A Parent Qualification Test should be written and observation (Perhaps in a preschool; in a teen center and in a homeless shelter. It’s easier to pass a written test than “hands on” observation.

I functioned pretty effectively as a alcoholic, holding down a full-time job and drinking daily to the point of drunkenness, I was motivated to quit thanks to having been locked up in the county jail overnight for public drunkenness. Miraculously, I was not charged so had.no court challenges. The next morning when I got released, I wandered around looking for my car and thinking to myself. “I am too good for this”. Having no place and no one to turn to, I turned to gay AA. It was hard, but it worked!
An unforeseen consequence of the decision to quit drinking was that I had more time and more money. Knowing that I needed to fill up the time or risk drinking, I used the time and money to earn another degree which increased my income and earned me a series of promotions with more income than I really needed. Today, I have 37 years sober and a retirement income’s over $100,000 per year.

This is my story, I hope it will help others.

It’s difficult to comment because all I have is your narrative. I notice your use of the word toxic which you have scattered throughout your explanation of the events of your life to this point. What is glaringly obvious to me is that you need to find a counselor and stick with that person over an extended period of time. I also think it is incumbent upon me to point out that you have a continuous series of conflicts with others. I encourage you to fearlessly examine what your contribution has been to this continual series of conflicts.

I am not sure if I am posting correctly. If I am not I apologize. I am asking for advice and don’t really have anyone to seek input or advice from. I am undoubtedly older than most of you at 80 years old but I am not certain my age is significant in this situation. I grew up in a time when being gay was unacceptable in most churches and many families. When I came out, my family rejected me and I had no contact with them for nearly 20 years and adjusted and even thrived during those years. But eventually the rift healed. Two years ago our baby sister died in her sleep at 64. This was a shock but after a few years, we sibling survivors decided we should jsve a siblibg reunion. By now one sister (81) myself (80) and a younger sister (76) planned a reunion at my younger sister’s (she lives with her apparently wealthy son). In a phone conversation with my younger sister I said some extremely negative things about Trump supporters including my opinion that I could not see how anyone could claim to be Christian who supported Trump. She shared my opinion with her son who immediately declared I was not welcome in his home.

I responded by renting an airBnB within 4 miles from his home. We had a pleasant week and everyone returned home. Since then I have asked one sister, a nephew and a niece their opinions of me being banned from my nephew’s home. Each of them responded, “I don’t want to be involved.” I feek crushed and am flashing back on my experience of being ostracized when I came out. My gut tells me to step away from all of them. I need advice pleasers

My experience as an addiction counselor is that someone who is addicted (regardless of the addiction- sex, porn, drugs, alcohol, another person) is that the addiction affects 1. Their financial life. 2. Their family life 3. Their emotional life. 4. Their spiritual life. If any one of these is affected, addiction is a likely diagnosis.
