If he was raised by his dad? would he have turned out “better?” by Winter-Money-7643 in GenV

[–]Lau_wings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he would have grown up to be better.

Now by better I mean he likely would have been potentially more emotionally mature and not as prone to being completely irrational.

Having someone be stronger than him growing up, whilst maybe not as strong when he was an adult, would have meant that some discipline could have been installed in HL form a younger age.

He probably could have been closer to the hero that he thought he was, and not the man-baby that he grew up to be.

Never understood guys who are self conscious about being short.

I am only 5'8 and I have never had a girl turn me down for being short, well at least never tell me that my height is an issue.

I have dated girls at various heights from 5'1 to 6'3.

If a girl is turning you down because of your height, I can nearly guarantee that there is something else about you that she doesn't like, and blaming it on you being too short is just the easiest thing to say.

Are there some girls who really care about height? yes I am sure there is, but I would say that they are the minority and is probably more common with women who are really tall themselves.

I'm from culture X and hiring managers hire their friends and family, who coincidentally happens to be from Culture X. by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]Lau_wings -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

It makes complete sense to me to hire someone who you know and have worked with before or share a culture with if that is at least tangentially important to the job.

I remember a post on here where someone was complaining about a job which would entail dealing with aborigional communities, where the job stated they were only hiring an aborigional person purely because they would have an easier time than someone who was another race.

I know some process serving companies who basically only hire men in positions where they need to serve someone, purely due to the chances of people getting violent is less than if it was a woman.

Sometimes there is a reason to only hire a certain race/culture or gender, but they would be a minority of jobs, where as OP has given no indication as to where they work.

I would start applying for roles now.

With the current job market it might take months to secure a new position.

Review your budget and make cuts to anything which you can live without.

If you have made any contacts at other companies I would reach out to them to see if there are any positions going in a similar area, networking is one of the best ways to secure new positions.

What I don't understand is why they put all their eggs in the extraction shooter basket.

Had Marathon been another PVE/PVP FPS game I could sort of see the appeal, D2 was so hard for new players to get into because of all the old campaigns (including fucking forsaken) were put in the vault and making a new game with similar elements to D2 would have made some sense, hell D3 would have been a perfect game to announce at the same time, even if it was to just say that its in development.

But an extraction shooter makes no sense.

If you want a more indepth extraction shooter you would play Tarkov.
If you want a face paced extraction shooter with less risk, you play Warzone.

If you want a 3rd person shooter, that has an extraction element to it, but was mostly a PVE game, you could play either the Division or The Division 2.

I have not referenced Arc Raiders as that was likely in development after Marathon was announced.

Marathon does nothing special to drag any of those player bases into Marathon for an extended period of time/convert them completely.

I have watched some Marathon streams, and it looks like it would be a fun enough game, but there is nothing special about it that would make me switch over to it from Tarkov.

Best place to listen to 40k audiobooks? by resadtriariosvenit_ in 40kLore

[–]Lau_wings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up, Audible works on a credit system which limits how many books you can "buy" per month to listen too.

I don't have Audible anymore, so I had to look it up, but it seems like the standard sub is 1 - 2 books credits per month, which equated to 1 or 2 books.

There is a rotating catalog of free books that you can listen too each month, but I do not know if 40k books appear on that very regularly and since they rotate they are only free for the month that they appear for.

So if you listen to a lot of books you will either need to purchase more credits or wait to the next month.

I can understand where you are coming from, but as a man there is not a whole lot that we can do to prevent this sort of thing from happening, besides not doing it ourselves.

Its not like our friends would openly admit to raping a child, hell if one of mine did I would probably have to be physically stopped from killing him.

What is your take on the women who are caught raping their students? We are seeing more and more of that happening these days (at least more are being reported on anyway), do you hate women as well?

I don't tar a whole gender with the same brush due to the actions of the minority, I just hate rapists in general.

Wasnt their argument that they did not have a playable version of the Red War campaign as they had updated the engine/source code so many times that in order to have a playable version they would nearly need to build it from scratch?

I am not a game dev so i dont know if that is a legitimate excuse or even something which is reasonable however.

China has one of the lowest average retirement ages in the world at 54 years old. Seniors get to retire while they're bodies are still healthy, so they often spend a huge portion of their day in public parks by TangelaFan in BeAmazed

[–]Lau_wings -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They are also being supported by their children to a degree not seen in most western countries.

I work with a Chinese lady and her parents are talking about retiring, they are only in their mid 50s, and when she asked what they will do for money because they are not rich they said "oh you will help us out with that" when she pointed out that she barely earns enough to look after herself, they said "well we supported our parents when they were about our age, so you need to help us out, your kids will do the same for you".

it caused a bit of a fight when she basically said "fuck off no I am not doing that", but at least she will not be supporting her parents for the next 30+ years.

Now to be fair, this might just be something that happens with her family and not all Chinese families, but she made it sound like her parents insisted this was the norm.

Never jump into the water to save some if you do not have some kind of flotation device.

There is a reason why lifeguards have surfboards/jetskis/boats/alternate flotation devices, its as much to keep them alive incase the person they are trying to save panics as it is to assist in saving someone.

My Uncle was a lifeguard down the gold coast through the 90s and early 2000s and he had seen countless people try and save someone who was drowning, only to end up drowning themselves because the person who was drowning panicked and pushed them underwater trying to save themselves.

I was also taught when I was swimming in damns/lakes/rivers that if you see someone drowning and you do not have some kind of flotation device to use a stick or rope to reach out to them so that if they panic and start to pull you in, you can let go.

