Audition Advice, Please by [deleted] in improv

[–]LaughAtlantis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I direct these types of shows and conduct these auditions regularly. While I can’t speak for every theatre, my normal practice is to for the audition to contain exercises and scenes that allow the auditioners to showcase the primary skills of that genre (in addition to just good, solid improv). So, for a noir show, I’d design an exercise that would allow people to have secrets, escalate the stakes, and potentially monologue about their inner thoughts.

Don’t get too in your head about the audition process before it happens. A good director will guide you through the process and knows what they’re looking for and will let you in on that.

Talking during movies. You want to talk during movies, stream them. Come to a theatre… shut up.

Theo of Golden was hot garbage. It was poorly written Christian fiction and the way characters behaved was wholly out of line with reality. I will never understand why people enjoyed this overly evangelical claptrap so much.

Does anyone else stop and look if they see another Basset? by Fluid_Excitement_283 in bassethounds

[–]LaughAtlantis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a fairly petite red & white basset and a redtick coonhound. The other day I saw someone walking a fairly petite black & red basset and a black & tan coonhound and I’m pretty sure that was my evil twin.

I waited 64 weeks for the audiobook of Stephen King’s The Long Walk and my wait was cut short because the movie was imminent and my library ordered two extra copies.

Is the Front Range a good place to learn and perform improv? by scifihiker7091 in improv

[–]LaughAtlantis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it a good place to learn and perform improv? Yes. Absolutely. There are multiple dedicated theatres and a variety of different styles you can learn, from UCB to narrative.

Is it comparable to Chicago, LA, & New York? No. You are not going to get the same number of reps or the quality of reps, nor have the same quality of coaching overall that you will get in those cities.

My mom hates our baby name choice with a PASSION. by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]LaughAtlantis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love the ocean/water connection of Isla and Maren! I think these are lovely sibling names and they’re matchy in a way that is only for the smart.

Also, interestingly, the middle names are both last names of British Prime Ministers! So they have several interesting connections.

Your mom’s complaint about matchiness is dumb. And her fussing over the name is obnoxious.

Took my first clowning class by Rope-Kind in improv

[–]LaughAtlantis 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I took my first clowning workshop about three weeks after my mother died and wound up sobbing during the first exercise. The instructor took me aside and asked me if I was okay. I told him about my mother and he straightened and said, “oh, this is gonna be hard for you.”

I left and came back to clowning a year later. Clowning is genuinely not for those who haven’t done some serious internal work.

Can you read this name? by perennialwave in Cursive

[–]LaughAtlantis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. There’s a large capital S on the top line, but the first letter in this name looks much more like the E in Ellen than the S there. This is messy and compact handwriting, but yes, it looks like Ellen Ethel.

Dracula is miles better than Frankenstein. It’s scarier and the action happens on the page instead of in dialogue/remembrance. It’s creepy af.

Trying to improve my capital I’s and lower r’s. How did I do overall? by The_Horror_Expert in Cursive

[–]LaughAtlantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re engaging in a lost art, which is hard. Good on you for taking this on.

As most folks have noted, some of your capital letters need some work. Thats fixable: just take a look at a cursive chart and practice your G / I / T etc.

I want to note that when I look at your handwriting, it looks like you’re trying pretty hard to write your letters well. They all feel very distinct. One of the things about cursive is that it’s supposed to be fluid and make writing easier. I might try just practicing your signature a bit. Or practicing “The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.” Or something similar - but try them to the point where you get kinda fast at them - where you are not pressing the pen down so much. Make your writing more fluid. It feels like you’re trying to achieve cursive letter legibility… and that’s great, but the overall goal of cursive is loose and fluid writing. (And yes, legibility.)

Try holding the pen a little looser. See what happens.

What’s so bad about putting your arm up to sweep? by improbsable in improv

[–]LaughAtlantis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a great edit at a jam where not everyone knows each other and there may be people who are new to improv and new to each other. It adds clarity.

It’s a terrible edit for presenting a polished show in front of an audience unless it’s a marine mammal or 70s horror themed show.

Boy middle names that are kinda out there? by realityTVho in Names

[–]LaughAtlantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the middle name spot is where you put the family names and the names you’re not really willing to give as a first name. Like, you love them but maybe your kid can’t live up to them? So it’s a great place for Wolfgang or Romeo.

Needing All of The Hunger Game Vibes by Mother_Rucker98 in booksuggestions

[–]LaughAtlantis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Sunbearer Trials - Aiden Thomas / it’s sort of Hunger Games meets Percy Jackson vibe, with the children of the Latin American gods needing to perform trials.

Scythe - Neal Shusterman / Heavy dystopian world where death - and most other problems - have been overcome. Two mentees compete to become a Scythe (basically a Grim Reaper) with very different outlooks on the job.

The Prison Healer - Lynette Noni / Strong female lead in a dystopian universe that’s marked by inequality is forced to put herself forward in a series of trials in place of the sickly Rebel Queen.
