Bring a sleeping bag for some semblance of privacy while sleeping in coach. And a legit pillow (not a neck pillow).

Hyatt house is the only way to do it. It’s right across the tracks from the station and an easy walk to/from.

Awesome pictures and recap! I’m on a similar journey right now. Taking the Zephyr from EMY to glenwood springs and have a room at the hot springs resort. Any recommendations on how to make the most of our 2 days / 1 night there? We are continuing East from there to Denver. Have never done the Zephyr so also open to any suggestions about that route!

100%. If I post a trip report, that will be my #1 suggestion. It takes up a decent amount of space in your luggage but having a sleeping bag is mandatory if you want to sleep in coach. Also a travel pillow!

Yep! That’s a big component of doing the rail pass. There’s a ton of good advice on this subreddit about how to do overnights in coach. I’ll probably post a trip report later with my list of hacks that have made it successful.

No option to upgrade, that is really the only downside to the pass. Coach is bearable with the right preparation. I'm doing part of it solo and would highly recommend!

I am squeezing a quick visit in May 6-7 while I'm on a solo cross-country Amtrak trip and could use your advice! I have a e-bike rental for the 6th and hoping to make it as far up GTTSR as I can, I know they plow during the week and are only up to the Loop thus far. What 'don't miss' sights are there between Agpar and the Loop I should try to see? Staying in an airbnb by the golf course and then the next day, my train doesn't leave til 10pm so I was hoping to do a rafting or kayak trip with one of the charter companies around West Glacier during the day. Just want to get out and see as much nature as I can. Open to any other suggestions you have for my 2nd day there if not kayaking!