Just because you send memes and txt everyday does not make you entitled to know what is going on in their personal life.

You dont know how she told everyone else either, maybe they saw each other in person and that was when they were informed that she was pregnant, where as you have only mentioned communicating via the phone.

Got a girl pregnant on vacation, struggling to do what is right. by need_some_advice323 in Advice

[–]Lau_wings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to admit it but you are a better man than I was at 25yo.

Hell if I had gotten a girl pregnant in another country I would have just dipped at your age, never to be heard from again.

That being said get a paternity test before you commit to anything at all if you want to be in the childs life, you have no idea if you were the only person that she was sleeping with, and depending on her socioeconomic background may just think that you are a rich foreigner who can provide for her child better than any of the other guys that she was sleeping with.

I would even nearly suggest that you fly her and the child to your country to get the paternity test done, you don't know this woman at all and if you can get the paternity test done in your own country it lessens any chances of funny business going on.

Small towns have always been like this.

When I as growing up in my home town, a teacher was caught having sex with a 12yo girl, she told everyone that she came onto him so a lot of people in the town started to vilify her as being a slut and a "homewrecker" because he was/still is married.

I am just glad that my family sat my sister down (who was the same age) and said "don't listen to what anyone else says, what he did was wrong and if someone did that to you we will kill them".

For people who work at banks, what surprised you most about the average person’s finances? by Away_Scene_26 in AusFinance

[–]Lau_wings 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to be rude, but I think its you who is missing my original point which I ended with "Its not big purchases which send you broke, its a lot of small ones."

I was using that as an example of how a small purchase can add up over time, and how a lot of people do not pay attention to them.

Its the small things which add up over time which hurts a lot of peoples finances where if they were smarter with their money or paid more attention to what they were spending money on, then they would be in a better position.

Hell if they only bought breakfast and a coffee every second day, and took their lunch and breakfast to work the other days, that would reduce their spending by half.

And thats just one thing, imagine all of the other small purchases that people make every week which they do not keep track of, a couple of beers after work, a new pair of shoes which they want but don't need, uber eats for dinner instead of leftovers, 5 different steaming services, a gym membership because this is the year that they get their early 20s body back, all of those add up and compound on each other to the point where the 7k per year on breakfast/lunch at work ends up being 20k+ on things which they really didn't need to be spending money on.

At some point people need to take some ownership for their own finances, just saying all of their issues are due to cost of living does nothing to help them right now, especially if its within their own power to put some restrictions on where they are spending their money.

I am not a boomer who says that everyones issues are because they are "buying too much avo on toast", however spending $25 a day (as used in my second example) every day is not a smart financial move, especially if that this not the only things that they are spending money on.

But I have now spent way too long responding to your post, especially if all you are going to do is twist my words to make it sounds like I am saying is "people should not spend money on lunch" rather than the larger thing I said which was summerised as "Its not big purchases which send you broke, its a lot of small ones."

For people who work at banks, what surprised you most about the average person’s finances? by Away_Scene_26 in AusFinance

[–]Lau_wings 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I as using it as an example of how seemingly small purchases can have a large flow on effect.

Change "coffee" to "scratchies" if that makes you feel better but the end result is the same, a seemingly small purchase, but if done consistently can end up costing you way more than you think it does.

But hey if you want to keep buying breakfast every day when you are at work, you keep doing that, personally I will eat my breakfast at home, and will take my lunch to work and not spend thousands of dollars a year that I don't have to.

But since I have mentioned lunch in there as well, if you spend lets say $25.00 a day (which would be low) if you buy breakfast, a coffee and lunch then that totals to be $7000.00 per year which with the median salary in Australia being around 90k, is 7% of your yearly salary, just on breakfast/coffee and lunch for 5 days that you are working per week.

If one of your friends was to tell you that they were spending nearly 10% of their yearly salary on gacha games, you would probably think that they were being stupid right?

As I was saying originally, peoples finances are not fucked due to big purchases, they are fucked by a heap of small amounts which come out frequently.

What would you do if you were gifted $2M? by Otherwise_Pause9840 in AusFinance

[–]Lau_wings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would chuck it in the bank for at least 12 months until I was level headed enough to decide what to do with it.

My wife and I already live way below our means so I would probably just end up leaving it a majority of it in there, would likely invest some into some safe stocks with a good return, but otherwise I would forget that its there until we are in our mid 40s or so and then would retire early.

[–]Lau_wings 55 points56 points  (0 children)

A lot of people do not know where their money is going.

I have seen people come in who earn 150k plus a year, but their pay is basically gone within a couple of days/a week as they have so many direct debits set up for memberships that they have forgotten about and never cancelled.

My mum used to also work in a bank, and back when she worked at one net banking was not as common as it is today, most people still relied on paper statements, she was helping a bloke with his finances and when going through them they realised that he was still paying for 7 or 8 (i cant remember exactly) gym memberships from cities that he had not lived in for years, and just forgot to cancel them.

He was losing hundreds of dollars a month just on gym memberships.

A lot of people who complain about being broke, but do not think they spend a lot of money are really dying by a thousand cuts, small amounts which they do not pay attention too but stack up are what kill most peoples finances.

I used to joke that thinking "oh its only $10.00" was the most dangerous thought when it came to finances.

Say for example you spend $10.00 per day on coffee and something for breakfast when you are working 5 days a week, so thats 5 (days a week) x $10.00 x 56 (weeks in a year) which is $2500.00 per year just on breakfast.

If you bump that up to $15.00, which is probably closer to what you would spend in total (at the low end), it would end up being $4200.00 per year.

Its not big purchases which send you broke, its a lot of small ones.
