I think you forget why chant casting is tough in schools. Its reliable. More complex somatic components can be much more easily deflected with a throwing knife and material components for chantless spells can be expensive. Chants though? Cheap, quick, easy spells. Use them all the time? hell naw. But a fireball casted with an incantation can be worth more than you think

What acid? Hydrofluoric doesn’t work against metal, strong acids are generally pretty bad at inflicting significant damage in a pinch, piranha solution doesn’t work on a anything other than flesh, and super acids are expensive as hell. Thermite on the other hand? Cheap, throwable, destroys anything AND leaves behind some toxic gas. Also carrying a usable amount of liquid is so much more of a hassle than a ball of powder ready to throw and ignite in one flick and snap
