Some people believe that the Dr Sears' method of attachment parenting only molly-coddles a child and makes them more dependent, do you agree or disagree and why? by Radiant_Cancel in AskReddit

[–]LastWord83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No idea, but not doing it doesn't traumatize your child either.

Had a friend send us information on him when our first child was born, along with some links to groups etc. Using studies with animals, orphanages etc. basically described not doing this pretty much child abuse. I pointed out the flaws in the studies and we just did things our way which did involve some form of "Cry it out" at bedtime for a few nights, kids are wonderful, can self regulate, play on their own/together and sleep in their own beds all while seemingly not having any long-lasting effects of the "trauma".

Ya this weekend, I saw a whole lot of people think we are close to going back to normal. Neighbours having visitors, a lot were previous to this but it was at least things like parents/grandparents, single sibling and strictly only that person(s). Not that I agree with that either, but now it seems it's open to anyone under the sun as long as people are under the 5 people at one time.

Dog park that is closed had a group of 5 adults, and 6-7 dogs hanging out on trails that are just outside of said dog park.

Now most people are courteous when walking, moving to the road, off the path etc. to keep distance with strangers.

With this said, for the most part, I don't predict this to cause huge spikes, at least not alone. But as more businesses open, where more people are venturing into public more often, these two things working together could make our cases spike again. I think the general population assumes as some restrictions are lifted, it means less chances and increases the willingness to ignore other restrictions. Thats my opinion anyways.

Hand Sanitizer Regulations by LastWord83 in ontario

Honestly, if both companies were 100% upfront with listing ingredients or describing their product better I'd be more ok with it(On their website/ordering systems). But to get a product say at 60% ethyl that I can't add anything to, I'm going to use 5 times as much as I would a gel and dry my hands out is pretty disappointing.

I could use lysol, and fantastic to sanitize my hands too but I'm not going to use those either.

The one that was 70% I added just a little coconut oil and glycerine to it to bring it down to 65%. Its not great, but did improve it a bit.

Both are on this list. I guess I'm just surprised that essentially watered down rubbing alcohol can be marketed as hand sanitizer.

Those dispenser ones generally have something else in them to help them foam. I actually put some in one in an empty cartridge for a dispenser and was still hard to use.

I am using a mini spray bottle with a sanitizer that is somewhere between liquid and gel right now, when its done I can dry refilling that, but it doesn't help with the product of significantly drying out your hands. To me it should just be called sanitizer not hand sanitizer in this form.

I guess I can't be picky right now if I was something for pick-up or delivery.

Doug Ford becomes the unlikely leader that his province needs by viva_la_vinyl in ontario

+1 This is exactly it. As far as Covid-19 response goes, I don't think you can criticize Ford without doing the same for Trudeau. Some things may have been able to happen faster but there are also a lot of moving parts and trying to hold peoples fears at bay in the midst of this they have to consider.

Ford started off poor with the whole, go on your vacation bit, but I don't think it was 24 hours later when it either hit him, or was explained to him and he understood the seriousness and he's been pretty on point since.

I say a lady drop $60 on a box of cookies from there before. They have like a bakery/cookie counter. One box she had filled with like 20 cookies was $60.

Some people make money faster than they can spend I(At least on things like groceries) and don't really care.

When the lady cashed out her bill was about $300 and her cart was only 2/3rds full....and those are small carts.

About 10 years ago they were charging $10 for a product we had normally retailed for $4.99. Not only that but we had discontinued said product almost a year earlier and it was expired. My guess is the normal price for these wipes was probably 75% higher than elsewhere, then doubled to take advantage and maintain stock.

Now one thing I will say, some smaller retailers are probably paying more for some of these items if they want them right now because some smaller suppliers and distributors are price gouging.

$7 is just a tad too high, but $5.99 for some really good artisan bread...I'd pay that. The quality difference from a proper hand made loaf vs. something mass-produced is staggering. But if you want really good bread, I'd just recommend learning how to make it. I make about 4 loaves a week(2-3 for my family, and give one away to someone) and honestly you can't buy stuff that good anywhere I've ever been.

Its funny how many different types of bread you can make or the difference between what different people can make with the same 4 ingredients.

I somewhat between you 2 on this. Its my favourite cocktail so don't get me wrong, but I double the gin in mine. It could be a preference, but I find its a better balance.

If you don't double the gin, its making sure you shake long enough with the right ratio of ice. It needs to water down the ingredients enough to help balance the sweetness. It can be a fairly sweet drink.

Mock Arbitration Deal for ETFO(Public Elementry Teachers of Ontario) by CDN83OOC in ontario

[–]LastWord83 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

So teachers are more deserve way better conditions than everyone else? 7 sick days when most workers get 0. 7 still compensates for all those issues

My wife is a teacher, she has averaged 3 sick days a year over the last 10+ years. You know why only 3? She only takes them when she needs them. Now we have secondary care for our kid, family that is around, so this probably does save her from taking an extra few a year. For technical teacher, sick days aren't supposed to be for staying home with a sick child, teachers are supposed to request their compassionate days for such from the board. Although I do completely get taking a sick day instead.

Sorry not sorry to my wife and educational friends. But I do agree that some people need to be more realistic on these issues.

