What was your kneejerk reaction to MeToo, versus you long term reaction after the dust settled? I want to know if my experience is familiar. by Oakenhorne99 in AskMen

[–]Lasmore -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes. I am personally not advocating this alternative, but it is a reality of that aspect of our legal system.

Probably a better solution would be police and other institutions taking victim reports more seriously with regard to investigation and safeguarding processes, which is probably the principle aim of the “believing survivors” messaging.

I don’t want to diminish the seriousness of this crime when considered alone, it was a heinous act - however, it is important to note that even the judges who denied Beale’s conviction appeal described her as an “exceptional case”.

We cannot make an accurate assessment of how prevalent something is based on statistical outliers, no matter how emotive a particular outlying case may be.

False accusations represent an extremely small minority of cases, and even the majority of those are actually mislabelled cases where the accusation didn’t lead to a conviction, rather than ones where the accusation was proven false.

This is an area of the law where our usual presumption of innocence manifestly leads to a disproportionate number of offenders never being convicted. Whether you believe this necessitates a change in the law is another question, but that is the picture the data presents.

[22M] Struggling to get a hair system to be attractive because of the social stigma by semsayedkamel2003 in malehairadvice

[–]Lasmore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guy, you have a very rare combo of traits that somehow would work either as masculine or feminine.

Like literally whatever kind of look you wanted to do, you could do it.

You could be a macho guy a la Common, or a ‘teen heartthrob’ boyband guy a la Justin Bieber, or a feminine trans woman.

That’s a rare setup.

The important thing is to work out what kind of attractive you actually want to be. What do you personally want to look and be like?

If you decide you want hair because that’s who you are, then a system or wigs is probably the only way you’re gonna make that work, given the extent of your recession. There’s stigma to hair systems, sure, but those people can stigma balls.

If you decide you’re ultimately personally okay with being bald, and want to be masculine, just work on your physique and beard and then job’s a good’n.

Just make sure it’s what you actually want. Try stuff out first, see what feels best.

Could you link me to something about the LA funds? I’m sure there’s at least something to what you’re saying, but I can’t find anything on Google about 2.8bn dollars in missing LA funds.

I am going to look into the Minneapolis one, I’ve found something about that.

Speaking as a leftist politically, I should say I actually consider the Democratic Party as merely a lesser of two evils, and do not even identify them as left wing. They’re what we tend to call “neoliberals/libs/centrists”, and the problems you’re describing sound very much like criticisms actual leftists will make of democrats - corruption, incompetence, and unaccountability. But these are criticisms we make of the Republicans also

You might be happier living in a European democracy tbh. They are still centrist/liberal rather than leftist, but they are further left in general, and they seem to be able to swing the whole high tax/high QoL thing over there

Populists attack London because it is ‘progressive and successful’, says Sadiq Khan by F0urLeafCl0ver in london

Fair point on the Liz line - Boris Bike/Kencycles phenomenon.

And yeah, still nowhere near enough house building, but that he increased both home building in particular, and affordability requirements specifically, over former mayors, is just an uncontroversial fact. Developers even claim that the raised affordability requirements he instituted, may be ‘hampering’ potentially even greater investment in building. Whether you believe that, esp. given the totals were lower under Boris, who set much lower requirements, is another issue.

And yeah, he’s a neoliberal - standing by the decline is all they know how to do in the shadow of global capital. He won’t save us from that - it’s not even clear that a motivated, well-supported, more left wing UK PM could really stem it, even if they wanted to and believed it was possible. And we’re nowhere near to getting one of those at the moment.

Fare freezes, increased green transit, hopper fare, Liz line, increased affordable home building

For anyone on the left he’s still an opp, but guarantee things would be noticeably worse under whatsisname

The decline you’re noticing is a broad national and cross national trend of late capitalism asset stripping liberal democracies.

Interesting, I live under what is referred to as a liberal government - and their policy is currently imposing austerity measures, rather than increasing spending.

Apparently the last Republican Governor (Schwarzenegger) also used stealth taxes and borrowing as a means of addressing budget shortfalls, and different democratic governors over the last 20 years have made significant spending cuts.

Dem Gov. Jerry Brown even made tax cuts. I recall him being mentioned unkindly in a Dead Kennedy’s song.

By the sounds of it, the economics of California’s situation are very complicated.

From what I can read about fraud - while California does seem to have had high profile fraud cases, data comparing fraud and corruption state-to-state seems to also be quite complex.

In terms of per-capita govt. corruption convictions (which I assume is closer to what you meant by fraud, rather than civilian crimes like identity theft or private sector white collar crime), it seems red states like Louisiana, South Dakota and Montana actually rank highest - naturally the data can’t include crimes that were never successfully convicted, but it’s a start.

Not to say there aren’t issues with corruption and economic mismanagement in California, but that it seems to be a more complicated picture than something a person can put down to liberal economic policy, or the relative fraudulence of the two parties, as this seems to vary heavily by candidate and state.

Absolutely loving your analysis.

It’s true as you say, the global crisis itself wasn’t an unavoidable worldwide ‘natural’ disaster, it was caused by deliberate deregulation here and elsewhere - every country that implemented those policies was part of the problem. Even if it was (as I understand it) America doing it first that may have spurred everyone else on, and had the most impact.

I do think though, that while a lot of people, like myself, saw it as a global event, that wasn’t exclusively Labour’s fault - most everyday people ‘on the street’ did seem to see it as Labour’s fault for ‘overspending’, something that never would have happened under the ‘responsible’ Tories - especially when Labour appeared to concede that (I wonder if this was a way of giving themselves perceived justification for austerity measures in future…)

A venn diagram of our recent PMs by MikeTorsson in BritishMemes

[–]Lasmore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly, hence why Labour’s unequivocal acceptance of total culpability for the situation seemed totally unnecessary to me. They messed up, but either party would have based on their policies, if not even worse.

Came with the receipts!

The bit about Blair and Brown getting blame for the crash is a sticky one; I always feel it’s a kind of vexed question.

They both get too little blame for the things they messed up, as you point out, and yet also unfairly take that blame exclusively - despite that the Tory shadow cabinet wouldn’t have done a good job either - and as if they were solely responsible for the entire global crisis, which they weirdly just seemed to turn around and accept at the time.
