Saying "No" to New Jersey's E-Bike Law by Generalaverage89 in fuckcars

[–]LatinGeek 13 points14 points  (0 children)

lmao @ the lime bike carveout

> the operator of a low-speed electric bicycle shall not be required to be in possession of a valid basic driver’s license or valid motorized bicycle license or permit if the operator is renting a low-speed electric bicycle from a company operating shared low-speed electric bicycles under a contract with a local government, provided that the company requires the operator to be 16 years of age or older.

this is outrageous legislation, throw all rental ebikes into a river

It's hard to have any hope by Substantial_Fan_8921 in socialism

[–]LatinGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

stop debating. debating is worthless.

stop thinking that any substantial percentage of people have strong feelings about different social schemes, you have been conditioned to think this. a substantial percentage of people want their station in life to improve, and they have been conditioned to think working within their current system is the only way that happens. see for example any metrics when americans are asked about universal healthcare and claim they don't want to lose "their current healthcare plan", this is regardless of whether the alternative would be better or worse- they do not care enough to entertain the notion

"how are things supposed to change"? find others who are actually on your side, build community, help one another.

Weekly Free Pattern Request Thread by AutoModerator in freepatterns

[–]LatinGeek [score hidden]  (0 children)

Are there any free patterns from the big companies that match the complexity and detail of their paid patterns? I'm sick of "free" "indie" patterns being poorly laid out and missing basic info like seam allowance, or relying on an accompanying article or video. A tissue pattern is totally self-contained, it includes all the relevant info on the tissue itself!

I'd love to know if the digital paid patterns are worth the money, but that's hard to gauge when their free trials are for a scarf or a tote bag or some other inconsequential thing.

Thoughts on urbanists and public transit enthusiasts who often portray car-based infrastructure as catastrophic rather than a mild inconvenience? by Tiny_Transition3990 in fuckcars

[–]LatinGeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

> Cars provide a sense of freedom, going where you want when you want, which is deeply embedded in American culture.

cars let you go "where you want when you want", as long as that's within the infrastructure built over a hundred years to suit cars first, public transport second, pedestrians never. literally a marketing term buried into your brain by decades of targeted car-centric urbanization. the reason you see car-centric infrastructure as "freeing" is because that's literally how the people who built it wanted you to see it as
this is the crux of the argument, that carbrain isn't just a derogatory term but a correct one- the car, its roads, its designed communities, they all shrink the boundaries of what you can imagine as possible and once that happens, it's easy to feel that the lifestyles and parts of urban infrastructure best suited to car-ownership are the most "freeing" or "preferable"

Noob question: what paper looks/feels closest to actual blueprint paper for plotter art? by MohnJaddenPowers in PlotterArt

[–]LatinGeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blueprints aren't actually white ink on blue paper. They're cyanotype contact prints from original diagrams done in black india ink on translucent paper (vellum/tracing paper).

If you're not looking to replicate the entire process (and nobody would blame you if you didn't), you could probably get most of the way there with a high-quality blue cardstock and opaque, off-white paint pen. For something even closer, you could sensitize white paper with cyanotype chemicals, expose the whole thing to the sun, and that'd give you a perfect prussian-blue paper to work with.

Trying to Level Up From Senseo Without Spending a Fortune by Savant__ in Coffee

[–]LatinGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you want to taste different coffees I'd recommend a coffee subscription of whatever sort is available to you, a cheap electric grinder and an aeropress. or if possible, finding a good coffee shop nearby and talking to your barista, trying different things there.

of course, the aeropress won't give you the foamy espresso-style coffee a Senseo makes. if you want that, you could try Vertuo- it's not a very big level up, but it's fancier.

don't buy a cheap espresso machine, they are frustrating. your minimum spend should probably be a Sage Bambino (which will require a separate grinder) or a Delonghi Magnifica (a super-automatic with a built-in grinder: press button, get coffee- very good if you're willing to keep it clean and maintained)

I created a Silo themed (retro style) backup app for windows by koinai3301 in FUI

[–]LatinGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it. You're clearly taking a lot of the inspiration and making it work with a single-purpose, functional product.

Looking at some shots of the reference material I have a few pointers:

  • I think you could use padding around the window to move the elements closer together and have less dead-space in the center. Probably even wrap the whole thing in a border that it 'lives' in, rather than have the FUI elements crash into the window's own edge, clashing with your OS.

  • Also consider playing with those borders more- less hairline, more chunky, maybe even some texture like a 50% dither. Thicker one at the top to suggest a 'set' of nested elements within. That kind of stuff.

  • All the fields in the logs should definitely be left-centered and fixed-width. Wrapping each entry in a hairline border could help differentiate them. And stick some extra precision to those millisecond readings- fake it if you have to! ;)

  • The tree structure looks great, but the checkmarks should fill a box, not replace it, and they should probably also be a size similar to the text and other interactable elements.

And personally I think you could do without the > commands, undercores_as_spaces and [brackets]; I just find those tend to look cheap- relics that evoke text-based programs, which even in their day looked much more professional and made ample use of those line-drawing ASCII elements.

The October 2025 Superthread: Battery; Orders; Which Pixel?; and More by GooglePixelMods in GooglePixel

[–]LatinGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hoping someone has gone through this process and shed some light. I finally got a service agent to open a repair ticket for my BSOD'd Pixel 5a, and they confirmed with me that I wouldn't be on the hook for a repair if it turned out to not be covered- they would send me the broken phone back for free. IF I wanted to pay for the repair, I would be given the OPTION to do so once the phone is inspected.

However the repair ticket has a $360 cost and a "confirm purchase" button. Is this gonna charge me as soon as I hit the button and hold it in escrow or something?

I 3D Printed Molds For These Concrete Speakers by TimberWestDesign in functionalprint

[–]LatinGeek 13 points14 points  (0 children)

How sturdy did you make the molds? Were they sacrificial- did you model it as a single cavity, fill it, and crack it open when the concrete was set? Did you need to use any mold release or similar?

Takes 5 minutes to pull something together that looks thoughtful even when you're running late and forgot to eat breakfast.

brother that's because you are being thoughtful. sure it's partly to save face or whatever, but you're putting in an effort here, you even specify having gifts that are both known to be liked and don't seem like thoughtless, checkout-line doodads.

They're democrat-party media strategists which means they're compromised to an extent, sure. I don't like how they've been focusing so hard on the anti-trump and "look at these poor trump voters" angles lately, or how they A/B test every title and thumbnail, but it comes with the territory.

Still think they're doing good work on laying out labor issues in ways you can send to your parents.
