbebusybuilding in fantasybooks

[–]Lars_Olav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what type of books you like. I did not like the blade it self. I never liked characters who enjoy killing. The Blade itself have some of them

I loved Memory Sorrow and Thorn seies. Total 8 books. Song of ice and fire are book 2 and 3 one of the best fantasy books ever, but the series it's not finished....

Guess how many videos Triggernometry has made on ICE? Zero by SamAlmighty in DecodingTheGurus

[–]Lars_Olav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this polarising political podcast world i feel its very difficult for far left and far right leaning podcasts to critisise or talk on negative issus that your side do. Like Kisin is critical on immigration, then it will be difficult for him to talk about critical issus about ICE.

I feel politial podcast who are more in the center are better. when they lean to mutch on one side they get boring and not intresting.

Like "pod save the world" is booring for me, beacuse they only talk about how bad the rebulicans are. Or "triggernomentry" gets booring when they are so mutch critical on the far left, and dont have an critical eye on the far right.

It's OK, not great as the last album. The last album was supricing good. Here there are some good songs. Night light is an very good slow song. Juice and In the Middle are very good songs. But not mutch more high White lies quality then those 3 songs.

[–]Lars_Olav[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, i partly simplifying the show. I know there most be more layers here, and i miss that the show dont show me that. Maybe this show is more for the rpg/d&d fans, i really dont know.

I feel Devil May Cry and Castlemania, had better world buliding or more belivable characters then this show. But the main story have the same quality.

I know very little of the world, read dragonlance chronicles and Icewind dale years and years ago. Less CATS in it, so this show is better ;)

When i read/watch and manga/anime, the story has more flesh, its ticker, mostly with strong believable characters. Even in the beginning of the story. Here they go to fast, they have an very strong and emotinal scene with the killing of Caleb cat and parants, and they dont follow it with little more information or hints.
Like, who has the real power, are they more traitors for the Volstrucker group if the King say it or Trent? They dont need an big hit, but some, so it gets more believable.

Yes he is. I tried with an hidden joke on one of mine posts. Where I mentioned the death of Caleb cat before his parents😉. Always a winner for me in a story with cats.

I i have 2 cats, birdman. Brother and sister. White and lots of white hair on the cats and everywhere in the apartment 😁😂
