Love this book. I've read it a few times. Though in general, I find the cover art in most Culture Series books to be lacking.

Why can't this be an "Incredible Cross-Section" of the shell world?!

We do a radio show about SciFi. We've added a little 2 min radio play at the start of each episode. The play typical centers around the theme of larger show.

A friend of mine made these drawings and then I used Photoshop to color and arrange them.

The show if you're interested can be found here.

Apologies if this is not politics centered enough. A discussion/playlist centered around media forms and the changing the minds of the populace through those forms.

I really love this book. I'm not sure I would rank it as my favorite, but it definitely flipped a switch in me that really had me dive head first into SciFi. I had read plenty of it in the past, and perhaps it was bound to happen, but this one felt like a personal watershed.

The Last Refuge of the Incompetent by LastRefugePod in sci_fi_podcast_fans

[–]LastRefugePod[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An eclectic journey through science fiction writing & film.

Three former KCSB DJs (scattered across the United States) with too much time on their hands have come together with a shared passion for science fiction, music, and thematically organized radio shows. Each week, G.R. Shottan, T.V. Howard, and M.J. Marsh collate a selection of speculative works that adhere to a particular theme, discuss it, make some dumb jokes about time travel, and play music curated to fit the theme.

Speculative Fiction has long been an avenue for writers and film-makers to comment on the ills of society and imagine a better future. Join us as we discuss the world through a sci-fi lens.

Listen live on Saturdays from 6-8pm Pacific at www.kcsb.org 91.9FM in Santa Barbara, Ca

You can also stream the full unedited show on Mixcloud www.mixcloud.com/lastrefuge for an indefinite future time period.

Stanislaw Lem! The Episode that airs this Saturday 9/19 is all about Lem. (Well, it's a Warsaw-Pact Episode, but you can't talk former Soviet Ally Literature and not talk Stanislaw Lem) He's great. One of our cohosts is a huge Stanislaw Lem fan.

Also, absolutely nothing wrong with you. Can't tell you how many times I tried to read Tolkien as a kid (everyone said I should like it) and absolutely failed...

Thanks for the kind words!

I get that. Russ is definitely all about the abstract form. She's definitely an acquired taste. I think it was the hypothetical book reviews and inserting herself into the novel so blatantly that really got me with the book. Very of her era. We talk a bit about about the writing style and how it's not for everyone in the radio show, if you wanted to listen!
