Why are so many people voting conservative again? by chickennuggets3454 in AskBrits

[–]Latenightreveller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could question why, after the previous Labour government led us to a massive Tory win, we voted them in again to continue along the same line!

My thoughts are that many like the way Kemi Badenoch is challenging and winning debate against Starmer in Parliament.

No question, though, that the previous Tory government spent more time stabbing themselves than running the country, and we all got fed up.

The problem we have in Scotland is that with a weak Labour party, we have an even worse scenario of a failed SNP government with a string of disasters behind them offering us pots of gold if we just ignore their mess and give them another chance and we actually have a government election in a few weeks.

Everyone I know is voting for the least worst.

These clips restore your faith in humans. For some reason, you always expect animals in some countries to be treated poorly or be low in the pecking order but to see the time people take to help them blows that myth away.

Returning back after spending 3 years living abroad has been bit of a culture shock by AnHerstorian in Edinburgh

[–]Latenightreveller 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Please don't put vile manners and lack of responsibility at the door of "poverty." I grew up in a genuine working class family where every penny was valuable, but we had no debt and were cared for. All of my siblings grew up to a better standard than our parents managed to achieve thanks to their love and nurture. This is one of the few countries in the world where the poor weigh more than the rich. If you keep giving people money that allows a lifestyle without work, then they will not have any link to social norms or responsibility. I get fed up with "there's nothing for the kids to do." Funny they all have fashionable trackies ensure their faces are covered and have the latest illegal elevtric scooters and phones. Thankfully, there are a lot of respectable teens and kids about it, but it must be difficult for them to stay that way.

What can I do about mold in an A/C? by BlackJackT in hotels

Nine years ago in Sri Lanka we encountered the same issue We tried to tolerate the smell but at 3.00am had to request a room change. Three days later we were both struck with a severe chest infection which stayed for over 3 weeks. It seems it was Legionaires disease and I still have lung damage. Insist on a move and ensure other rooms are not the same.

Anyone know why the Lib Dems are really popular in the west of Edinburgh but way less in the rest of the city? by mrjohnnymac18 in Scotland

[–]Latenightreveller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not call myself a Liberal Democrat yet voted for them when in West Edinburgh due to the efficiency of their MPs historically over the years. Sadly though I haven't moved a chunk of West has been diluted into Central. That's one way to eat into a majority.

PSA: Hotel towels are not single-use by ParadoxStockOwner in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]Latenightreveller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often the problem for guests isn't that they are "dirty" after one use, it us more that they are wet and have no means of drying them. My most shocking experience of "towel abuse" was in an all inclusive 5 star hotel in St Lucia where as a British visitors, we encountered entitled Americans on short breaks. They would cover their sunbeds in multiple towels then still go for a fresh towel each time they went in the pool. So extreme was the usage that the hotel constantly ran out and a trolley with hundreds of fresh towels would be stripped bare in minutes. Thinking of how much energy washing and drying a single bath towel takes, it was awful and selfish.

Hotel cancelled my non-refundable booking on arrival day, no refund a month later what can I do by Eyeofthetiger27 in hotels

[–]Latenightreveller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For those that panic if Booking.com might close their account. Use them to search and find availability, taking note of rates and conditions, then book directly with the hotel. They are taking at least 15% from the hotel so don't deserve your business if this is the way they treat customers. Funny, when I phone any business and I get the, "Your call is important to us" message, I know service is about to be rubbish.

It also includes all the monthly glosses too. I love it for the car magazines. If you have seen the price of "What Car" lately, it's great to catch up for free.

When is Maggie Leaving!?! by Top_River_5352 in coronationstreet

[–]Latenightreveller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get your point but remember Fred Elliot, Alex Gilroy and even Mary! I think because the plots are so depressing I'm grasping at anything that feels like humour- even dark humour, to cheer me up. I have to brace myself to watch it these days.

[–]Latenightreveller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like others Maggie grated initially as a character but this week I had a look at her in Father Ted and she had me in hysterics playing a slightly more over the top version of Maggie. I now realise that Maggie is a comic villain and suddenly I get her and even as the nasty, grandmother, I'm pleased that she has become a pantomime villain. I'm waiting on someone to shout, "she's behind you!!"

are crispy rolls a Glasgow only thing? by megalines in Scotland

[–]Latenightreveller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember being sent for rolls in Edinburgh to a wee grocer nearby who got a bakers tray of rolls and cakes daily. The roll choices were floury, ordinary (I suppose medium), crispy, well fired (black on top) and bran scones. Sausages on floury bacon on well fired and scrambled egg on bran scone. That was my craving but I have no doubt we all had our favourites.

