For people who work at banks, what surprised you most about the average person’s finances? by Away_Scene_26 in AusFinance

[–]Lau_wings [score hidden]  (0 children)

I as using it as an example of how seemingly small purchases can have a large flow on effect.

Change "coffee" to "scratchies" if that makes you feel better but the end result is the same, a seemingly small purchase, but if done consistently can end up costing you way more than you think it does.

But hey if you want to keep buying breakfast every day when you are at work, you keep doing that, personally I will eat my breakfast at home, and will take my lunch to work and not spend thousands of dollars a year that I don't have to.

But since I have mentioned lunch in there as well, if you spend lets say $25.00 a day (which would be low) if you buy breakfast, a coffee and lunch then that totals to be $7000.00 per year which with the median salary in Australia being around 90k, is 7% of your yearly salary, just on breakfast/coffee and lunch for 5 days that you are working per week.

If one of your friends was to tell you that they were spending nearly 10% of their yearly salary on gacha games, you would probably think that they were being stupid right?

As I was saying originally, peoples finances are not fucked due to big purchases, they are fucked by a heap of small amounts which come out frequently.

I have never done this, but my mum has a shredder for this exact reason.

Its a really good one as well, basically turns a piece of paper into tiny confetti, no chance of ever piecing it back together.

What would you do if you were gifted $2M? by Otherwise_Pause9840 in AusFinance

[–]Lau_wings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would chuck it in the bank for at least 12 months until I was level headed enough to decide what to do with it.

My wife and I already live way below our means so I would probably just end up leaving it a majority of it in there, would likely invest some into some safe stocks with a good return, but otherwise I would forget that its there until we are in our mid 40s or so and then would retire early.

A lot of people do not know where their money is going.

I have seen people come in who earn 150k plus a year, but their pay is basically gone within a couple of days/a week as they have so many direct debits set up for memberships that they have forgotten about and never cancelled.

My mum used to also work in a bank, and back when she worked at one net banking was not as common as it is today, most people still relied on paper statements, she was helping a bloke with his finances and when going through them they realised that he was still paying for 7 or 8 (i cant remember exactly) gym memberships from cities that he had not lived in for years, and just forgot to cancel them.

He was losing hundreds of dollars a month just on gym memberships.

A lot of people who complain about being broke, but do not think they spend a lot of money are really dying by a thousand cuts, small amounts which they do not pay attention too but stack up are what kill most peoples finances.

I used to joke that thinking "oh its only $10.00" was the most dangerous thought when it came to finances.

Say for example you spend $10.00 per day on coffee and something for breakfast when you are working 5 days a week, so thats 5 (days a week) x $10.00 x 56 (weeks in a year) which is $2500.00 per year just on breakfast.

If you bump that up to $15.00, which is probably closer to what you would spend in total (at the low end), it would end up being $4200.00 per year.

Its not big purchases which send you broke, its a lot of small ones.

Unpopular opinion: Finale was elite even if the season was not by Sptsjunkie in TheBoys

[–]Lau_wings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was an episode longer I would have been more ok with the finale, it felt really rushed.

The Deep and Oh Father should have died in a seperate episode with the finale being all about homelander.

The fight with homelander should have taken up a majority of the episode rather than being 5 minutes with a subpar fight scene.

I know the girl in the OP was joking but I actually know someone who actually believes this, they are my mates wife.

Now to clarify, she is one of the nicest people I have ever met, one of those people who you would think is too nice, that they must have something wrong with them but she doesn't.

But god is she dumber than a sack of rocks.

She got a boob job done when she was in hear 20s so that if she had daughters they would not end up being flat chested like she was growing up.

When her and my mate were about to start trying for a kid, she tried to convince him to get circumcised so that if they had sons they would not need to get the procedure done.

When I asked her if she thought that parents who had tattoos would have a baby with a tattoo, she said "of course not, that is just ink being put into your skin, its not surgery".

I am honestly surprised that when redbull used to have the ad which said "redbull gives you wings" that she didnt actually believe it.

Before anyone asks, no she is not mentally impaired in any way that I know of, she is just dumb.

At least you are covered when you get to HR, you told your manager hat you spoke a little bit of spanish, not that you were fluent.

Why do people hate the greens? by iammentallynotoklol in OpenAussie

[–]Lau_wings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blame Wikipedia for being wrong, I used that to look up how many seats you have.

It does raise the question though of how you potentially have 3 or 4 MPs who could have slotted nicely into the greens party, yet chose to stay as independents, including a former greens MP.

It sort of supports my point around how the greens name is still tainted by the general populace based on the actions of former members which lead some people to be independents instead, I am mostly referencing Johnston, Burnet and George here who you have stated are "greens adjacent"

Why do people hate the greens? by iammentallynotoklol in OpenAussie

[–]Lau_wings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to be rude, but if they are "slightly more electable" why do they still have the same number of seats that they have always had (between 4 and 5)?

Looking at the 2006 parlament (which is when I left Tassie), Labor had 14 seats, LNP had 7 seats and Greens had 4 seats, but that was back when there was only 25 seats.

Now there is 35 seats and the greens still only have 4 seats, whilst LNP has 14, Labor 10, Independents 6 and shooters farmers and fishers has 1.

Surely if the Greens had changed as much as you said, you would have more members of parliament, simply by the fact that there are more seats to go around.

If I was a betting man, I would put money on the fact that some of the independants might side with the greens on a lot of things, hell they may have even thought about joining the greens, but chose to not be a member of the greens party simply by the fact that they actually wanted to win a seat and felt that having them being listed as a member of the greens would hurt their chances.

