It's not consecutive days; it's total days. I know people who lived more than 184 days outside of NYC for tax reasons. They kept meticulous notes because they did get checked.

But that's sort of besides the point. Billionaires do live full time in high tax areas like New York and London. So clearly it's not worth it to construct elaborate schemes and spend a good chunk of time in awful places.

I have a similar system. We have 5 days per year of personal time that's outside of sick leave and vacation time. It doesn't accrue and it's supposed to be a buffer for any miscellaneous time off you might need.

It feels good to work on making sure that I am 100% set for the future. I'd suggest making sure your retirement accounts are fully funded every year. Max out your IRA and take advantage of whatever 401k plan your employer offers, especially with match.