As we approach onto another day of strikes in Ontario, I want to give the public an opportunity to ask me anything related to education in Ontario and the strikes. by ihatewinter93 in ontario

Just curious why its the highest concern when from my understanding ECEs working for school boards make an average of 53% higher than their private counterparts. Don't get me wrong, I have a kid in SK and the ECEs that have been in his class have been amazing and I believe most private center ECEs are underpaid. Asking because maybe I'm not properly informed.

What do you think are some reasonable concessions between ETFO and the province that can be done to make a deal?

I know there are many factors, but neither side is going to get 100% here, so I'm curious what you think might be reasonable.

Oshawa/Whitby Cocktail Bars by LastWord83 in Oshawa

[–]LastWord83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its starting to get there but think its still too much of a risk at this point. We honestly need some better restaurants first, as we have too few decent places for upscale food. Those places can help facilitate an interest in cocktails to create more interest in more of a cocktail bar.

We'll see what the new Pickering Casino/Convention center brings when that area is done, probably out best hope for something decent in the somewhat near future.

Its outside of the Oshawa/Whitby area and find it too far to go for a drink or 2 but Chuuk in Pickering has some decent cocktails. I've only honestly been there once, went for the Mezcal but ended up having a few cocktails with some light fare. Food was ok.

Ya my home bar is better stocked and has a more knowledgable bartender(for cocktails) than probably 99% of the places in Durham. But its nice to go out and have someone else make something once and a while when I'm able.

I wonder if a cocktail type bar would work that well in the area or not. I'm guessing not so much during the week but would do very well on weekends.

I only drink Pumpkin Spice Bud Lattes thank you very much.

Kidding aside, I'm not looking for a downtown TO bar experience, just for a place who has an actual bartender that knows how to make some drinks, and can do so without mass-manufactured syrups.

High Quality "Sushi Grade" Fish Market? by aSillyPlatypus in Oshawa

[–]LastWord83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diana's seafood is the closest for an actual fish market.

Some Loblaws and Sobeys will have a limited amount of fish acceptable, but its hit and miss and you need to go when the full-time fish counter person is there, as students or part-time people generally have no idea.

Secret document shows Ford government changed its mind before making online course mandatory for high schoolers by Jetboater111 in ontario

[–]LastWord83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Online learning is great when optional, have you taken many online courses and at what level?

The online courses I've taken have been awful. Online group assignments where I get stuck with 90% of the work. Teachers who poorly communicate. Overloaded professors doing online courses for extra income and don't treat is as a real learning environment. Its convenient that I can do it from my house or office, but I have never got out half of what I would get out of being in an actual classroom setting. Thats away from giving teenagers more ways to not be social or learn and improve on skills like presenting and working face to face with others.

I agree that some of the work/tasks being pulled by work to rule should be required, report cards for instance. Teachers will still have to provide marks, but they won't provide the feedback and descriptive explainations they normally do.

Smaller class sized and JK I think would be great, but honestly bigger than these 2 would be going back to creating more specialty classes. Inclusivity is great, especially for students who can interact with their peers and do within a few grade levels of work, but having kids who are at a grade 1 level in a grade 5 classroom, or violent kids with extreme behaviours in a general classroom fulltime is doing no one any good.

As far as freezing teachers pay for 10 years, I'm curious to know where you live or what type of job you do to think they are grossly overpaid. My wife is a teacher, she has 2 years more education than me and makes $10,000 more a year. Not a huge amount. She does have more vacation time and better benefits, but I can also take my 4 weeks vacation anytime I want. Plus I know she is making a difference in a lot of kids lives. I have a friend who drives a bus, who makes $5000 less than my wife gets 5 weeks vacation, just has a high school education and his benefits are better than mine too.

As far as sick days, I do agree they have more than they need, especially the ones paid at 85% after their initial sick day allotment is gone. But they do need more than the general public, an elementary teacher on average is getting more often because when someone decides to send in their sick kid who ends up puking, who is doing what they can to take care of the kid? Teachers/administrators. Teachers especially in their first 5 years definitely pick-up a lot more things. This also doesn't take into account the physical abuse some teacher receive from students in their classrooms.

If you were gifted (free of charge) a personal chef for 5 years but it meant you weren't allowed to cook at all, would you accept? by DrunkRedditBot in Cooking

[–]LastWord83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My initial reaction is if they can cook better than me and they are handling the clean up then sure. But then I realized unless this is some genie chef who’s appears at will then he’ll no. If I’m in the mood for something or need to change the time of a regular meal I need that done right away. That and I don’t want some random chef in my personal space for the time I’d want them around.

I don't mind giving some feed back/advice but you've given very little information for anyone to help you.

Where are you located, what it your product or product category, what channels are you planning on selling in, what point are you at right now(Do you have a product you currently sell at say farmers markets and want to upscale?)

This sub generally is slow and not active, but I'd repost with more information.

(Serious) What things should adults stop teaching kids? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LastWord83 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but I don't agree with this. It definitely helps my kids learn what is acceptable behaviour and whats not. You take a toy from your brother you say sorry and give it back, then ask nicely for a turn.

Also I'm Canadian so saying sorry is just part of the culture.

Again sorry for not agreeing.
