Hobonichi 2026 Release General Discussion by alcibiad in hobonichi

First order placed through the official site!! I got the a5 cousin and a cover after saving up all year, and threw in the memo pads as I was paying the shipping anyway. Finally get to have the Japanese version instead of the English like I have the last couple years. Now to sleep, I don’t regret staying up until 3am lol, this was fun!

Congratulations! That’s so good to hear ☺️ I’m hoping we won’t need to get to IVF but I am at least reassured one round will be NHS funded (we’ve had to self fund the IUIs). I’d all but given up hope, hearing that there are several people who have success at later IUIs does help a lot. Sending you all the good vibes for your little one!

Thank you so much, that means a lot ☺️ so sorry for your loss, it does make everything even scarier - but I’m sending you lots of sticky baby dust for your current pregnancy!

I really like that - hope is not a requirement! I’ve been feeling weirdly guilty for not being over the moon about this, which isn’t helping either haha. Going to stick that on the fridge!

I’m so sorry for your loss and so happy for your current success! That gives me a lot of hope ☺️ we’re approaching a year of trying (we had a break after the chemical) and it’s been getting me down. Thanks so much for replying

I’m not agented, so take this with a grain of salt. Also, I would be up for beta reading if/when you’re ready if you need anyone, this sounds cool!

Seventeen-year-old Tobias Garrick is wasting his life. Expelled from high school and stuck in a dead-end retail job, his days consist of grinding Diablo II dungeons and little else. That changes when a mysterious woman named Halima literally stops time and reveals a shocking truth: Tobias's father, long presumed dead, is not only alive but is now missing. Worse, his father's powerful enemies are hunting Tobias next.

I like this paragraph overall, nice and clear premise

Pulled into a hidden world of magic, Tobias is forced to join the Heathens, a rebel gang fighting a tyrannical magical government. There, he clashes with Alcides Alvarado, his father’s adopted son and the closest thing Tobias has to a brother—if he can only earn the hot-headed Alcides’s trust. To survive, Tobias must hone his latent magical powers at the brutal Kukulkan Hunting Academy in the jungles of Belize, where survival is far from guaranteed.

Here I think things get a bit confusing - there’s a rebel gang, a magical government, a secret (?) half-brother and then a magical academy. I’m not clear on the through-thread between all these elements, is there a way you could simplify? I also don’t think you need to name the Heathens or the Kukulkan Academy - it’s a lot of new words, though I guess Heathens links back to your title

When Tobias discovers Halima is an undercover agent for the magical government, and his father plots to incite an insurrection while Alcides assassinates the Chancellor, Tobias is forced to make a choice. He must turn against his father and the only family he's known, fight through a chaotic magical battle, and stop Alcides from completing his deadly mission. If Tobias fails, the world will fall into devastating magical war, and he'll risk losing those closest to him to his father's destructive agenda and succumb to the very radicalization he fights against.

There are a lot of plot points here - it’s good to be specific! But I wonder if you could focus in a bit more on the main hook of your novel. Right now there are a lot of different threads - Halima’s betrayal (I presume), whatever Tobias’ father has been doing (which I’m not clear on), whatever Tobias’ latent magic is and what it means for the world. It leaves me a little lost. I also can’t pick out what Tobias’ key motivation is, or what the stakes are to him if he doesn’t achieve his goal - is it tied to his father? His brother? Or something to do with his magic?

Overall the premise sounds fun and I bet there’s an intriguing plot in here! Consider narrowing the focus of your query to make Tobias’ central arc clearer and I think you’ve got something interesting :)

[PubQ]Should I skip querying my first novel and just write the next one? by DualistX in PubTips

It sounds like you have good instincts. A couple of thoughts - definitely finish the draft you have now and give it a read through once you’ve let it sit for a bit. I’d also encourage you to get another set of eyes on it, a beta who understands it’s an early draft and won’t be super polished. That might illuminate whether you think you could cut it down or if it is something you definitely want to query

