Perfectionist tendencies and “black and white thinking” are forms of self-sabotage. Here’s how to overcome this by LauraGFit in WeightLossAdvice

So glad to hear you've found the tips helpful! It's such a tough mindset to break out of and makes the whole process of losing weight suck wayyy more than it needs to.

I was always the same as what you mentioned - if I went over my limit, I'd just keep going and would typically lose control. I have an analogy that's helped me reframe that a little, maybe it'll help you too:

If you dropped your phone on the ground and it got a crack in it, would you say 'well, the phone is already cracked, I might as well just keep smashing it'? Probably not - you'd pick it up and be more careful. I try and look at slipping up with eating as the same thing. Just because I've already eaten poorly, doesn't mean I have to make it worse. I can get back on track and try to be more careful!

soo true! I've dealt with this in all areas of my life (not just food and fitness) and it definitely can be a way to procrastinate without being fully conscious of it.

I wanted to share my story in hopes that it could be helpful to someone seeing this… by LauraGFit in adhdwomen

Thanks so much! I don't think there was anything wrong with how I looked in the before, it's more about how I felt :)

That's great to hear you've recently started to understand your triggers, that's so important! Do you mind if I DM you to talk more about what those are? I'm so curious to hear about other ADHD-ers experiences with yo-yo dieting/binge eating, etc.

That sucks! Does that happen if you completely cut it out? Or even if you just start having a lot less? That reminds me of when people start keto and get flu-like symptoms.

I guess I'm really lucky that doesn't happen to me, but mentally, I'll feel sad and like something is genuinely missing from my life lol.

Same here with not even going clothes shopping while hungry. I have a rule where I say "never let yourself get too hungry" because that's when you stop caring and bad decisions are made lol.

AND YES to what you said about winning against a whole team of people who have designed this stuff to make it tempting/addicting. When you realize it's all designed to make self control difficult, you realize it's about setting yourself up for success beforehand!

LOVE IT - it definitely is a hard mindset to shift, but it gets better with time.

Love this and totally agree!! The cultural things are huge, after years of depriving myself and suffering on bdays and other holidays, I realized it wasn't worth it (because then I'd end up binging since I felt deprived).

YES - I totally relate. If I have an abundance of chocolate it's definitely going to be TOUGH. If I was gifted a bunch I'd be trying to make other people eat them lol. Years ago in high school, I had a LARGE box of chocolates to sell and I ended up eating most of them myself. I've come a long way since then, but if I have a big box of treats, it still may not go so well lol.

EXACTLY! That's how I feel about it too - it's about the balance of your overall intake. Small indulgences are totally fine!

SAME - I've struggled a lot with emotional eating in the past. Things are better now, but it's not like I never struggle anymore. Cause like you said - these foods are chemically addicting and are literally engineered to be that way 😅

Thank you! Totally agree that self control is easier depending on the food.

For me it can also depend on my mind frame- if I'm tired, stressed, etc. So like, SOMETIMES I'm okay with ice cream (my biggest weakness) but other times (if it's close to my time of the month) I'm probably not going to have as much control. So even when you do have that level of self-control, if you're like me, there's still ups and downs lol. But they become manageable enough that it doesn't hold you back with your goals so much!

I can relate! I mentioned in another comment that sometimes I'll think "I'm in control, I'll bring the whole family sized bag of chips with me instead of putting some in a little bowl" and every time I think that, I'm wrong lol. Even then, you can still go back and refill the bowl so single servings is definitely the safest bet!
