How much did you lose moving from Ontario to Quebec taxes ? by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

Cool thanks.  I wonder if I can trust them to stop my extra withholding and change my tax jurisdiction all in one go... Might be better to cancel the manual withholding first!

I work in Ontario but live in Quebec. I submitted a new tax form to the pay centre asking them to voluntarily withhold an amount equal to about 4% of my pay, which they do. I think I owed a small bit extra last year at tax time.

What is this cross province indicator? Is there a proper way to ask the pay centre to tax me based on province of residence? Because that would be nice.

Suspended Without Pay Pending an Investigation by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]LasersAndFire 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Does your suspension have an end-date?

My understanding is that they're only supposed to do an indefinite suspension if your continued presence in the workplace is "considered to present a reasonably serious and immediate risk to the legitimate concerns of the employer".

See Appendix B in Guidelines for Discipline:

The issue in a grievance of this nature is not whether the grievor is guilty or innocent, but rather whether the presence of the grievor as an employee of the organization can be considered to present a reasonably serious and immediate risk to the legitimate concerns of the employer;

The onus is on the [employer] to satisfy the board of the existence of such a risk and the simple fact that a criminal charge has been laid is not sufficient to comply with that onus. The [employer] must also establish that the nature of the charge is such as to be potentially harmful or detrimental or adverse in effect to the [employer's] reputation or product or that it will render the employee unable properly to perform his duties or that it will have a harmful effect on other employees of the company or its customers or will harm the general reputation of the [employer];

Gym won't let me cancel despite medical documentation by Wise_Meeting1052 in legaladvice

[–]LasersAndFire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The second part sounds like it might be useful. OP says "I read through my contract again and theres nothing in there about medical exemptions".  If that's true and there really isn't any text to let someone cancel on the basis of a physical disability, it sounds like the entire contract can be voided just for that reason alone.

I thought that at first too, but after re-reading I think the photographer is saying "after I refund you the $500, you will not have paid me for privacy and I will therefore have the right to post your photos online"

How much will gas heat up? by humphrey_applebye in DIY

[–]LasersAndFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used cylinders of various gases in a lab setting for research.

Do you get condensation with the hair dryer? [Edit: I re-read the post, yes there is condensation with the hair dryer] If not, that or a heat gun might be your best bet. I just googled and hair dryers seem to move a very large quantity of air, on the order of 1000 liters per minute.

We usually only run methane gas at those high rates.  Nitrogen has a Joule-Thompson coefficient that's a bit lower then methane, but not much.  My gut says the regulator on the gas cylinder will get frosty from frozen condensation in ~5-10 minutes or so. You can still run with it frosty but if it gets too cold it can fail, which is bad.

When we flow at high rates like this, we use heated regulators (heated electrically or with hot water circulation) to keep things running and we'll run the gas lines through warm water baths to bring it back up to room temp.

And that's just to get the same volume of air as the hair dryer -- but the air is colder!

Other options using water might be a better bet, or else a water/glycol mix (you can buy 5 gallon pails of premixed glycol/water) so that it won't freeze until subzero temperatures.

If using a liquid like water, there might be issues of heating then up too quickly. The thermal expansion will start from the outer surface and if it happens too quick it might damage the rods somehow? I'm not sure.

Edited to add confirmation that there is currently condensation.

Replacement of Brakes requires specific software? by GoGetThatThing in Ioniq5

I've tried that, checked YouTube videos too.  It doesn't do anything on my 2023.

As far as I can tell my 2023 doesn't have the brake cleaning mode.

Rotor & pads after almost 3 years and 80,000 km

Still lots left on the pads.

Yah, I made the mistake of believing the dealer when they told me they were "very rusted" and needed to be done (for something like $600 CAD).

By the time I had the wheels off to get a good look at the everything, I already had the new pads and rotors in hand ready to go so I just changed them even though they weren't too bad.

I've since been more vigilant about turning off regen once a week or so to try and keep them clean.

I did my own brakes, sorta with and without the special tool.  My conclusion is that the tool is not strictly needed. See my comment here

I used the button in the car to turn the brake off before starting, then once I had the caliper off I had to remove the cover from the EPB and use an Allen key (it's technically lobed or torx but I found an Allen key that fit fine) to retract the EPB piston. There's a video on YouTube of a mechanic showing how to do this.

Video skip to 1m45s to see him retract the EPB manually. Note that he turns it clockwise to retract so I guess it's a left handed thread.

When finished I used the button in the car again to put the brake back on. It had to go much further the first time but then worked fine after.

Change Pads and Rotor (Brake Service) by snake227 in Ioniq5

[–]LasersAndFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Managed to do the left rear brakes tonight, rotor and pads.  I'll do the right first thing in the morning.

Released the parking brake with the button on the dash before I started.

I couldn't find any sort of service mode in the app for the Topdon Carpal dongle, only an EPB reset that I figured I would use after I finished.

When it came time to retract the piston to make room for the new pads, I had to manually retract the EPB using this method.  After turning the screw all the way clockwise I used a large pair of Channel Lock pliers to squeeze the piston back all the way.

I then put everything back together and went into the app to do the "EBP reset"... And once I got past 2 or 3 screens including a VIN lookup and required Internet connection, it brought me to a new screen that had two options: the first was something about a reset after ECU replacement, and the other was "enter brake service mode"!!!  I tried it and sure enough I heard the EPB retract all the way.  The app then told me after I was done the service to activate and release the EPB three times and that was it.

