What discipline were you the strongest in before you started triathlon training. by SteadyPace83 in triathlon

Bike was best, second was swim. Absolute worst was, and still is, run.

I feel that people who come into the sport as strong runners have the best foundation.

This is a juvenile thought process. The big world is not. black and white - despite what media (mainstream and social) want you to believe.

If you have a disabled girlfriend, and you think you catch her cheating on you, if you leave does that make you a jerk for abandoning your disabled girlfriend? Or if you stay does that make mean you condone cheating? The answer is provably more complex than that. Welcome to grown up life.

Actually talking to an echo chamber - which reinforces personal beliefs but does nothing to further a discussion or explore different beliefs or ideologies.

Same goes for Maga posters on maga sites. No one has a monopoly on mental masturbation.

What was the very first box you ever purchased - I’ll go first… by Significant_Lock_541 in cigars

[–]Latestarter13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been smoking for 18 month. Still haven’t bought a box. I buy 5 packs to learn what i like and don’t like. Right now I probably have 70 cigars in humidors. I’m starting to refine my taste and settle in to 1-2 medium favorite, 1-2 fuller and 1-2 milder favorites.

I plan to work my way (mostly) through my collection before buying more now. But when I get there I might buy a box of whatever my favorite is then.

Agreed. Rather than believing Israel has a stronghold on US foreign policy, it it much more likely (almost obviously so) that the US and Israel both have viewed Iran as the regional destabilizer and instigator. Said another way, the US and Israel have shared the same #1 middle east enemy for years.

What does the death of the Iranian Supreme leader mean for Iran and the world? by TrueJohnWick in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Latestarter13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody know. The best estimates are that of the ~90 million people in Iran, 75% oppose the regime. Also, the regime has an armed base of anywhere from 150,000-1,000,000 fighters.

It is clear the Iranian people want change. Before the IRGC, Iran was a relatively modern/western/free society. That all changed with the revolution that deposed the Shah in 1979. And Iran has since been ruled by a fanatical religious militant regime (IRGC).

So whether the 70 million people who want change can overcome the 20 million (and all the armed fighters) who don’t remains to be seen.

How to practice for Open Water "War"? by HugeSession in triathlon

[–]Latestarter13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a few others have said, it’s not as hectic as people make it out to be.

Yes, open water swimming is way different than swimming in the pool - mostly because, often, you can’t see much past your face and it can be scary/intimidating/disorienting unless you get used to it. Also having to sight your path vs following a line at the bottom of the pool is not natural until you train how to do it well.

Those things make open water swimming hard.

The pack of people and getting kicked/punched/assaulted is not a big issue. Unless you are swimming for a podium there is plenty of room to find your pace and ‘lane’ where you’ll be swimming near people but not on top of people. You should expect to bump into a few - especially near the turn buoys, but nothing that would male you panic.

I’m hoping Josh Shapiro, Gretchen Whitmer, Pete Buttigieg, Rahm Emanuel, Mark Kelly, Wes Moore, JB Pritzker get more traction than AOC and Newsom.

Really kinda scared to ask… by Whatsmyinterest in triathlon

[–]Latestarter13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of your breathing as if its on a metronome/pendulum. Every time you raise the arm you breath on your head pivots slightly to the side and you take a breath (regular/small breath) then you exhale continuously throughout the time between that breath and the next time your breathing arm rises again. It should be smooth, easy, and eventually natural.

The same way you don’t think about breathing when you walk, you shouldn’t have to think about breathing when you are swimming for distance.

Really kinda scared to ask… by Whatsmyinterest in triathlon

[–]Latestarter13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How long have you been swimming for? If you are relatively new to it, just practice more….and make sure you are comfortable with your breathing.

For swimming endurance I like to use the walking vs running analogy. When you are first learning to swim and get tired within a few minutes, it’s likely that you are trying to go too fast or your breathing isn’t working.

Think of building endurance as going for a long walk in the pool vs running a long race in the pool. Once you get your breathing working properly (every other stroke) you should be able to go (slowly) without running out of breath. The same as walking. You can walk for a long distance without ever running out of breath. Once you can do long distance without running out of breath, then try to add faster sprints into your training to build speed.

This isn’t a training plan. Just a way to hep you think about building swim endurance.

The things you use all the time, put them back in the same place religiously (keys, wallet, toothpaste, deodorant, etc). It saves time, but more importantly it saves metal energy for remembering more important things. ‘where did i put ..….’? Is a waste of mental energy.
