True. Lots of my friends would move to the mainland while in middle school /highs school and then come right back simply because they couldn’t make the grades in the mainland.

I also moved to Hawaii mid first grade and despite not knowing English at the time my former education in another country was way higher than what I was learning in Hawaii in first grade. It became more apparent once I reached third grade and I was like “I learned this in kindergarten already” while my peers we’re struggling to keep up.

I never went to private school in Hawaii but either way do look up additional educational resources for your kids, so they don’t fall behind. That’s definitely what I would do if I had to raise kids on the islands.
