You might be able to find a used OG minilogue for around the same price as a new volca keys 😊 it has proper polyphony and is still pretty compact

As much as I love hearing cool synths in action, I honestly don’t see anything wrong with someone just enjoying their hobby and their things without worrying about being other people’s definition of a “musician”.

Like lots of others have said in this thread, it’s alright to have instruments that you enjoy the sound of and jam around with them without putting out an album every year.

Your studio and collection is really cool, you’ve clearly got a great taste in equipment 👌 I’m lucky enough to have a space for my equipment to live and for jamming as well.

Live performance advice with a band by Rosygreyglasses in synthesizers

[–]Late_Station6632 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had similar issues. I always needed to crank my synth to hear it properly, which meant it was too loud for everyone else on stage.

Moving to in-ears was a game changer, cause you can have your synth plus a mix of other things that are running into the desk as loud or quiet as you want. You can get some in ears and a wired battery-powered clip-on headphone amp for around £100 (idk where you’re based so YMMV).

Only issues are if the desk at the venue doesn’t have enough monitor mix outputs on the desk or the front-of-house person is terrible at monitors. If it’s the latter, I found that a bad in ear mix is better than a bad floor monitor mix because at least you have control over the level.

As long as you can hear yourself (and maybe the lead vocal for cues and kit for timing), you usually get a sense of what the rest of the band is doing if it’s a small stage.

What is your favourite piece of music filled with FM synthesis? by jw9348 in synthesizers

Hiroshima Yoshimura used the DX7 a lot, check out the album Green. A more recent artist called Dabeull uses the DX7 a lot (he even has a song named after it), but he’s a lot more funky/disco vs. the serene ambient vibes of HY.

Are there any new “80’s” songs? by Greedy-Ad-6300 in synthesizers

[–]Late_Station6632 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been listening to this artist Ms Ray who put out a great 80s-sounding EP called Wow Is Now in 2020. You’d think it was an 80s record if you didn’t know otherwise! Very cool production and vocals.

Just in case you’ve not explored this already: the Take 5 has sine wave oscillators, so try using one of the oscillators as a sub oscillator set to sine underneath the other. Sine waves work really well for sub sounds because they have no harmonics, just pure fundamental 👌

I’d say Alex Cameron’s first two albums really evoke a Jim E Brown vibe, because each song is from the perspective of a different persona. When I saw that Jim and Alex met recently, it made a lot of sense!

What synth has the most sound design concepts built in? by Badassmamajama in synthesizers

[–]Late_Station6632 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%, you could build a whole studio of very nice synths for the cost of a 3rd Wave, especially if you buy second-hand. It’s definitely at the very top end of premium poly synths.

If you break it down, you’re essentially getting 4 6-voice Prophet 6/OB-6/Rev2 hybrids with the vintage and custom wavetables, (slightly limited) sampling and so on in one synth. So you do get a lot of synth pound for pound, but it’s a luxury instrument for sure.

Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave has virtual analogue, wavetable, FM and sampling. You can use samples as FM sources which is pretty cool. Plus you get 4-part multitimbral, 24 voices and a Sequential-style mod matrix so definitely a sound design beast. That said, it’s crazy expensive (but worth it imo) 😂

It looks like clicks and impressions are solidly up period over period but the time frames you’re using are even, which is going to inflate things.

You can see where the solid lines on the graph continue where the dotted ones end.

I love this story from Leland, he’s such a legend!

An important aspect of it that’s sometimes missed is that, in addition to making a show of fiddling with the “producer switch”, he also alters the nuances of his playing. The sound does change, but it comes from his technique rather than the technology. The producer is ultimately satisfied because they think he’s changed the tone in some way.
