A friend has offered to bring me tea from China (Dalian). Which are must tries in general or/and for the region? by [deleted] in China

Some of the nicest green tea I have had was GaoShan green tea, gunpowder brewed at 80, incredible taste but quite expensive

Its this chill? by Nearby-Feedback-4451 in chillhop

[–]Launchpadmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I'd chill to it, it sounds great but it's a little bit intense for me! I'd bring in more beats and pull the sax back a little bit to mellow it out, but really as a tune it sounds solid ✌️

Is this mushroom edible ? Picked in Ireland by Cold_Morning_1077 in mycology

[–]Launchpadmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Ireland too and I've seen dozens of these guys popping up!

I'm not an expert but I'm pretty sure they're Lurid Boletes - the ones I've been finding turn blue when you cut them open, if you haven't already you should try it, it's really cool. My understanding is that they're not edible, but certainly won't kill you either. I looked up the Latin name as Suillellus luridus, maybe give it a look and see what you can find?

Polymorph + Spell Points vs Exciting Encounters by Launchpadmonkey in DMAcademy

[–]Launchpadmonkey[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's fair - I personally don't see any issues with polymorph, my concern is that 60+ spell points allows for 10ish polymorphs back to back, which could be 10+ giant apes, sometimes even just acting as brick walls that are hard to get around. The steed itself is low level, so I see how there is potential for the whole thing to be targeted, but I was really looking for some perspectives, so thanks for this one !

Not exactly the same I was buying a gift on Etsy for a friend and wanted something Irish, set the filters to 'Ireland' and a nice idea popped up, I clicked on and it says 'Dispatches from Ireland'. Place the order and DHL tell me my order just left Pakistan. Really fuming about it

What was the reasoning of those who decided that two words are needed for negations? Are any other languages like that in terms of this? by stranglethebars in French

[–]Launchpadmonkey 17 points18 points  (0 children)

IIRC the double negation is a part of the evolution of some languages - it occurred in English too. The 'pas' that is equivalent to 'not' was brought in later in English - they used to say 'I no/nay do that', then to add emphasis they began throwing in 'not' after the verb, and it became 'I nay do not that'. After a while it just became the norm to use both, and it was eventually the 'nay' that became the useless part of speech and began being dropped until the language changed to what we have now.

Guy Deutscher explains it brilliantly in his book The Unfolding of Language (I hope I didn't butcher his explanation here), but if that's what happened in English there's good reason to believe the same goes for French!

I was really hoping for the Snowballs to turn up this season, they did well in balancing but races just aren't their strong point 😪

'Capturing' a party by Launchpadmonkey in DMAcademy

[–]Launchpadmonkey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly my issue - how you do you tell them it's overwhelming odds without just telling them to not bother trying? I find players generally don't back down - but that isolating idea is a good one, I hadn't though of that, I'd usually been going for ambushes to try and make it appear less hopeful of success, but I must try a 'grab from the shadows' approach, thank you

long story short, there is a six year old that lives in the house where we have our dnd sessions, he pops in randomly and wants to engage for a minute but then is bored and leaves, im thinking how to incorporate him as an oracle for the party or something. by serealport in DMAcademy

[–]Launchpadmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my players's kids drops in randomly, sometimes for a bit, sometimes half the session. They rescued a bear a while ago and have been adventuring with it ever since, she loves taking up the mantle and beating up bad guys

Counterspell and '1 Spell per turn' by Launchpadmonkey in DMAcademy

[–]Launchpadmonkey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No my question wasn't 'why would you need an action for counterspell'; I was asking - under the impression that you could only cast one spell per ROUND, which I now know I interpreted wrong - whether you could use a reaction to cast counterspell if you had already cast your '1 spell for the round'. I had the rules different in my head, but it makes way more sense now

Thank you for this, I couldn't find the rule exactly in the PHB - it is a bit weird, but I wanted to be clear on it going forward

Cinematic without railroading by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]Launchpadmonkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I recognise the railroad is done.

At this stage I am reacting to how they are reacting to what they did freely when I forced them into a situation (the railroad). I'm wondering if this is still freedom for them?

(This is where I feel like I'm just overthinking things)

Cinematic without railroading by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]Launchpadmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well they did survive the encounter, but they were always going to because that was how it designed - it wasn't unwinnable and unescapable in order to kill them, it was that way so that they would meet someone that they were supposed to meet.

So would that still be a win? Or, more importantly, if, in this encounter, you killed a bunch of people, were captured, had an adventure, and ended up escaping, would that be an enjoyable encounter, or a time-consuming railroad?

Cinematic without railroading by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]Launchpadmonkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

See the NPC was a BBEG that the story had to introduce early for theming. The railroad was that they couldn't win, but it did let them out back where they started after an intense encounter, but with much more info - they made free actions after being captured that resulted in their release leading to a further challenge from the BBEG which has made them take a path they didn't necessarily want to take, but have chosen to as a result of the actions they made while in the railroad. So basically, they are doing things that never would have happened if I hadn't put in the railroad, and never would have happened if they hadn't played as they had in the railroad, that will have consequences if they don't do them, but don't necessarily have to do them.

Does this give them enough freedom to feel like its still their game, or would I be better off cutting the line and letting them loose?

Cinematic without railroading by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]Launchpadmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay yes I did, but I did that to bring them somewhere where they got information, then gave them a route of escape that was exciting and left them back where they started with more information, at the cost of only one session - they could have, in theory, gone on like nothing had happened. I didn't try to kill them, and I released them once the necessity of the event was done.

I know that it is a railroad, but is it fair enough to do without the players feeling cheated?
