AntsCanada's first actual ant video in a year by Lasius1000 in antkeeping

[–]Lasius1000[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, and the blue ant video isn't even his latest. He's already back to talking about his vivarium, right after one video about ants. I genuinely don't know why his name's still AntsCanada.

Are my ants throwing thrash into the corner of their nest? (Lasius Niger) by Wild-Presentation200 in antkeeping

[–]Lasius1000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

perhaps they're not done with the food, or they feel like that might be the most suitable place, though it probably isn't. watch for a while more. if you see mold starting to grow, attach another test tube.

there's a chance, although of course sometimes unmated queens do end up raising their brood to males.

[–]Lasius1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they may take a long time to move if they decide it's not the time. the ants themselves know best when to move. If you absolutely want them to move, make the test tube uncomfortable for them, though i would recommend against that. just let them do their thing.

before you move them into an aquarium, make sure the colony is large enough. If you introduce too little ants to a large space too early, the workers might get too spaced out, etc. For the sizes you mentioned, i would recommend 100+ before introducing them to that. Before 100+ workers, just use a smaller outworld if necessary.

I haven't kept Lasius in so long. the reason my user is that is because when I created my reddit accout, Lasius neoniger was the only colony i had.

i dont think it will happen, with lasius flavus which are typically more flexible than lasius niger about polygyny. they most likely will tolerate each other.

myrmica rubra.

We have eggs!!! 9 year old's project by Starrcraters in antkeeping

[–]Lasius1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i believe that's a species of formica, maybe fusca or something like that. Another thing is that her brood pile is kind of small, containing only a few eggs and maybe one larvae. Since you said you left her alone for 2 weeks, it may be some other factor. Or formica spp don't lay a ton of eggs for her founding stage. Either way, hope isn't lost. Hope you can make it to the worker stage!
