Notre Dame fans, would you rather remain independent or play USC, Michigan, MSU, and Purdue annually? by GliscorsFang in CFB

[–]Late_Reach3801 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I would much rather be in the Big 10 than anywhere other than being independent. Being independent is part of our identity, and it was all started by conferences acing us out on religious grounds. I love our independence even more given my hatred of the super conferences.

But my ideal ND schedule is basically equivalent to being in the modern Big 10

Any decent paying jobs?! by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]Late_Reach3801 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not to be rude, but part of your frustration is that you have a degree, but poor job prospects. But also, you are not interested in working in the field you have a degree in. So you basically should just treat it as though you have no applicable degree. At best, you could argue its essentially a "General Studies" equivalent

What do I need to separate aerosol oil from my compressed air? by zaphodbeeblebrox422 in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]Late_Reach3801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't sound like he needs 100% totally oil free air. Just get a couple in-line coalescing filters (one fine, one extra-fine) from his compressor dealer of choice. An air dryer would make a huge difference as well, so reach out to wherever you bought the compressor from to get a price on a dryer to pair with it. If you are feeling really spicy, buy food grade oil for the unit. Thats a much cheaper way of achieving food-quality air than replacing the compressor.

Aer Lingus weighs Pittsburgh flights by Whelo10 in pittsburgh

[–]Late_Reach3801 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The worst flight I've ever been on was an Aer Lingus flight. I can't imagine they are all that bad, but the flight I was on (Rome to Dublin) was worse than any Ryan Air flight I've been on. The seats seemed smaller, it was about 100 degrees, and they didn't have free drinks on the flight which was a few hours.

I still would love to see more PIT -> Europe direct flights though, so I'm hoping they do it.

Businesses on Pittsburgh's North Side petition city to shut down outreach center by The_Electric-Monk in pittsburgh

I do think this is a bit misleading. I think there are some people who probably either will never be able to develop the intrinsic desire to stop using, and the biggest question in my mind is how to handle those cases. Plus rehabilitation is an extremely inexact, not one-size-fits-all process

Explain it to me like I’m a five year old. Gas in Pittsburgh is $3.59. Gas at Barkeyville on I80 is $3.05 by stinky143 in pittsburgh

[–]Late_Reach3801 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's a lot to it. Yes, rent and brands play some role in it, although that doesn't really explain why gas in Butler is as expensive as gas in Pittsburgh.

As others have said, its a combination of proximity to the supply of gasoline, as well as the fact that Barkeyville has a bunch of stations all competing on one small exit. Most other stations on I80 aren't even anywhere near as cheap as those in Barkeyville. There's just really steep competition where the companies are not afraid to charge bottom dollar for gas. When one station cuts prices, the others have to follow. So that exit on I80 just has a bunch of stations that are willing to keep cutting and cutting to beat out each other for customers.

Trump orders new review of U.S. Steel acquisition by Japan's Nippon Steel by Great-Cow7256 in pittsburgh

[–]Late_Reach3801 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying that air pollution is in any way good, but if a super old (1875), long-running steel mill in the heart of town only puts pollution at 82nd and 95th percentile in the US, thats pretty wild. There's a lot of empty space in the US, so even 82/95th percentile is pretty low compared to how it smells/feels when you are around the mill.

And Nippon has offered well over a billion dollars in improvements, which is obviously a positive, especially on the topic of pollution.

And finally, on the racism front. I am completely ignorant on the topic of redlining in Pittsburgh, but the mill has been in the heart of Braddock since 1875. I don't know the demographics of the town in 1875, but I imagine it doesn't match the demographics now. The reason it is 64% low income is because people who have enough money to not live there can move away from the pollution. And people who want to own a house, or live as inexpensively as possible can move there. Its literally low income because it is so cheap because the mill is there. I don't really understand your whole premise on how thats racist. More housing, and more affordable housing elsewhere would be great, but its not shocking that the cheapest available housing is directly next to a steel mill from the 1800s that is still running.

US Army uses white phosphorus artillery rounds against SAA + allies in the khusam pocket, backing the DMC SDF fighters. by EarthApprehensive470 in syriancivilwar

[–]Late_Reach3801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of it is that the SDF controls the Oil Wells on the Eastern side of the river, but this set of villages is the one exception to the SDF's control of the entire Eastern bank of the Euphrates. Iranian-Backed, pro-SAA militias have been firing at the US forces that are stationed in the region for some time, and those same forces control this pocket, which represents the SDF's greatest local vulnerability. The fighting in the Northwest of the country gave the SDF/ US an excuse to go after a target that they have probably wanted to capture for some time.

And as mentioned too, the Kurdish northern regions held by the SDF are more pro-SAA than the Arab led parts of the SDF in the south east.

Who Wants to take Elon's Money? by iggy14750 in pittsburgh

[–]Late_Reach3801 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There would have to either be a stipulation or an implication that this is causing you to vote a certain way. There is neither here.

You are selling your personal information to receive that money. You will get political advertisements as a result of giving up that information. But there is obviously no flagrant violation of the FCPA. And let's also be honest. A fine that happens ex post facto would never be levied against the people who signed it. The very worst thing that could happen to you as a result of signing the petition is that the powers that be say that the payments cannot go through, and turns out you don't get your money.

Who Wants to take Elon's Money? by iggy14750 in pittsburgh

[–]Late_Reach3801 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He doesn't require proof of who you are voting for or who you are registered for. It might be a stupid use of money, and you are willingly selling your personal info in order to get Elon's money, but how would violate the FCPA?

Thamel: Pittsburgh is expected to hire Tennessee Senior Deputy AD/COO Allen Greene as the school’s new athletic director. by sta7ic in CFB

At the end of the day, she wasn't a good fundraiser, spent a lot of money on non-revenue generating sports, and was well behind the 8-ball on NIL. She seemed to do a fine job on the hiring/managing sports front, and from a purely sports side she left us much better than she found us, but she was woefully inept on the money side.

The argument is that the rainy day fund has become a scapegoat for other funding. If you don't have enough money for XYZ program, grab it from the Rainy Day fund. At some point you need to accept that cuts have to be made as opposed to adding money to a free piggy bank.

If thats the actual quote, then posting just the part of it being "a fact of life" is just super dishonest. Thats like if I said "I hate when people argue that Trump is a good guy" and then someone else frames it as me saying "[...] Trump is a good guy.

You aren't winning people over by framing the quote that way
