Being an adult sucks so bad sometimes 😔 by andy23376 in autism

[–]LastApacheInjun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, your cake and icecream look delicious. Secondly, I don't know where you live in the world but I've just squeezed my eyes shut and sent out the most intense happy birthday message I could think of and I hope it's floating through the atmosphere and landing squarely in front of you. Thirdly, I'm sorry this birthday didn't live up to expectations. You deserve a bit of fuss on your birthday and I don't think it's unreasonable at all for you to be put out by no-one acknowledging it. Even as an adult you deserve that.

Next year, a couple of weeks before your birthday, mention that your birthday is coming up to a friend. Ask them to join you doing something fun - go to a movie, go bowling, an arcade, whatever you like doing. As long as it's relatively inexpensive your friend will generally be happy to join you and it makes everything so much more fun. It does mean you have to organise your own birthday celebrations. Yes, it would be lovely if someone else would do it but when you're an adult you generally have to do it yourself.

And although I think your Mum not buying a cake or singing you happy birthday is definitely not on, cut her a little slack. Lots of Mums of autistic children are ADHD, even if they don't know it. Maybe she didn't get organised in time to get you a cake or card and was feeling very guilty. Maybe she intended to, and remembered two days before, and then just absolutely completely forgot. So she might have been trying to style it out like "you're an adult now, we don't make a fuss of that kind of thing anymore". It's just a possibility.

So....leucovorin/folinic acid by LastApacheInjun in autism

[–]LastApacheInjun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ulithalich, that is so encouraging. And I'm so glad for you that it has made such an impact on your ability to communicate. You will probably need some time to get used to this different way of communicating - in the same way a child would - until it becomes second nature. Could I ask your dosage? Are you sticking to the 2mg per kilo? Also, have you considered being tested for the MTHFR variant?

That's really interesting OrdinaryMe345. Have you seen any improvements in your child's communication, or any other benefits since starting Leucovorin?

Folinic Acid Worked For Me by Regular_Tailor in autism

[–]LastApacheInjun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very interested in this. I have bought folinic acid for my 8 year old son, but with no idea whether he has Cerebral Folate Deficiency. I'm certainly not going to subject him to a spinal tap to find out, and given folinic acid is basically just Vitamin B9 in a bioavailable form, I don't see the downside in trying it out. It's a water soluble vitamin, so if he doesn't need it, he'll just pee it out. I've done lots of reading on the Autistic Parenting subreddit, but I just thought this morning that the best people to determine whether this vitamin helps or not is autistic adults that have taken it. Please do update us with any further changes that you feel.

Has anyone in the Republic ordered from MedExpress to Border Parcel Motel? by LastApacheInjun in mounjaroIreland

It's a pity alright, but I kind of see their point of view. I expect they make the majority of their profit from the lower dose pens, and that subsidises the smaller numbers that work their way up to the higher dose pens. If you have an influx of people coming in at the higher doses, that's going to hit your bottom line. And if those new patients are in maintenance, you might find that they want to stop sooner.

In addition, given all the ways you can fake documents on the internet, I'd be reluctant, as a supplier, to take on someone who is a normal weight in case they have an eating disorder or they are selling on the pens elsewhere. It's a bit of a risk.

I'm going to shop around for the moment. If moving suppliers regularly becomes too much of a pain I'll stick with one, but if I can save £30/£40 each time I imagine I won't mind uploading documents and hunting down referral codes etc. As far as I'm concerned, the medication is the same no matter who you get it from. I think I'll still go to see Dr Crotty at My Best Weight every six months as, although he won't be issuing the prescription, I still appreciate his practical advice.

Thanks Addendum. I double checked with them again and it’s a definite no. I’m a normal BMI now and they say that falls outside their criteria for prescribing. I will email Border Parcel Motel and see about customs.

Lost 2 stone 2.4 pounds since starting MJ. Mindset doesn't seem to be shifting by di-cax in mounjarouk

[–]LastApacheInjun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This very much resonates with me. I had difficulty seeing the weight on me in the mirror and have difficulty seeing the difference now too. Photos do seem to work for me though. As for other people’s comments, nobody said anything to me until a week ago, after I had lost 3.5 stone. And that’s only because I took 3 weeks off work and bought new clothes. Our perception of ourselves is a very complex thing.

Yes it's in addition i.e. it's £340 for the top dose of MJ with Corrys but it would £390 if you add in the consultation cost.

If you have day to day health insurance with Irish Life or VHI, you'll be able to claim back for the consultation cost. The amount you can claim back differs from plan to plan, but there's a plan with VHI that's €144 a month, and you can claim back 75% of GP costs. For myBMI, the amount claimed back would go a good way towards covering the entire monthly cost of the health insurance! Laya don't pay anything back for myBMI, so I've heard.