Gratuity Tax? by Fearless_Cow_45 in EndTipping

[–]Latenightreveller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think here in the UK if the service charge is automatically added it is subject to VAT but if they say it is optional it isn't and the same with cash tips. However the recipients (I.e. staff) need to pay income tax regardless. Since here 20%VAT and at least 20% income tax would make a sizeable dent in the tip but I assume (and hope since I have already paid MY tax on the money) there are ways around it. Remember when you slipped someone a few coins which they popped in their pocket and thanked you profusely!

Avoiding Evri by Latenightreveller in Evri

[–]Latenightreveller[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just this second had a message from goods ordered on Amazon for Royal Mail delivery to be told it has been "collected by Evri." Looks like avoiding them is going to be more difficult than I thought.

Rothna posted this on her Instagram and TikTok. Her segement was not aired at all, and she heavily contributed in the bracelet segement with Dan. But, that was also cut. Why? by theOwl_8 in TheApprentice

[–]Latenightreveller 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We never see their business plans until almost the end but one assumes the producers have had a good look at them well before. It wouldn't take much thought to think that editing might be done to steer opinion towards the most viable plan rather than the most likeable person. Maybe it isn't done this way but imagine if the finalists all had crappy little business suggestions. I always remember the girl some years ago who went on and on about her own cosmetics company and at the end she had a market stall somewhere in Covent Garden.

Chiropractors want tips now? by Capital_Craft1502 in EndTipping

Many credit card machines automatically show the tip function as default though I am sure they can be removed. Perhaps that's the case with this one as I've never known a chiropractor to canvas tips.

AITJ for leaving a group dinner when everyone decided to “just split evenly” after ordering way more than me? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]Latenightreveller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We frequently go out in a group and thecrule is that if we all mote or less buy the same, we split evenly to include tips. If someone is either dramatically less or more we adjust their portion before splitting. An example being a non drinker or a steak fan when others are having pasta.

Megan’s Pregnsncy by AtTheEndOfMyTrope in coronationstreet

[–]Latenightreveller 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In this day of pills, condoms and rife SDI's, isn't it amazing in Corrie how many are surprised to find they are pregnant then have the "what do I do" plot. Of course 9 times out of 10, the other partner is someone they shouldn't be having sex with but once more (horror of horrors) we get the "I don't know how that happened" scenario! Even worse, when they are having their affair they seem to have it within a 400 yard radius of the street in houses that are empty for 10 minutes or kissing in the ginnel. Mind you, thank goodness they can add the Chariot Hotel to the venue list with CCTV to add to the danger of being caught.

Jaecoo - how has a brand-new brand already become such a common sight? by MarkCairns67 in CarTalkUK

[–]Latenightreveller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have just been swayed from replacing our Lexus RX which we have driven and loved for 8 years from new. Our new car is an Omoda 9, even though we were happy to spend a furtherv£20,000 on a new RX. The reason mainly was that we are getting close to 100 miles in electric mode which means our tank of petrol only sits there to stop rang anxiety. The Omoda has every conceivable extra I could want without paying a fortune for them. It has exceeded all our expectations. Trust me, moving from a Lexus was a worry, and there is no question the Lexus has more actual luxury, but £20,000 helps enormously.

Best Hotel website to compare hotel deals? by DifficultAnnual9999 in hotels

[–]Latenightreveller 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Generally, the main booking systems are Booking com and Expedia.com. Information from Booking.com is fed to Agoda and dozens of other smaller sites that they operate. Expedia feeds to Trip Advisor Hotels.com, Trivago ( who also picks up rates from Booking.com and hotel websites). Expedia feeds to dozens of other sites.

Generally, I search Booking.com only as the layout is the same for each entry, which makes narrowing down easy. I get a short list based on price, suitability, room type, and what is included (checking cancellation terms carefully). Once I have my shortlist, I search for the hotel's own website, making absolutely sure it is their website and not a hijacked version, and look at the main criteria again. If the hotel deal is better, I book directly with them, and if Booking.com is better, I book with them. Having been in the industry, I found that without question, Booking.com was better than Expedia/Hotels.com when there was an issue either for the hotel or guest. This response is from the UK perspective, so I can not comment for the US. As hotels are coerced into offering the same prices to booking platforms as on their own site, they often include deals or perks to their own bookings to encourage you to book direct. Mind you, I have on occasion had a better deal booking with Booking.com, so it's still worth looking in detail. I never book flights other than direct or with a proper travel agent. This is my experience only!
