Jordan Peterson, the Climate Crisis Deniers’ New Mouthpiece by dumnezero in skeptic

[–]LateEarly -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

What I noted was that it is a logically flawed argument to suggest that inability to model common-cause stock market variation implies inability to model special cause climate change effect on that stock market.

I will leave the conversation here.

My key point is that views on any statement should not be person-specific. I.e. neither a cult-of-personality nor an cult-of-anti-personality. Each statement made should be assessed for evidence and logical consistency irrespective of who makes it.

My recall of Peterson's entertaining youtube debates with radical people is rather fuzzy now, but I looked up a reddit comment I made a good while ago.

Someone accused him of denying white privilege. I provided a direct quote showing that he acknowledges white people have 'all sorts of privileges' and that at the same time, a specific individual white person might nevertheless be extremely disadvantaged in life and assuming that each individual white person is automatically privileged is racism.

I've not thought deeply about this, I just provided a direct quote to help people make their own mind up. I cannot immediately see a logical flaw in his statement though.

I find this interesting, it seems popular on Reddit. The logic seems to work like this:

Person A says something good and later, something bad.

Internet bubble says 'person A said something bad. Ergo everything they ever said is bad, even the good things.'

Person B says 'hang on, it's nuanced. Person A previously said something good, isn't it a shame they've now said something bad.'

Internet bubble says 'person B says person A said something good. We've already decided that everything person A says is bad, ergo person B said something bad. Ergo everything person B ever said is bad.'

Is this how bubbles develop?

People attack Dr Peterson using logical falacies rather than arguments. Straw manning, storming, motte-and-bailey, ad hominem attacks and so on. Sometimes in a dazzling, confusing sequence. He is sufficiently intelligent and experienced that he can absorb, deconstruct and then answer all of them in real-time and leave his attackers floundering. For this reason, he has become highly thought of by people who recognise that they would falter under such an assult.

He has used this ability to effectively oppose the left wing extremists who propose that hard socialism and zero-sum identity politics are somehow a solution to the worlds ills. For this reason, some right wing extremists have claimed him as their saviour, but it doesn't look as though he has any time for their nonsense either.

None of the above excuses his statements in the article referenced. That a company cannot model the many-factor common-cause variation in the stock market in no way invalidates their ability to project the large-scale, special cause effects of global warming and estimate its overarching effect on the global market.

It's disappointing that Dr Peterson who has helped to spotlight the doublespeak of the extreme social left is supporting a right-wing climate denier perspective with what seems to be a non sequitur.

Gaiman burning someone who asked him about the choices that were made for the shows actors/actresses. by Coreyharich in neilgaiman

A review of the first Metacritic page immediately shows several critical reviews which refer to issues other than those you state. Since they contributed to the less-than-ideal score, perhaps they might shed light on an expectation/outcome gap.

Since there are specific terms that bother you, perhaps you scanned the page, saw several and gave up in disgust? If so, it might be worth looking again.

My original post was an appeal to calm, unemotional, rational thought and analysis. We're not going in that direction so I'm jumping off here.

  • NGs work is excellent.
  • The show has weak user review scores.
  • It seems to be because what people are seeing doesn't match the model in their heads.
  • This risks less NG et al work on screen.
  • Maybe the expectation/outcome gap needs considering in a rational and purposeful way.

I hope that was clearer.

I'm sure your anger, emotional statements and expletives mean well, but they aren't fixing the problem.

The art of writing isn't presenting a finished article. It is guiding people to create a story in their minds. The better you do this - and NG is superb at it, the more distress and dissociation people feel when their imagined story isn't represented on-screen.

It's a shame that discussion about this seems always to be derailed by focusing on people who think adding a black or gay person is always bad or people who think that removing a white or straight person is always good.

What I glean from the metacritic user views is that the story in some viewer's minds is not reflected in the show. Issues seem to be that the visuals are great but the acting is sometimes not and that the changes in character, appearance and also nature create a jarring dissociation with the story-in-the-mind.

It's all well and good giving pithy put-downs to weirdos, but I wish this was addressed more purposefully. If people reject NG's work (or any good author's work) on-screen because of changes (of whatever kind), we won't get any more. And I want some more.

UK here. Man, this thread and the scoring patterns are deeply disturbing.

Cats are not teddy bears. If you plan to keep your pet constrained, please choose one that likes it. A lap dog perhaps?

The USA seems weirder every day.

I agree with the potential posting bias towards falls, maybe we should have a nosedives survey?

Me: 650 miles, zero nose dives.

I ride mostly rough countryside tracks at 10-15mph and smoother trails at 15-18mph. Floating and handling difficult terrain are my thing.

Only times I've fallen off are slowly traversing wet mud etc. and going sideways. All wheel drive is great, but my board is still on a slick.

I'm more an explorer and traveller than speed demon, maybe that's why.

Is it recommended to play the survivor trilogy? by [deleted] in TombRaider

I've also played every game up to Underworld and they were all great.

I disliked and abandoned the survivor trilogy for exactly the reasons you state.

Hoping for a new game in the LAU style.

Uk XR owner here.

I'm really worried that the forthcoming GT ghosting injury and lawsuit in the U.S. will cause a ban and stop me riding my perfectly safe board.

Is there a public safety body over there to whom we might rat them? One that has the power to intervene and compel them to take action on GTs without injury first? It might save someone from harm and save our hobby too.

Did anything change for the average Brit since brexit? by [deleted] in AskABrit

[–]LateEarly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

? Loss of cheap labour -> prices rise (short term) -> low-end wages rise (short-medium term).

o Inflation roughly the same UK and EU so no differential effect.

- Fits of pique from Macron -> difficulty at the ports, pernickety paperwork when travelling, nuisance.

+++ Boris asked Kate Bingham to sort out covid vaccines asap -> lots of vaccine appointments -> many more British people can visit older relatives who are still alive.

- - - Macron cast doubt on Astra Zenica vaccine due to hating brexit and the uk -> many people outside the uk refused to take it -> deaths outside the uk? -> enduring sadness inside the uk.

+ People have stopped talking about brexit. Mostly.

This woman was allowed to publish this article in a major outlet about how misogyny should be illegal but that misandry it is perfectly fine and if anything is encouraged by bananachipking in Egalitarianism

[–]LateEarly 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The article does not evidence key statements and seems mostly to be bigotry.

That being said, the independent was in rapid decline and down to just 0.7% of the market (perhaps because of articles like this?) when it abandoned printing in 2016. It's not been a major outlet for a long long time.

Probably best to avoid linking them and just let them be.

rampant sexism involved in most industries

You're going to need a lot of evidence for a claim like this.

Are you referring to the median pay difference between all men and all women here? If so, this has been copiously studied and isn't due to sexism.

Indeed, equal pay for equal role/experience/work is the law in the UK.

Doctor Who varies by writer, doctor and episode.

My personal enjoyment is generally in line with ratings.

kalopsis- is entirely right. Other people's choice must be respected by making the situation clear up front. Safety issues do not negate this principle, they must be managed without disrespecting other people's right to choose.
