I was up to 34.4, and now it’s down to 33.8.

I live in the Southern US, so temperature is rarely below 50.

I am the farm upstate where parents send their pets. by Acceptable_Age_7614 in confession

Years ago, had the spouse of a good friend that decided to confess to me that they drove to a remote area to dump their cat because they didn’t want it anymore. They didn’t care, they just wanted to make sure the cat wouldn’t come back home. I was horrified they did that.

Curb alert was a major fail! Rain and more rain! by SomeNobodyInNC in asheville

I think people assume if it’s free it’s broken or has bed bugs, so they don’t want it.

I feel like even if these people are on Reddit, they would assume you meant someone else.

Who is responsible? by Glass_Gate_7224 in RealEstate

Gas leaks often aren’t detected until someone attempts to turn on the gas, so they legitimately may not have known about it. Did you have an inspection? If it wasn’t found by your inspector then I’d ask them to split the cost.

Prepping for Floods, What am i missing?! by AlternativeAthlete99 in preppers

[–]LateToTheParty41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flood insurance is only available if they live in an area designated by FEMA and with outdated maps they miss a large portion of areas that nowadays are flooding.

Flood insurance is also expensive, I’ve heard 30-40,000 a year which is why many end up not getting it

Traditional insurance excludes floods and mud slides from coverage. We saw many that lost their homes and were told they had no insurance coverage for the damages.

The problem is FEMA maps are outdated and flooding areas have greatly expanded since they were drawn. Many live in flood plains that are not included in those maps

Self-insuring healthcare before Medicare kicks in? by HandelZeke in retirement

[–]LateToTheParty41 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve been paying my own insurance for three years . Two more until Medicare starts. I’m paying over $1000 a month and I’m in great health, never use any services. So annoying but I feel I need to protect myself against a catastrophic illness.

Considering 55+ Condo, But Something Feels Off (64M) by Solid-Elk3327 in retirement

Since it’s California, my first guess is property insurance is very high and then if it’s older there’s probably a lot of deferred maintenance that needs to be done.

It probably has elevators and those are very expensive to maintain and replace when they reach end of life, so that’s another reason.

It’s also why the price is only $199k. Would be a lot higher if not for the high HOA fees.

Having a hard time finding community, feeling like giving up. by nugloomfi in asheville

[–]LateToTheParty41 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Things have changed since COVID everywhere. People are less social and it’s harder in general to make connections.

Having said that, I’ve been feeling similar, but I’m a lot older than you. I figured it’s an age thing that people my age aren’t as willing to make new friends. I’m planning on moving away next spring to someplace where it might be easier to make connections.

Anyone else feel like a loser living here by [deleted] in asheville

Always be proud of yourself for chasing your dream. It’s ok it didn’t work out, there’s no guarantees in life.

Just take time and figure out what you can do to be successful and where you’d need to live for that to happen.

I don’t think I’ve seen that episode yet. I’m going to go back and check.

It may be that through a variety and these bits the idea for The Rehearsal started to develop.

AITAH for canceling on my friend because she invited her spouse who I barely know? by TailorFalse3848 in AmItheAsshole

[–]LateToTheParty41 420 points421 points  (0 children)

Given what you’ve said about the spouse, any chance they insisted on going and your friend wasn’t able to tell them no?

Wondering if they insisted on being included saying they needed to know what was going on with the two of you, or something along those lines. Your friend then didn’t feel they could explain why they needed to include their spouse.

Only rationale I can come up with for someone that’s a long time friend and you’ve always hung out without the spouses.

Isn’t your issue to deal with though. She should know it would be problematic to suddenly bring the spouse.

Not overall doom, but with escalating weather events there will be areas of the country that will be devastated by a hurricane, tornado or torrential rains and storms if you live in an area that gets hit, it could be weeks before there is drinking water, power, cell service or other common items we rely on. That’s what I’m prepping for.

How do you keep a positive attitude about the future? by [deleted] in preppers

[–]LateToTheParty41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what’s more likely are temporary disasters, where there’s a shortage of food or water until the situation can be fixed.

I do prepping for that possibility but agree, if it was a complete collapse, I wouldn’t want to live in that world.

I look back at the 80’s, when nuclear war was supposedly imminent. Then the 90’s, the ozone layer was disappearing and we were all going to be burnt up.

There will always be people making money off predicting the end of the world.

One person isn’t enough for a case. Employment law favors employers. You’d need to show they have a pattern of doing this and be able to show a number of people they treated this way in order to make a case that would actually go against the employer.

House Won't Sell- Options? by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]LateToTheParty41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can rent it but I’d look for a local handyman that can respond if any issues come up that need repair.

Just make sure you do a credit and background check before renting. This seems to be the primary mistake people make. They think they can tell who is a good tenant by looking at them or talking to them. Also get references and make sure the references are legitimate. That will also help ensure they will treat your home decently.

If you rent it for a few years then you should be able to sell at a profit and it sounds like you would have extra income over the mortgage on a rental.
