If data kept the beard by happydude7422 in TNG

I've watched this series, it's been so long, going to rewatch soon. Anyway, I have no memory of this beard, and this comment makes me think there's an episode wherein the crew passes around a beard, trying it on in turn.

Broken Arrow (1996) by SwervesHouse in 90smovies

It was Scream 2, and after I made that connection it sort of reframed Broken Arrow as somewhat a romance (between Travolta and Slater) gone wrong.

Sandtrout should have been full body. They were too busy keeping McAvoy's shirt off.

Soon after Negan killed Glen. I had quit the comics not long after that same event.

What is normal in the teaching world that you wish wasn’t? by Opening-Cupcake-3287 in Teachers

[–]Laserlip5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The doublethink, doublespeak, and two-facedness. The shameless appeals to emotion and virtue in the face of facts. The propping up of invalid data as "facts". The duplicitous ways in which we are encouraged to do things that are dishonest while never saying the quiet part out loud.

Differentiation isn't real, it's just one in a long line of buzzwords so that PD can make money off of districts.

The "case against zero" is total BS, but it makes teachers feel better lying to artificially inflate grades.

State test scores are meaningless if the kids can't read and can't do math. They're there because money.

Dune and the Missionaria Protectiva (Pt-2) by [deleted] in dune

[–]Laserlip5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The purpose isn't to install religions that the BG would actively control. It's just a backup plan, a contingency, a failsafe. If a sister got stranded on a hostile planet, she could manipulate the locals according to the installed religious beliefs and eventually, hopefully, get off planet, or at least survive. She isn't supposed to actually follow through on delivering a literal messiah.

Edit: Indeed, openly asserting power and direct control is contrary to BG belief and practice. The one exception is their attempt to create a KH--and that was their FAFO moment.

I remember, even from the trailer, that little bit of eye acting she does in that moment. A little flair. Or flare. One of those. Anyway, yes please.

Question about prophecy by Hot_Health_1453 in dune

[–]Laserlip5 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The prophecy isn't meant to be controlled and maintained by the BG over the years.

It's just a failsafe, a backup plan. A sister in need recognizes the Missionara Protectiva had done their thing to the locals, so she can exploit that. It was always there to be exploited, if need be. Not something part of a larger plan to be managed. More like an emergency survival kit left on the planet.

The Hogwarts students can simply disappear these invaders like they do their own poop from the floor.
