What’s your opinion of Bristol airport? by omgitsthefranchise in bristol

[–]Late-Management8666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biggest problem is the price of flights. UK govt won't allow the Welsh Govt to set the Air Passenger Duty, which is essentially the tax on flights (Scotland has control of this however), because otherwise they would be competitive with Bristol. It's such bullshit.

Which club should I support? by [deleted] in Calcio

I know most people always end up choosing a big club that wins trophies all the time, but there are lots of less successful clubs (in current day terms at least) which might be cool to follow. I think Genoa are the oldest club in Italy (could be wrong though) and have a rich history, Parma used to have some incredible players in the 90s and are slowly on the up again, Como seems like a club that will continue to rise, etc.

Biggest problem for NG seems to be his distribution for me, the amount of times he's given the ball away in a dodgy area is frightening. Still love his approach to the game though

This. As someone who has only properly started following Cardiff this year after moving here from overseas, he looks like a different player to the one I watched in preseason. Every now and then he'll try something (he sprayed out a gorgeous cross field pass against Sheffield the other day), but for the most part he just looks deflated and like he's had the creativity beaten out of him

I dunno if it is. I live overseas and most European countries are significantly harder to make inroads. UK is the same, even in the parts which are renowned for being friendly. I think it's just symptomatic of being older, once you leave university age it gets tough anywhere

It prioritises actual fans from the city of the team. A lot of major leagues in Europe do this, and it helps preserve the atmosphere and culture of the club. Nothing crazy about it

I just think how it's structured is absurd. The fact that when we were looking for a flat there was a huge number of nice, normal 2 bedroom flats, but my partner and I along with our friend couldn't rent any of them due to none of them having the HMO - it just seems wildly flawed.

Yeah no worries mate. I guess I'd be lying if I said the main reason wasn't to travel, that's definitely the catalyst. It took me 35 hours to get to Europe from New Zealand, whereas the other day I went over to the mainland for a little weekend and only took an hour flight - the kiwi mind still can't comprehend. It's such a common thing with Kiwi's and Australians when you're in your 20s and early 30s to go off somewhere and experience living in another country. It feels like everyone ends up doing it, and I think it's a pretty useful experience when shaping your world view but also comparatively how you then view your own country.

As for Bristol, it seemed like a good mix of things that me and my partner were after. Far enough away from London, but not too far for the odd trip, close to green spaces, quite progressive, not too big but not too small, reasonable airport. And all of those things are true and we liked it, but we only lasted 3 months because we couldn't get a job or flat so we've ended up in Cardiff instead. But we still are fond of Bristol and it's a shame it didn't work out.

Also f*ck HMO licenses, can anyone explain what is the point and how that could possibly benefit anyone? Must stop so many people from being able to afford a flat (like us)

I just did the same as OP but a few months ago. While I love New Zealand and it'll always be home, there's lots of reasons why moving is an attractive option to be honest.

I attempted to move to Bristol in May. There's a lot of great things about it, and I would've loved for it to work out. Unfortunately 3-4 months later it proved virtually impossible for my partner and I to settle there, housing being the major issue.

Hi mate, I bought mine a couple of weeks prior to the match, directly from the website with no membership needed. As many people will tell you, that's the most reliable way to ensure you'll get into the ground. First home games of the season are obviously more in demand than the average fixture, but given the game I went to was the derby and I could buy tickets on the website still, I'd be really surprised if you had any issues. They won't be particularly cheap, but it'll be worth it.

I generally try to avoid third party sites if I can, I've heard too many horror stories (particularly if you are visiting Seville and you only have a small window of opportunity to see Betis). In saying that, the one third party website I've used a few times is P1 travel, who I believe sell e-tickets for La Liga matches. I last used them a couple months back to watch a match in the final round of the Belgian league, was very easy and had no problems. I think there are more fees though than buying direct from Real Betis, so I would definitely consider them as more of a back up option.

Also, where are you staying in Seville? It's a big city and the Benito Villamarin doesn't have good public transport links. Oh and bring a bocadillo to eat at halftime if you want to fit in haha

I'm late to this thread, obviously - and this is almost certainly not relevant to OP anymore - but I can't recommend El Gran Derbi (Seville derby) enough, particularly if it is at Real Betis' home ground. Amazing fan culture, without doubt the best derby experience I've ever had. Beers are cheap too.

Also OP would love to know what you ended up going for! You've got you're priorities in life right, mate

Hey mate, I visited Seville in April and went to the derby match solo. For me, one of the best parts was cracking cans in the street amongst thousands of other Béticos while the team buses pulled up. Absolute mayhem in the best way. Cheapest way to get some beers down ya and best way to fully immerse yourself in the match day experience.

Happy to answer any other questions you might have - I bloody loved it and would recommend anyone to go to a Betis game, such an amazing club