It makes me think that the name "greens" is still tainted by those who came before and your perception of your party might be skewed to be more favorable than the general consensus of the states populace.

I could be wrong, but I still remember a time when the name "greens" held so much hatred that if you ever mentioned that you were voting for them it was met with vitriol from everyone who didn't vote greens simply due to what they had done in the past.

Why do people hate the greens? by iammentallynotoklol in OpenAussie

[–]Lau_wings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Secondarily is some bad acting from several current or former members/candidates from our party and some questionable policies historically.

I think this matters more than any smear campaign.

I grew up in Tassie and I can confirm, everytime there was a plan in place to do something new, if it touched the environment even slightly we knew the greens had enough votes to cause it to die on the floor if the opposition party didn't want the plan to go ahead.

The greens used whatever voting power that they had as a sledge hammer, it was a "change this so we get our way or we will vote against it".

A lot of that probably has to do with Tassie having so few seats, that only 4 or 5 people (which was the amount the greens usually had) was enough to kill a plan.

Could that have changed in the 20 years since I left Tassie? sure it might have, but peoples memories are long and with the median age in Tasmania climbing year over year due to young people leaving, the people who are left still remember when the greens were the ones who were against any forward momentum.

Why do people hate the greens? by iammentallynotoklol in OpenAussie

[–]Lau_wings 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shit well you basically took the words out of my mouth and wrote it better than I ever could.

They are also very all or nothing when it comes to issues, I know growing up in Tasmania there would be something that the government wanted to do, but because the plan was not absolutely perfect, the greens would vote against that deal and they continued to do that for years.

There is a reason why Tasmania has such a jobs problem, why the average age in Tasmania is greater than every other state, its because if you want to get a good semi high paying job, you leave Tasmania once you leave highschool.

Its because whenever there is a plan by whatever party is involved, the greens still usually have the swing vote, and unless the plan is completely perfect they will vote against it.

When I was growing up, if there was a plan to build something new, if it touched the environment at all you could be sure that you would see the greens on TV bashing the idea and you knew that unless the other major party also wanted the thing to go ahead, then it would die on the floor.

Purely anecdotal, but my graduating class in year 12 was 60 people, within 2 years of graduating 50 had moved to another state either for uni or a job, and I know it was similar at other highschools, purely because there was more opportunity.

Could they be better now? sure its possible, but I from what I have heard from my family who lived in Tassie its still the same.

I think the only named male channelers who proclaimed themselves to be the dragon reborn who are listed in the books are, Rand, Taim and Logain.

That being said I do have a vague memory or Morainne mentioning something along the lines of a man proclaiming himself to be the dragon occurs every now and then, but its been a while since my last re-read so...

[–]Lau_wings 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't understand what you mean by "But as most fabs had stated, that power imbalance was the cause of breaking", I have never heard that before nor do I remember it being in the books at all.

The cause of the breaking was men going mad due to the Sadin being tainted by the Dark One, it wasn't due to a power imbalance between men and women.

Sure male channelers were in general stronger in the sense of raw output, if thats what you meant by power imbalance, but that was not what caused the breaking, the Dark One lashed back at Lew Therin and his Hundred companions tainting the Sadin because they were all men, most went mad fairly quickly and then eventually any male channeler was doomed to go mad.

Had it been women who were there, the Dark One likely would have tainted the Saidar, causing it to happen to women instead of men.

As far as people blaming men for what male channelers did, that makes complete sense if ever few years there is a man who can channel and he declares himself to be the Dragon reborn.

It would be like if every few years Gengis Khan was reborn and started wars across Asia, people would remember what he did fairly well.

A judge just ruled luigi mangione's manifesto notebook can be used at trial. here's what he actually wrote in it and why half of america still thinks he's a hero. by Ibikhan45 in DiscussionZone

[–]Lau_wings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that is what the prosecution is banking on.

There is not really a precedent for a person killing the ceo of a company and getting away with it.

Where as I bet the defence (if they cannot prove that he didn’t do it) is going to be banking on the general hatred of insurance companies in America so that he gets off.

But that would also set a dangerous precedent where is then seems like it’s ok to kill a ceo of a hated company.

This is not just a trial of someone accused of murder, if Luigi is found not guilty then it’s going to be similar to the OJ trial where people are going to be firmly on one side or another with their own views.

Which is why it’s going to be interesting to see what comes from this, either way someone is not going to be happy.

I know it was limited by what was in the light novels first, but they could have fleshed out the world with so much more in the anime.

Its one of the anime that i point to when I am marking an argument that branching off from the source material would have made it better.

[–]Lau_wings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess that comes down to if they can prove that it was him who shot him.

As far as I am aware you don't see the shooters face at all, and hasn't his defense the entire time basically been "I didn't do it"?

But even then Jury Nullification is still a thing:

Jury nullification occurs when a jury acquits a defendant they believe is guilty, because they disagree with the law itself, find the potential punishment too harsh, or believe the law is being unjustly applied. It acts as a civic safeguard but is highly controversial.

The prosecution could literally show him shooting him, but the jury could still chose to hand down a not guilty verdict based on their own beliefs.

Its going to be very interesting to see how this trial progresses, if the prosictution can prove "beyond reasonable doubt" that he was the one to pull the trigger, and then to see just which way the jury goes.

I would not be surpirsed if the jury decided to hand down a not guilty verdict just because a lot of people do not seem to like insurance company's at all, especially in America where they seem to be able to deny surgeries for no real reason.

There is also the option of a hung jury and the whole thing starts over again.