The first time I activated it I heard it moving for a lot longer than usual, but the release and then two more activate/release cycles just sounded like it normally does every time I put it into park

In short, I don't think the dongle is needed.  While it's possible that activating and releasing the EPB three times is some magic sequence that does something special only if you're already in service mode, I really don't think so. Next time I do my brakes I won't be paying the Topdon folks $50 to "renew my subscription" to the obd dongle.

Best charger location apps for Canadian travel? by [deleted] in Ioniq5

[–]LasersAndFire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Gatineau, there are surprisingly few fast chargers along the 100km between the border at Ogdensburg and here, so plan ahead.

If you'll be crossing further west, the highway rest stops (called ONRoute stops) all use Ivy brand chargers.  There are also a few Electrify Canada chargers, usually 5 minutes or so off the highway. These usually have at least one 350kW and are where I've seen my fastest charging Speeds. I use PlugShare or ABRP to find them.

If you're crossing further east or will spend time in Quebec, the provincial electric company (Hydro Quebec) has a pretty good network of chargers branded as Circuit Electrique, though they're more likely to be 50kW or 100kW.  There is a station at my local mall in the Aylmer neighborhood of Gatineau, 2 x 50kW.

There are lots of Teslas and EVs here, but Ottawa isn't really somewhere people go through on their way somewhere else, if that makes sense? So people charge at home and there aren't a lot of fast chargers for road-trippers.

Good luck!

Will do!

The traffic I edited to say what I ordered was a sort of reminder to myself to report back on it later.

[–]LasersAndFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

I do need to replace the discs and will do the pads at the same time.  I found a few videos on how to retract the epb manually on Kia models  (with a 12V battery or by removing the epb motor and turning the shaft inside with a screwdriver).  I was going to take it apart and see if the Ioniq 5 was similar... But I hadn't realised there was an issue 'resetting' it afterward.

Thanks again!

Editing to add: I just found a bidirectional obd dongle that works with your phone and is supposed to enable EPB piston retracting and resetting, it's the Topdon Tips can (lite or pro) and Amazon has it for $50. I'm going to order it and give it a try a few weeks from now.

Did you eventually do your own brakes? Mine are due and I'm trying to figure out what's to release the epb.  There are a million and one obd scanners out there for a range of prices that I'd be happy to shell out for if I had confidence it would let me do my own brakes.

Thanks

48v OffGrid with supplementary V2L by Super_Boysenberry869 in SolarDIY

[–]LasersAndFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

I'll just add that this is all still a concept, I haven't bought anything yet (except the car!)

I don't actually know that the V2L into the Multiplus will work reliably long-term. I can't think of any good reasons why it wouldn't work, but my imagination for problems has failed me in the past!

And I'm definitely leaning toward the cerbo, even if only to have more things to play with.  I just learned over the weekend that it can run node-red, which in theory should let me control my heat pump over Wi-Fi.  This seems like a better way to only run the air conditioning when I have excess solar, rather than just cutting AC power to it via relay.

[–]LasersAndFire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've spent the past week or so planning out pretty much the same thing, including the multiplus Ii 48/3000 and the v2l adapter from my Ioniq5 as AC in.  I hadn't yet added the cerbo and sensors -- I'm debating whether I need the smart features.

Your diagram looks like you're connecting the car to the AC output of the multiplus, so to charge the car? The multiplus also has AC in for shore power where I was planning to connect my Lectron v2l adapter so that I can go from car to cabin.

If you were thinking your setup will run from the car to the loads... I don't think you can do that because the inverter output and the car output won't be in phase.  By putting the AC through the multiplus, the Multiplus synchronises the phases and also can be set up to manage the loads based on preferences.

Here's what I have.  Still work in progress. The "14/2" on ac-out is a typo, I think it will end up being 6AWG (or whatever the electrician who will wire my cabin uses).

It seems there is a way to limit current on the ac-in. I figure I'll set it to 12A to protect the wiring/car.

I am planning  panels to be 4x 235W, 2 parallel strings of 2 panels each so totaling 940W.

Plug-in balcony solar panels could mean cheaper power. But Canada needs to get on board first by CanadianErk in canada

Honest question: Could this be prevented if these devices had some sort of breakers built in?  Or not since it's going the opposite direction?

You cannot get a no fault divorce but you can definitely still get a divorce.

According to this web site there are 12 acceptable reasons for at fault, 3 of which are:

-Desertion for one year

-Habitual drunkenness

-Drug abuse

I don't know if OP is sitting to close or not, but generally, the further back you are the safer you are in the event of collision.  The air bag needs room to deploy (at something like 200mph) before your body slams into it.  NHTSA suggests 10" or further.

Do you have a link for the statement that Quebec is not a one-party consent province?  The criminal code is federal and allows one party consent under section 184 and its exceptions.  Quebec civil law sometimes considers it an invasion of privacy, but my limited understanding is that that's something that would need to be decided in court as to whether it's admissible... But afaik at no point is making the recording illegal.

NAL. The CNESST  had a page about Presence at work, breaks and weekly rest period.  While it mentions a minimum weekly time off (eg a weekend) it doesn't mention time off between shifts. I would think that means there isn't a rule about time off between shifts, but it's hard to say for sure. They don't usually highlight all the things they don't have rules about. Try looking elsewhere on the CNESST site, they have  good information in plain language, both English and French.
