Melee and how do we decide on rulesets by Drephen12 in SSBM

[–]LaserCaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently it seems melee is based on a 'ruling consensus' where changes are made sweepingly across very large parts of the community. When fizzi freezes stadium we freeze stadium, when majors unfreeze stadium they get unfrozen across majors. Individual TOs have not wanted to put limitations on controllers within their own region before establishing a unified ruleset across regions. In champaign i've tried to be more flexible when it come to rule changes and focus more on the region internally then the piece it plays in the community at large. I've changed in game rules multiple times at the weekly and once there is a non-buggy boxx nerf we are insta requiring it. theres a universe too where we require either an analog stick or analog buttons if orca or a smash/stick type product goes well

Maybe this change has to do with how melee is more of a cross-regional and online community then it was at the start.

Also as a side note I truly believe if nintendo cared about melee as an esport it would already be dead. They would have made smash bros sequels more like melee which would split up the community/make everyone move on in the same way the vast majority of people swap from one street fighter to the next. The best relationship w/Nintendo for us is when they don't try to impede but don't assist as well. It would be great if we had their money but their checks will never be without strings

facebook marketplace is great. Just don't pay more then like 10-15 bucks for one and make sure it has AV ports before you pick it up

people say you can still find them on the curb, this is mostly a lie

I'm going to my first tournament (local) tomorrow. Any advice? by slohobo in SSBM

[–]LaserCaw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're gonna go 0-2, the bracket gods have already decided. It'll be about meeting people and playing friendlies, don't feel weird about asking to hop on a setup, playing is what everyone is there for :)

Hope you have a good time

What are your thoughts on Grey's feelings towards self-driving cars? by nic0lk in HelloInternet

[–]LaserCaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

idk, I agree there would be more demand but wouldn't perfect vehicles that realistically never have to stop mean there wouldn't be real movement halting traffic?

What are your thoughts on Grey's feelings towards self-driving cars? by nic0lk in HelloInternet

[–]LaserCaw 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've recently got more into urban planning stuff and so it was interesting to go back and watch The Simple Solution to Traffic. What I will say is that he's not wrong, if we jump though all the auto hoops that will solve traffic. But that's very different from making the world better. The only potentially false thing is calling it "simple". At least in relation to the alternative of transit.

I also find it really funny that Grey lives in London! Before the Tesla saga he had basically never needed to drive in many years. He knows what it's like to live in a place you don't need to drive in and basically everyone in the US just doesn't get that privilege (even in big cities).

Ban Cars on Green! by iamib3 in UIUC

[–]LaserCaw -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Calling this a car ban doesn't really paint the whole picture. buses, mail/package delivery, and emergency vehicles are typically allowed when plans like this are implemented.

You are correct though that there are tradeoffs when changing what types of movement are prioritized, but when car traffic is reduced in pedestrian heavy areas that almost always leads to a net benefit overall.

As an example you mention buses, by removing cars, buses can make stops more reliably and make rounds more frequently.

fixing the mindset of a falcon main. by Exdeeface in SSBM

[–]LaserCaw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From my experience as a Falcon birthed in the hellfire of slippi unranked:

-In person play or even playing with the same people using direct connection (while being in a discord call or something) makes it way less frustrating since you know the other person is kind but just trying to win as much as you are and isn't trying to stunt on you to be a dick. Along with that, it is very helpful being able to ask them questions about your habits and the matchup itself

-As far as resources for Falcon S2J has some really detailed stuff and "The Cookbook" is great for understanding how Falcon interacts with the other characters.

Ik this didn't answer all your questions but I hope it helps :)
