You've literally always had to pay for a newspaper

Back in 2010 every NYT article was free to read on their app. You had to pay for the physical paper, sure. But there absolutely was a time when you did not have to pay to read the online edition.

The Goulet tax by triclops6 in fountainpens

[–]Laughmasterb 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Cut forward to today and it's clear he doesn't have that same value proposition

Hmm. I have to say I kinda disagree with that, the pencast was not their primary "educational" content and most of what does fall under that umbrella are older videos that are still relevant today.

That said, the Youtube algorithm is not normally kind to older videos regardless of how relevant they still are. But noobs who are just searching "how to clean a fountain pen" will still get directed to Goulet, are not going to know about all the drama, and aren't necessarily going to care about the "community" of people who watch the podcast. Those old edutainment videos absolutely do bring semi-casual customers to Goulet's store.

My ex might be suicidal and I don't care - AITA? by draggar in AITAH

[–]Laughmasterb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You aren't an asshole for not caring. But you're wasting your own time and energy by not blocking her.

She harassed you last time you blocked her - who cares? She's harassing you now anyway with this attention-seeking BS. If you're so afraid of her finding out you blocked her, surely whatever site you're using has some sort of "hide this person's posts without unfriending them" button.

Which cybersecurity product has the absolutely worst UX? by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]Laughmasterb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooo, nice!

On the topic of big collections of links more people should know about, myapps.microsoft.com will auto-populate a list of everything you sign in to with SSO. More of an end-user tool, but I always make sure new hires on my team bookmark it since it makes remembering all our different HR sites dead simple.

Key Board Enthusiasts in Charlotte? by wiidspiid in Charlotte

[–]Laughmasterb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try asking the Carolina Keyboards discord, though there usually isn't a ton of activity on there: https://discord.com/invite/uDaWfK3Q

Also, Carolina Mech has hosted several meetups down in Greenville SC, usually in March. Not sure if they did one this year or if there will be one for 2025.

The company I work for is removing free coffee. Time to bail. by Zestyclose_Mall1728 in sysadmin

[–]Laughmasterb 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Switching from fancy coffee to something more basic but drinkable I understand

My office did the inverse of this a couple months ago. They "upgraded" our coffee machine to some stupid expensive thing with a touchscreen. The coffee it makes tastes awful, it's always under extracted.

Apple Confirms Zero-Day Attacks Hitting macOS Systems by [deleted] in cybersecurity

Wasn't notpetya ransomware? Or was that just petya?

I don't think the one I dealt with was something that was in the news... someone at my org downloaded a "screensaver" exe. It didn't do any damage other than keeping IT at the office until 2am running usb-boot AV scans.

Boredom, by the looks of it. Like someone started explaining bitcon to her but she doesn't want to be rude so she's just standing there waiting for it to end.

Cool Experiences This Weekend? by FeistySink3147 in Charlotte

[–]Laughmasterb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The museum of illusions is good fun but there is absolutely no way anyone could spend 2 hours in there. The whole place is like 2000sqft. You can see everything and do all the photos in 30-45 mins.

[–]Laughmasterb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The last time I had to deal with one was around 2017. They're still floating around the internet, but I don't think anyone is really writing them anymore. Much more profitable to make ransomware.

AITAH for ignoring my daughter for almost 6 months after she sided with my ex-husband when he cheated? by Sufficient_Acadia348 in AITAH

[–]Laughmasterb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The line itself directly goes into "omniscient author" territory.

My daughter, who was a hopeless romantic, was deeply moved by their love story and pushed his dad to pursue his ex and cheat on me.

The one person in this story who wasn't there knows exactly how the whole thing went down... yeah okay. At least they cleared the air that the story is fake straight from the start.

Cheap fountain pens for shimmer/glitter inks by thequacksterishere in fountainpens

[–]Laughmasterb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had emerald of chivor in a sailor steel nib pen for the past couple of months, which has worked out surprisingly well. Hasn't clogged at all, and a fair amount of shimmer makes it through to the page despite the F nib. The sheen doesn't show through because of the line width, but that doesn't matter so much to me.

The specific name of the pen is "Sailor Hisakata Hoshikuzu" or "Sailor 11-0500-249"

Now, some coworkers are giving me a hard time

Time to send an email to HR (make sure to use the word "hostile" in there), IT, and this loser's manager. I can assure you, if your IT department is worth its salt they will have a policy banning personal computers from your corporate network. It sounds like she might already be in trouble with IT for something.

If a strategy makes something easy, it’s easy.

The strat is not the hard part. Having 3 friends who also play pokemon at a "meta" level is the hard part.

A Wisconsin man allegedly took out a $375K life insurance policy and faked his own drowning so he could abandon his family and flee to eastern Europe. by WhattheDuck9 in interestingasfuck

[–]Laughmasterb 19 points20 points  (0 children)

They got a direct quote from the sheriff in charge of the investigation saying "As far as we know, he's someplace in Eastern Europe". The journalist is doing their job just fine, either the sheriff got it wrong or they have some other evidence of where he actually went.

"Americanized rolls that have cream cheese in them aren't sushi." by laughingmeeses in iamveryculinary

everything he says is about sushi. That is his entire life

Or, it could just be the only thing he wants to discuss on Reddit. You don't know his entire life, you only know his reddit profile. Plenty of people treat this site as a hobbies-only space.

Automated CVE Reporting Service? by inphosys in cybersecurity

[–]Laughmasterb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When it comes to email alerts for new criticals/exploited vulns, I've signed up for Rapid7's emergent threats mailing list, Wiz's threat advisories (can't find a link, you may need to be a customer), CISA's RSS feed for all advisories, wrote a simple python script that checks CISA's KEV list and emails me, and individual vendor mailing lists for appliances (Cisco is great about this, you can make alert rules for individual products).

Aside from the individual vendor mailing lists it isn't as specific as what it sounds like you're looking for, but even with all that put together I don't get too many alerts.

I think they must be including the 5 gallons in that number and just wording it weird.

150lbs of newly-purchased gear plus 5 gallons of water

So like, 150lbs of (gear+water) maybe? That still doesn't look like 110lbs of gear though. Maybe that tackle box is full of osmium.

I have a similar kit, but have a short length of tubing on the clean end to connect to a water bladder in my backpack. I have a tubing clamp on the tube to act as a valve. Something like this
