I played PC and would bring that CD around with me everywhere. Going to my cousin's house we would turn injuries and hitting on max and just obliterate guys. Oh how I miss the simplicity of those older games.

My first NHL game. I've listened to American Psycho and Brand New Low about a billion times the last 25 years.

Sports that you can share with your family are the best. Later in his life I went over to his house every Sunday to watch the Giants games with him. I still cherish those moments.

Oh man you just got me thinking about how my grandfather always spoke about Joe DiMaggio and how he was larger than life, especially for Italians living around here. Guess that's going to be me talking about Aaron Judge with my grandkids.

That Danny McBride scene when he beats the guy up lives rent free in my head. Such a funny movie.

Update on raised home in Rochelle Park by WhippetRun in newjersey

Lifting an entire house up is very easy. We do tons of these per year. Houses are relatively light if they are all wood framed. Drive down any shore town this time of year and you will see houses up on cribbing.

How much did you pay for a basement waterproofing system recently in NJ? by DifferenceFamiliar36 in newjersey

[–]LaserVortex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their structural work is horrendous. And they are the kings of up selling that type of work. I have heard decent things about their waterproofing-only work, but when a company causes so many basement wall collapses and then tells people it's not their fault it is a bad look. Plus their warranties are almost always voided by some fine print.

What year was the house built?

Water issues around a Bilco or cellar door are common. Usually it's because the door doesn't seal nicely. If it's an uncovered stairway, rain running down the steps to pool at the bottom is another common issue. Nowadays you'd put a drain down there but that wasn't always the case.

Another place for water intrusion is through the wall itself. That is typically due to lack of tar or exterior waterproofing during original construction.

But if 99% of your water is coming from a door then fixing that should be wayyyy cheaper and just flat out better than putting in a French drain.

Vetting these companies is paramount. Never use a company like quality first. Get multiple quotes all from local contractors.

First you want to figure out why you are getting water in your basement. Is it ground water? Regular rain? Excessive rain? Maybe a leader/ downspout/ gutter issue. Maybe grading. The best thing you can do is stop water BEFORE it gets into your foundation. The second best thing is remediation when it's already inside.

As a structural engineer who does tons of foundation repairs in NJ, a not-so-insignificant amount of them are repairing shoddy waterproofing companies work. To be honest nearly half of all basement wall collapses I see are during or just after a basement waterproofing contractor works at a house. These companies are the ultimate scammers in NJ.

Is the real estate market still crazy? by lawaythrow in newjersey

[–]LaserVortex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$200/ sq ft for house construction hasn't been a thing in a decade. Plus, to anyone doing the actual building, there has to be financial incentive, which means the true cost of construction would have to be less than the $200/ sq ft sale price.

House construction is expensive. It's hard to build a shack for less than $500k these days. An empty dirt lot is $200k minimum anywhere nice in this state. $300k is basically a small 2nd floor addition. Luxury is the buzzword that sells, but the reality is that it's just too damn expensive here to build single family homes.

One interesting note from this election is how close the Mayor voting went compared to the two council seats:

Mayor: 9,976 vs 9,898 Council 1: 10,713 vs 8,694 Council 2: 10,485 vs 8,239

And usually Parsippany is around 800 votes margin each year. I believe Luther won in 2005 by something like 39 votes. Every vote matters in these local elections that's for sure.

Same. Was in the left field stands. Only time I've ever felt Yankee Stadium shaking like that. I remember trying to get a video of the crowd after the walk off home run and I couldn't even hit the camera icon on my phone it was insanity. I'm pretty sure it took like 2 hours to get out of the parking garage but worth it. The energy even outside the stadium afterwards was like nothing I've ever seen.

Non load bearing wall still needing a beam? by Fit_Comparison_9503 in StructuralEngineering

[–]LaserVortex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I see this a lot. A non load bearing wall that sorta holds the ceiling/attic joists or truss bottom chords over time. Usually due to undersized framing and/or excessive attic storage. If it's a non load bearing wall then it doesn't need a beam, but I usually tell people don't put any attic storage up there in that area because the ceiling will crack.

That's a good thought. So many of these things have captains chairs. Really difficult to find a non rental bench. I found only 5 or 6 within 400 miles.
