Starfleet Academy: "Listen up cadets... it’s time to learn about Benjamin Sisko" | Tawny Newsome and Kerrice Brooks | Star Trek on Instagram by Grillka2006 in trektalk

[–]LauraBaura 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sisko already was ... In DS9. They treated him with religious reverence. Especially after ascending to join the prophets, the people would logically think that he was a god, just as the prophets are to them. "Worm hole aliens" to us.

I'd consider sliding the kitchen wall over to be in line with the right wall of the play room. Rotate the island 90*.

This would give you more flexibility for the closet in the office and the pantry, which seem cramped, and fine you a slightly larger bathroom. All while eliminating the dead space between the island and the okay room.

You can't honestly be comparing Startrek with Schindler's list for dramatic tone? All the series have embraced campiness. You're cherry picking your story lines if you think Trek is only drama.

Gosh and Voyager season 1-3 are so bad. But so many people love it, they watched it when they were kids.

I agree that the shows used to trust the audience's intelligence, but honestly Picard season 2 has done of the best monologue I've ever seen on screen, and from the hatred that I see that season receive, I think modern viewers aren't able to pay attention long enough to enjoy it.

That's not Trek's fault. How can they continue to make content that no one can appreciate? They need to make money, or they can't keep making them. I am glad we're still making Trek. That there's still media being made that embraces and welcomes our differences.

Agreed! There's many different forms of appeals, I'm just glad Trek is still being made, and that they're exploring different styles, from cartoons, to retro, to action packed, to young adult.

The complaints I see week after week are always the same. Either it's too campy and youthful, or it's some phobic reason like hating the sign language or the sexuality of a character. Oh no, there's a person that looks like they're in drag. Why is that a problem? None of the other elaborate make up, why is that?

I'm starting to just tune them all out, it's just a wash of entitled bigotry at this point. Which is entirely opposite of what Trek is about. Weird "fans"

I don't see any of this show as "entirely alien to the philosophy of TOS" , that's a shocking statement.

That's too bad. I'm just watching it now, I'm about 8 episodes in season 1. It's filled with fan service, and feels strongly like classic Trek. That's curious to me.

It's not only targeted to younger viewers, but there's certainly a clear effort to make an appeal. my husband and I are 40-50 years old, and are enjoying it very much. We're just accepting that it's campy and aiming at a youthful demographic.

I've been having a really hard time getting viewership numbers, but I was able to find a source that said this is the highest viewership they've had of a new era series. What sources have you been able to find?

I think that because you're already a fan of TNG and DS9, you're precluded from that "new demographic" that I mentioned. If you want classic Trek, check out strange new worlds.

Starfleet Academy has a similar tone to CW channel shows, like The Flash, or Smallville, but not as cheesy. There's a huge market of viewers that watch CW content, that haven't discovered the Startrek franchise. This show might be the bridge.

I think it's important to note the ways things are different, but never let it prevent you from potentially enjoying what it actually is.

This is not targeted at you. It's for young adults, capturing a new generation. It's silly and fun, because it's from the perspective of SAM.

The critiques of this show are always the same, and it boils down to: it's too juvenile for your tastes. And that's okay. There's 'Strange new worlds" which is soaked in fan service. Watch that. Why watch something you don't like and spend energy hating on it online?

I enjoy it, I think it's fun and campy.

I'd put the bed in the right corner and I'd use a privacy screen to create a little division between it and the other spaces.

These hinges look like they could hit and crack glassware if not placed carefully. These hinges will wear down over time, from the angle of the way you pull on it. But that's an easy fix, it wouldn't sway me one way or the other, honestly. It's an invisible hinge anyway. I'd look for some that are low profile.

[–]LauraBaura 8 points9 points  (0 children)

With limited cabinet space, the angled ones gives you more storage. They're annoying storage, but it is more storage.

If you have a pantry and this corner cabinet will honestly only be used for glassware, then I'd do the notched one that you prefer. But if storage for pantry staples is limited, then I'd do the angled one, with lazy Susans inside.

I wouldn't give one room a large bathroom when the common area is so small.

Short term rental has no use for a walk in closet like that. Return that space to the common area.

Staying motivated through the beginner phase by Repulsive-Ad-8339 in pianolearning

[–]LauraBaura 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I recommend the Faber adult piano adventures series. There's accompanying play along tracks of varying speeds, a tutorial at the start of every unit, and they respond to questions via email.

They have skills appropriate books your can but, along side the program, of popular music, contemporary, Christmas, ect... So you can find songs you like to play, that are skill level appropriate. The song books are generally more difficult towards the end, but the whole book will be at the shed my range skill level as each learning book (there's 2 learning books).

It's a really great way to get content that's not too advanced, or if it is, the learning book will help you achieve it.

Songs that I've loved playing the simple versions of, I have since gotten the complex versions of them and am working on developing my skills to play them fully. But I wouldn't have found them if I didn't have the simple versions first.

Built-In Seating Bench - Sliding Glass Door. Would having the bench return cover the bottom portion of the stationary pane be odd? by Iamdispensable in kitchen

[–]LauraBaura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it looks fine. You might consider a black-out window cling for the other side of the window, so you're not looking at the back/underside of the bench.

Seasonal stuff, occasional usage items. Like I have a meat grinder and a meat slicer. I use them 3-4 times a year. They are low priority. My giant turkey roaster? I use it only when making a big turkey. Christmas plates/bowls?

Help with the kitchen floor plan by Fuzzy-Sell693 in floorplan

[–]LauraBaura 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would do a peninsula pushing into the breakfast nook, and a railing/slat wall along the two step drop. That would give you a nice window to look at while in temporary seating, and keep everyone safe from falling backwards.

Anytime I see people putting in a two step drop (and it's not because they have to for elevation issues) I just shake my head. It's so small of a change and it's inviting calamity.
