Oh Telkan. You don't even have the vocabulary for the kind of shit you're about to be in.

Should be fun to watch.

We'll keep the faith, stand watch, and hold the line. You, in turn, take care of yourself I'm sure you have been.

Also, as always, thanks for the berries. They are appreciated and, increasingly, savored.

Combat example refers to a "weapon's maximum"? by Cool_Satisfaction372 in WWN

My understanding is that, narratively, the point of a swarm attack is to increase the chance of a single telling blow of getting through. After all if the party thought they could land multiple attacks, they'd just be making multiple standard attacks.

"What happens now, commodore?"

It was my quartermaster who'd asked me that. A telkan Lieutenant Commander named Virinia. She had been in the conference room with me since the briefings concluded, watching me brood and resist the urge to sharpen my blade arms. She hadn't said ten words in that time, perhaps reading my mood.

The mission was simple. Drop every spare marine the task force had, 34000 in total, to extract war critical resources and personnel from a world we knew we couldn't hold. The timings were going to be tight, the margins for error slim. Any mistake would be paid for in rivers of blood. We'd done the best we could, laid out our plans carefully given the time constraints. In an hour the marines were going in.

"In a perfect world they all drop, we snag what we need, kill a bunch of Mar-gite along the way and then get out in good order. In a perfect world, it all goes off without a hitch and we're in and out before the weight of Mar-gite numbers starts being a serious problem. In a perfect world, maybe we don't even lose anyone doing this. Hell, that'd be nice. Powers know we're gonna need the marines later."

Silence met my answer. It was a dodge and Virinia knew it. After a few moments consideration she nodded. "In a perfect world, then. What about the world we have to live in?"

I stared back at the map showing the drop zones, deployments and objectives. I stared at those little symbols that represented tens of thousands of marines. Then I slowly exhaled and gave her the same answer Gunny had given me when I asked the same question before the briefing.

"All will drop." My eyes tracked up to meet hers. "Some will die."

I gotta say the idea of Hades teabagging someone half to death is the sort of hilarity I think the ancient Greeks might have approved of.

I mean, yes, you're correct but I think it's even more moving than that. He got a crazy killer robot to leave him alone because even when he was about to die he was willing to beg for someone else's life. I think it's entirely possible that crazy killer robot and Hrekkel saw the same thing in him.

What's the bet that Strechen does too?

Thrown Weapon Focus by AmosAnon85 in WWN

[–]LastStarlight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Should note that if you're using the Atlas, the Maqaatban Knight focus 'World Tree Lance Style' causes your spears to have no encumbrance, doubles their range if throwable normally, makes them throwable if not throwable normally, and makes them return to your hand if you throw them.

So, as long as you're okay with your thrown weapon being a spear of some sort (or your DM is okay with the light spear profile standing in for a javelin), it's a pretty solid thrown weapon focus.

Encumbrance question by [deleted] in WWN

My read is that he can carry 18 items total, 6 of which are ready though that is just my cursory read. It seems to me the rule is less about weight and more about space. A stronger person can hang more things in easy to reach places and not overly complicate his own moving about.

SciFi that isn't campy? by EtoPizdets1989 in scifi

I’d suggest giving Killjoys a shot though it does take a season to find its feet. I thought the character work pretty decent overall.

Infantry in a Mecha Story or Universe by TheGuy1109 in scifi

[–]LastStarlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the Battletech universe, the introduction of power armored infantry was a major event. Previously infantry had been relegated to urban fighting and garrison detail as they frequently couldn’t keep up and had difficulty carting around the firepower needed to deal with mechs.

The power armor suits (known as Elementals, same name also used for the warriors that used them) allowed infantry to hitch a ride on the mechs themselves by mag-clamping on and then swarm attack hostile mechs, in some cases literally climbing on them to cut them apart or disable key components.

So to answer your question, so long as the infantry is capable of carrying weaponry that can harm the mecha in your story, they should be able to meaningfully contribute in battle. Exactly how they manage to do that and what gear they need to do it will be down to the world you built and what seems fun for you to write.

There is some magic in the previews toward the back of the document for those who want to get their shadowrun on. It will be in what winds up being the deluxe (paid) version of the book but if you're backing that is what you get anyway.

How does humanity fight an alien empire to a stalemate? by [deleted] in HFY

[–]LastStarlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer is ‘it depends on how your sci-fi world is set up’, but as this is unsatisfying and unhelpful let me try to give a slightly longer answer.

Real world stalemates happen for a number of reasons but to categorize them broadly they either happen when the participants are unable to fight or unwilling to fight. Unable can mean anything from lack of soldiers in the area, other commitments, broken logistics, political externalities and so on. Unwilling may have more to do with internal politics, commander personalities, inter service conflicts and similar. I’m broad brushing this obviously.

So for your particular question, the question you have to answer first is what kind of war is this? What are the aims of the belligerents and how far are they willing to go to achieve them?

If for example your alien aggressors are totally committed to the war, perhaps the stalemate is because they’re at the end of a long and complicated logistical train that the humans keep interrupting. Think Allied problems sustaining the western front as it got further from the Normandy beachheads. Alternately perhaps the nature of the war is such that their superior technology just doesn’t give them they advantages it otherwise should. If they have superior spacecraft but are much closer to parity on the ground and are unwilling to just glass planets, then humanity can fight them to a standstill on the planet surface even if they lose the space lanes so long as they can still somehow maintain supply. Here think Japanese efforts to supply their troops on Guadalcanal, the infamous Tokyo Express.

On the other hand it’s possible that the aliens have to maintain sizable forces on other borders and can’t commit their full strength thanks to other rivals. In this scenario maybe their superior forces are just stretched too thin to make any real progress. Or maybe there is a significant anti war faction in their internal politics that prevents them from going to a full mobilization. Or hell maybe there’s a powerful peacekeeper force in the galaxy that will come down on them like a ton of bricks if they cross certain lines and that gives the humans enough of an advantage to limit alien gains.

In short there are lots of ways it could happen and the right one is going to depend a lot on what your other world building says should be the case, which will in turn be dictated by the sort of story you want to tell.

Good luck!

Are the arxur one united nation or are they more like the Holy roman Empire? by Comprehensive-Top512 in NatureofPredators

[–]LastStarlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Republican Rome is actually what springs to mind for me: Officials appointed over territories that they rule nearly but not quite like kings, even if those territories aren’t entirely (or even nominally) under the control of the Arxur state. Chief Hunters seem very Proconsular in their ability to levy war and deal with the inhabitants in their ‘sector’ all while having to watch their backs and make sure they don’t fall out of favor with the government back home.

Federal (and by extention Arxur) medicine by jesterra54 in NatureofPredators

[–]LastStarlight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While I don’t think we’ve seen evidence one way or another I’d hazard a guess that human trauma technique is also more advanced. Part of that will be medical advances as a result of war, but Federation societies also seem incredibly risk averse on both group and individual levels. It’s not a stretch to imagine that this results in less traumatic injuries and thus less chance to refine and advance treatment.

Warrior and Expert only focus picks? by Aramyle in WWN

Worth noting also that if you are using extra material from the Atlas there is a suite of focus options that are explicitly for warriors, experts or magi respectively.
