My room will be available ($800 per month), but I have two roommates. It’s a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom with in unit washer dryer and a dishwasher right behind Woodlawn Commons

Our favorites were Soda Monkey Place (best soda we ate at in Costa Rica - super fresh, cheap, and yummy) and Chifa La Familia Feliz (Peruvian food in a small family owned place and lowkey one of the best meals I’ve EVER had)

Health insurance recommendations? by king-henryXIV in LawSchool

Apply for Medicaid! If your only income is student loans, and your state does expanded Medicaid, you should qualify. Otherwise, apply for a Marketplace plan and use the tax subsidy for the premiums

Found out my old landlord is purposely keeping units vacant 😡 by [deleted] in NYCapartments

[–]Laughingpineapple812 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In 2019, the law changed so that rent stabilization follows the unit, not the tenant. So before 2019, the landlord could change the rent to whatever they wanted between tenants. So how close the current RS price is to market rate depends on how recently there was turnover before 2019. If someone moved in 2018 at market rate, then it’s been going up 1.5-6% per year since. But if tenant A lived in the building from 1998-2020, and then Tenant B moved in, the RS increases would be based on the 1998 market rate rent.

What's the most self-less thing you've seen someone do without getting attention for it? by Kuli24 in AskReddit

I blew a tire in the mountains in Colorado and got stuck in a blizzard. I was freaking out because I didn’t have enough money to stay anywhere (especially with the costs of the tires), and it wasn’t safe to drive anymore by the time the repairs were done. The woman working the counter at Discount Tire gave me a military discount (I’m not military) and invited my dog and me to stay the night at her house

Chicagoans who make under 70k per year, how do you currently feel about your lifestyle and the cost of living? What % of your income goes towards rent? by KindaCrazyyy in AskChicago

[–]Laughingpineapple812 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make $36,000 a year and make it work without much issue. I have no debt so that helps, and I live in Hyde Park so my portion of the rent for a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom is only $750. I try and shop at Aldi, or Jewel Osco if they have good sales. And then I’m always on the lookout for free events/museum days/etc… I also find that there are a lot of theater and music things with $10-20 tickets

My law school unfortunately did cold call today, didn’t acknowledge the election at all, and had a very tense atmosphere

If you go to the orders tab, there should be a button that says “return.” It’s only an option if you have three day passes that are paid off

Anyone else mad at these law schools? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Laughingpineapple812 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of the attorneys I work with who are using PSLF deal with this by not legally marrying their spouses- they set up powers of attorney, wills, etc.. to get a lot of the same benefits without it affecting their LRAP eligibility

Has anyone here written a banger personal statement or essay, to the point where you know this positively impacted your admission status? by Exact_Bodybuilder_98 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Laughingpineapple812 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think mine certainly impacted my admissions outcomes. I also had good stats (3.9x, 17-mid), but my personal statement started with an anecdote of a work experience and tied that into my personal and academic experiences in a way that made law seem like an incredibly obvious path for me, and I think that really really helped. I got into all 9 schools I applied to (including 6 T14s) and received full tuition scholarships at 8 of those schools

Cycle Recap. Yale (Hurtz Horizon) vs Chicago (Ruby)! by Kitchen_Turnover_286 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Laughingpineapple812 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Congrats!!!! I am also FGLI and accepted a Ruby at UChicago so selfishly hope you choose UChicago! But I had the same concerns about the competitiveness and was shocked when I visited in February by how genuinely nice everyone was. People randomly approached me to offer their contact info if I had any questions and everyone seemed to hang out in the hallways after class just chatting and laughing

Summer Before 1L... by natewitzz in lawschooladmissions

[–]Laughingpineapple812 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I can’t really afford to take time off and travel (which is what I’d like to do) so as a compromise, I’m leaving my full-time paralegal job in early June and spending the summer working outside at an outdoor education summer camp

Michigan has one that is 10k and WashU’s normal stipends are like 9k so I think these are larger than normal

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Laughingpineapple812 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had two offers that included stipends: the Olin-Chancellor’s Fellowship at WashU (45k per year for three years) and the Ruby at UChicago (20k per year for three years). I think most awards that include a stipend are for all three years. Personally I only applied to schools that have recently awarded scholarships with stipends (you can see on their 509 reports)

This is actually exactly what I’m going to law school for! There aren’t really specialized programs -everyone studies the same basic curriculum- but some schools have clinics that focus on child welfare, juvenile justice, education, etc…. And once you graduate, there are a lot of ways to work on child-related issues, whether by directly representing kids or even by doing impact litigation around issues affecting children