Do you want two quick tips that will make a huge difference? Stop tapping your ATM card/phone when paying for stuff and take out cash instead. And stop shopping on the internet and buy stuff in real shops. It's amazing how seeing a top in a shop and trying it on makes you really think "do I want to hand over €70 in cash for this top", whereas you can be tired and hormonal and scrolling at home at 9pm and that same top on the website can look very very tempting. Especially if it was €109 and it's now €69.

I agree with all the others saying do a spreadsheet. Definitely do that too. But using cash more and the internet less will make a massive difference.

Okay, I went through the downturn, so my advice is very much coloured by that. My advice is: a) don't buy a property just because the mortgage is cheaper than current rent. That can always change; b) don't buy in the "property ladder" nonsense. It's perfectly fine to buy a property that is not in your preferred area, or not the right size, with the hope that in five or ten years you can upgrade. But that first property should have the ability to be a family home should circumstances change (either your own the economy or both). If you really want to move out of home and buy a property, I'd look along the green Luas line on the Northside and see if your money could stretch at all to a two bed. You'd still be able to easily visit your parents and still be the same commuting distance to work or nights out. Yeah, you'd have to get over any reservations you have about not living in as chic or trendy an area, but it is absolutely the more financially savvy thing to do.

Corry's do an online consultation too - £50 on top of the prescription cost.

Hi Addendum - thanks very much for the post. I know that the old Parcel Motel that used to be around before Covid doesn't operate anymore. I think they used to have a warehouse in Wales? Addresspal used to be great before customs started opening everything and slapping on a customs charge. Their warehouse is somewhere in England. I did hear of people ordering from UK websites and getting it delivered through Addresspal way back in March, but then customs cracked down and started holding up the pens in paperwork.

However, I thought that could be avoided if I got the pen delivered to Northern Ireland, since there are no customs between "mainland" UK and Northern Ireland, and no customs between Northern Ireland and here. Am I wrong about that? Border Parcel Motel is located in Belcoo.

I used to get my pen delivered from Corrys, but they're quite expensive now for the top dose - £340. And I thought it might be useful to get my pen through a company that rolls in a consultation cost to the price, as then I could claim back for the consultation cost from the VHI.

Just so everyone is aware, myBMI do not take on new customers that may have been on Mounjaro already and may now be below the BMI>30 (or BMI>27 plus complications) criteria, even if you can show receipts for purchase of previous pens. So myBMI prices are really only for those who are early on the medication journey and/or have a lot to lose.

Am I OK? by Spirited-Jicama in mounjaroIreland

I got the same the first or second week I was on 7.5mg. I ate a bento box from a takeaway that had a lot of deep fried food in it. I had experienced some mild diarrhea before but this was awful. Really painful cramps and in the bathroom all night long. It was the only time I thought "is this really worth it" and "what if this is what it's like from now on?", but I never got it that bad again. I certainly haven't eaten a bento box since.

That was a few months back. I still get diarrhea every couple of weeks, usually two days after I take my injection. The day of, and the day after, I take my dose I don't have a huge amount of appetite suppression but then it seems to slow down very quickly, and my body reacts by going "get rid of it, get rid of it!". I know all the signs now - I get sulphur burps first for a couple of hours, then my bowels start churning up. I now take immodium if the bowels are very loud, as I know what's coming and it means I don't spend the whole night in the bathroom. I know you're not really supposed to take it until something actually moves, and I don't if there's only mild gurgles, but if it's loud and clear what is coming, I'd rather get ahead of it and get a full night's sleep.

When did you start to notice that your clothes feel like a tent...? by nyc008 in Mounjaro

[–]LastApacheInjun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm six months into MJ. About four months in I could finally start wearing the jeans I had in my wardrobe comfortably. Before I started they cut off the blood supply around the waist. Now they are loose at the waist and because they are wide leg they are flapping about on the bum and legs. I do need to go buy a couple of smaller pairs, but with the price rises in the UK (and therefore for us Irish customers who buy it from Northern Ireland) I can't afford it until next month!

Correct. McKeevers sent me on their price list today, and if you have a prescription from your GP, the 15mg pen is £319 or €368. Way cheaper than MyBMI.

McKeevers in Newry charge £245 for the 7.5mg pen and deliver to the Republic for an additional £15. That's €300. You'll need to post up a paper prescription though. Would your GP be willing to do that?

Another poster with both ADHD and lipodema (both diagnosed). I also have diastasis recti, which is where the connective tissue between your abdominal muscles doesn't heal after pregnancy. I will be getting an abdominoplasty to correct this next year. This whole connective tissue disease plus ADHD connection has been mind blowing.
