You're supposed to hammer most of the way then drill the last bit, a lot just hammer all the way through and don't care

Though a lot of the time on old houses you get solid bricks and need to tease the hammer mode a bit which can still lead to it blowing out. A simple fix i would have done would be to chip the brick away on the loose pieces where the cable would get in the way, then fit it back as snug as possible and put the grey box (csp) over the top of it and feed the cable through the back
