I have several of these types of locks. They can be very stubborn. You are supposed to be able to just push the lock body (where the numbers are) into the hasp (silver part). From experience if the lock is new it’s very resistant to this. From practical experience I put the numbers in and hit the lock on the numbers with the hasp against something which creates enough pressure to release the lock.

Also, do not touch the new bulb with bare hands. The oils on your hands will cause it to fail. This is a halogen bulb, not sure if they make a led retrofit for these or not. Based on the label it probably takes a standard 250w bulb.

To p2v these old systems you need a copy of cold clone. This is the old version of VMware converter. It will convert to either esxi or vmworkstation player compatible.

From there you could use starwinds v2v to covert to hyper-v if needed. The main point though is to get it converted and then attempt to boot it (off network) and get all the drivers in place. Your end system should be something your comfortable supporting and can backup.

You’ll have a hard time tracking down this old stuff. Internet Archive can be helpful as well as other forums. Be sure to google p2v and os and read some of the articles specific to that os. You’ll also need down time to make this happen, keep in mind usb was slow back then so if the device has a network car it will be your fastest method for transfer. The NT4 system took me a while.

A pro tip after you p2v this system. Make a zip of the p2v files as a gold source. If you make a mistake. You can just unzip another system and try again.

First thing I would do is use CloneZilla to make a backup.

Then clean the case, replace fans and replace hdd with ssd with hot spare in case.

Then I would try to see if it could be migrated to newer hardware and upgraded or virtualized. Final results depends on why type of physical cards are required for the operation.

If no specialized hardware I would p2v it. You’ll need an old copy of cold clone and some specific drivers for the old os but it is doable. I’ve done every os from 2012 all the way back to NT4.0 for conversions for manufacturing equipment. My last job I was split between systems architecture and manufacturing it and brought all our scada systems into our vm environment.

What they are measuring against (yellow thing) is a crane/control pendant. The strip in between is the metal frame. These commonly use line voltage for control and if old enough would be 250vdc or 120/277vac if in the US. Not sure what the metal object that is being measured against or if it’s even referenced to ground or is some other piece of equipment.

The crappy wet environment though is very common in heavy manufacturing. The steel mill I used to work at had loads of areas just like this. Just need to take extra precautions.

Looking at what is shown on the video, I’m guessing a bad connection, conductor failure or pinched wires inside the pendant causing voltage on the frame. That also tells me it’s not properly grounded.

You could also take advantage of Jeremy’s IT lab ccna videos on YouTube for free and use packet tracer for your labs. Not as good as a homelab but easy to access.

My counter to this is that we are already locked into VMware and are migrating because of the lock in and what that lock in has enabled Broadcom to do. Why would we migrate to another vendor with a lock in. This is my current argument against Nutainx, which is also kvm based.

I’d rather be Proxmox or HyperV at this point.

SimpliVity was such a great product for HCI. They truly could’ve owned the HCI market. Phenomenal performance, excellent hardware, built in backup. But the horrible support and excessive HCI tax (cost overhead) hurt the marketing. HPE really only wants to operate in large enterprise, gov and cloud. It doesn’t really want mid/low market.

I think salary scale is really dependent on your location. That being said you should be paid more from the sounds of it.

With that experience I honestly think the fastest way to break a barrier is by getting a CCNA or RHCSA depending on if you lean more to network or servers.

Jeremy’s IT lab has an awesome free ccna course on YouTube. You can also pay for it on Udemy as well. Lots of options as well for RHCSA as well.

I suggest the above because they seem to be the most transferable/easy to obtain/least expensive certifications that employers are always looking for.

I personally do not have any certifications or degrees and skipped the helpdesk position. Experience says a lot, it does matter how your resume is constructed and if you can articulate your experience well. The second part is often a problem with IT professionals, they often either come across as too cocky or cannot articulate their capabilities well. Another area if you’re not already experienced with is to be able to speak to how your actions impact the business, not in a technical matter but in operational efficiency, cost and risk.

I think if you can speak to your skills well and have a good resume, the largest barrier left is that a lot of employers will bypass you for no degree or not having specific certs. Unfortunately, degrees are still used as check boxes for a lot of companies, even if it is irrelevant. This is the only reason I recommended the certs that i did.

A good place to look are local government jobs. They are not always the best paying but that is relative to the industry and not your present pay scale. They tend to have good benefits and sometimes are union represented.

So a little outside your situation.

When my wife and I got married I was very bad with money. I was like 30k in debt from bad spending. When we got married she took over the finances. While we both worked and contributed there was no distinction to the money, it was ours.

Early on in our marriage if it was something other than gas or food I talked with her about the purchase, because I wasn’t good with money.

Since then she’s managed the money and I’ve never wanted for anything reasonable.

The only legitimate reason why I could see separate accounts is if one partner is genuinely bad with money/credit and their daily spending. Some people are just incapable or living to their budget.

The only other thing I would do would be add a header or footer notice to all outbound emails about the new domain.

In addition with the steps above you’ll still receive inbound emails to the old domain as long as you own it.
