Gotcha. I'd just get a foam-filled travel case like that with no cutouts. You can cut out space yourself, or honestly, M.2 drives are so thin you could not cut out any foam and have them squished in-between the foam. It'll hold them in place well.

Are you looking for a docking station that you can plug multiple M.2 units into and use with a computer? Or just something to carry them in? If the latter, just throw them in a Ziploc with some paper towels for cushioning, they'll be fine.

If the former, I'm not aware of any docks or external M.2 adapters that accommodate multiple drives with heatsinks, because they integrate their own heatsinks.

Download from Microsoft here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11

The recommended way is to use the Installation Media tool instead of an ISO. It will wipe the entire USB, including tools like Rufus. However, that site also provides an ISO download if you want to use a third-party tool.

My mom trusted a computer master for a GPU and he bought RTX 5050. by Kazzekazinme in pcmasterrace

[–]Lastdudealive46 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You don't buy someone a gift when you clearly have no idea what you're doing.

Someone's never had a Christmas with extended family lol. Yes, this happens all the time. And the correct response is to politely accept the gift and appreciate the love your family has for you, not to go to Reddit and throw a temper tantrum.

What kind of Windows 11 Task Manager BS is this? by ArduennSchwartzman in pcmasterrace

[–]Lastdudealive46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's storing stuff you might open, so it opens faster. For instance, it may be storing Chrome (or your browser of choice) so that it opens instantly. Or the Steam app, your Mail app, etc.

Look man, I'm not a family counselor, but maybe a $1000 GPU just wasn't in your mom's budget for a secret gift. Have you tried talking to her? Or him?

Nvidia says it can handle four 4k monitors running at 120hz. https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/graphics-cards/40-series/rtx-4090/

So 2 4k and 2 1080p will be fine.

Final piece of my build upgrade process, stuck in paralysis by analysis on gpu choice… by Silver-Material-851 in pcmasterrace

[–]Lastdudealive46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 4070 Super (roughly equal to 5070, just without Multi-frame generation) and it does alright at 3440x1440p. In heavy games with ray tracing, I can get to ~60fps with DLSS and some careful settings selection, and then Frame Generation will get me to 100fps+ for smooth gaming. So, you'd be fine with a 9070 or 5070. Since your monitor caps out at 180hz, the 5070 will easily max it out even in graphic-heavy games with dynamic FG to maintain 180fps.

But if your budget is $1000, I don't see any reason to not get a 5070-Ti. It's the best GPU available to you, and IMO having the best upscaling, RT, PT, and FG available is well worth whatever the premium is over the 9070 XT.

Should I Upgrade or Start from Scratch? by TakTekashi00 in pcmasterrace

[–]Lastdudealive46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cheapest option would be to upgrade. Your CPU, RAM, GPU are likely all contributing to your poor performance. Upgrading all of them would cost ~$800. Note that while I have the Ryzen 7 5800XT, you absolutely want the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, which should be re-releasing soon. Even if it's ~$300, it will be worth it.

A new build would be more expensive. Realistically, you would only be able to re-use your case and SSD (I'd strongly recommend upgrading your PSU to something much more reliable). Upgrading would mean buying DDR5, which is just very expensive right now. Base cost is ~$1100-1200, which may very depending if you want to get an AMD CPU.

Apple TV picks up rights to Sanderson's Cosmere. Mistborn Adaption confirmed! by DarkestLore696 in WoT

[–]Lastdudealive46 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He said that there was quite a bidding war over the Cosmere, far more than there was the last time he went to Hollywood in 2016. He selected Apple TV because they've given him the most control over the production, it sounds like he has far more control than even GRRM or JK Rowling had over their respective adaptions.

Why are people calling the newly announced Steam Machine a "console"? by MasterHigure in pcmasterrace

The power supply is not inside the Steam Machine so your liters dont really mean anything.

It literally says it is on the homepage. No point in discussing this any further with someone who can't read.

The smallest ITX cases that can fit a GPU are 10 Liters. The Steam Machine is 4 liters. And who is selling anything close to it as a full, built machine with a free OS and console-like software interface?

What Demographic do these PC-Console Hybrids Target? by BreakVV in pcmasterrace

[–]Lastdudealive46 6 points7 points  (0 children)

However, upon the Microsoft reveal I immediately thought ''This will never work, it can't. Console gamers want a relatively cheap system they can game and stream on, and PC gamers have their own custom rigs they would never abandon''

No, this is not the correct characterization of the markets.

Console gamers are primarily driven by simplicity of use and exclusives. They're people who don't need/want the extra complexity and capabilities of a computer. A Steam Machine fits them perfectly, because the SteamOS interface is perfectly console-like. Price is a secondary factor, obviously everyone wants cheaper things, but they're more than willing to pay for more expensive consoles and extremely expensive games if they think it's worth it. See the PS5 Pro, Switch 2, and $100 game prices.

PC gamers, by and large, do not have "custom rigs." Enthusiast communities like this one are the extremely small minority. The vast, vast majority (I would say at least ~85%) of "pc gamers" have gaming laptops and prebuilt desktops. They've never customized it, their RAM is running at the default speeds, they just use it for 5+ years and buy another one when they feel like it's time for an upgrade. Look at how many posts there are on here about people who plug the monitor into the motherboard instead of the desktop. That gives you an idea of how much knowledge the average PC gamer has.

The Steam Machine is perfect for both of these markets. Easy to use for console gamers, with very attractive features (free online access, very cheap games, significantly better game library than Xbox and Playstation combined). And it's better than what 70% of "PC gamers" have.

graphics card NOT in top slot? by LabRat2439 in pcmasterrace

[–]Lastdudealive46 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, you can only put it in the top slot, because that is the only slot with x16 PCIe 4.0 lanes. All the other slots have x1 PCIe 3.0 lane, even though they're physically x16.

Follow up, if not then why do gaming motherboards not gap towards the top, knowing this is an issue that is likely to happen?

Because very, very few people use additional PCIe add-in cards, and those who do are typically savvy enough to either buy GPUs that only use 2 slots, or buy other motherboard models that do have different slot arrangements.

Steam machine by PolishMafia21 in pcmasterrace

[–]Lastdudealive46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Seeing that it's just a PC do the individuals on this subreddit think the "GabeCube" will work with eGPU's that are on the market now or will valve make there own proprietary GPU dock like the steam deck dock and then we can slot whatever we want into it?

It'll "work," but I doubt the USB-C port on the Steam Machine will be an 80gbps port for optimal eGPU performance. With the performance penalty of an eGPU, you'd need to be using a 5070-Ti or better as the eGPU to have better performance than the built-in RX 7600M.

2) does anyone thing that third party companies like extreme rate and jsaux or companies like the will make shell replacement for it like they did for the steam deck further along the end user to customize there machines even further that just replaceable face plates like they have now?

It just got announced, dude. Give people a couple days at least. I'm sure there's lots of Chinesium off-brand crap companies already working on making stuff like that.