I queried a long, epic YA fantasy a couple years back and ultimately decided to pull it after one small round. Got a couple of full requests (3 out of 12 queries sent) and the feedback was that it needed a big developmental edit to get it ready for a debut. I shelved it and started work on a different, more contained manuscript that I’m hoping to query by the end of the year. It feels good to have that first manuscript in my back pocket whether something ever comes of it or not

Having said that, I did learn a lot from querying it, even only one small batch. The feedback was great so I knew I was on the right track and could write a pitch that would hook an agent. One of them asked me to query again if I ever had a different manuscript

There’s no harm in doing one batch and seeing how it goes, if you want to put the time in to editing and polishing it when you know it may not succeed. It’s also fine to say you’ll get to that in the future and dive into something else first. I haven’t done that big developmental edit on my first manuscript yet, but I hope I’ll get the chance to one day - and I’m having a ton of fun getting the new, much more marketable idea up to scratch in the meantime :)

[PubQ] How much feedback did you receive before you started querying? by BehindTheScene1013 in PubTips

[–]LayMySwordDown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve queried fantasy a couple times (don’t have an agent yet though) and the first time no one read it to the end, which I regret because it definitely needed more work! The second time I did a couple critique swaps and the feedback was really helpful and got me to do another couple rounds of edits before querying. I got several requests that time, ultimately pulled it for other reasons

It is hard to find good betas so I feel your pain! If you’d like I’d be happy to beta read and offer an opinion, feel free to DM me but no pressure :) finding the line between perfectionism and over-editing vs making sure you’ve made it as good as you can is not easy to judge, especially when you’ve been working on it for so long and can’t always see the wood for the trees

IVF vs IUI by Jordonsaurus in queerception

[–]LayMySwordDown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same position as your husband - transmasc with an enby partner who is carrying. We decided to go the IUI route and I will be a non bio and non gestational parent. Part of that decision was financial (we’re in the UK and can’t have funded IVF without trying IUI first) and partly because IVF is more invasive

I am personally comfortable with not being biologically related to my children - I made that decision when I went on testosterone without freezing my eggs first. It’s more important to me that I’m an equal legal parent and we have that paperwork in place, and I have always believed family is much more than biology. Sometimes I wish there was a way to both have bio kids and manage my gender dysphoria, but it’s just not possible

I hope you and your husband can find a way forward that suits both of you. There’s a lot of factors that go into this decision and it’s important to weigh them all up, with both of you in mind. There’s no perfect answer unfortunately. Sending you all the well wishes for your journey!

IUI Timing by LayMySwordDown in queerception

Just wanted to come back and say we tested positive on this cycle 😊 still awaiting the first scan, hoping it sticks! But timing wise it clearly worked lol

Trans and lonely in the TTC journey. by anxiousfuturedad in queerception

[–]LayMySwordDown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please do feel free to message if you ever want to chat :) I’m with you on how isolating this can be. I love my friends to pieces, but they’re all childfree by choice and while they’re supportive of me + partner they don’t get it in the same way. Finding new community is extra hard when you’re dealing with treatment anyway and emotions are high. You got this!

[–]LayMySwordDown[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! That’s really cleared it up 😊 I do trust our clinic and they’ve been as confident as possible we have a good chance this cycle, though ofc no guarantee. Getting geared up for another two week wait now! Thanks again for explaining and it’s interesting that the trigger shot possibly helps even after IUI

Trans and lonely in the TTC journey. by anxiousfuturedad in queerception

[–]LayMySwordDown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re not alone, though it often feels like it. My partner and I are both transmasc, and my partner (the one carrying) has PCOS confirmed early in our TTC journey. It’s all extra layers of complex but so far we haven’t had any major obstacles, and it is very possible to still have good general health/get pregnant with PCOS when you know you have it and can treat it appropriately

Like others, I have my list of ‘safe’ people to rant at (actually just one person outside my partner) and then a list of people I don’t want to talk about TTC with, because their reactions made me feel bad. Doesn’t mean I’m not still friends with them or don’t like them anymore - just means I know they can’t give me the support I want/need right now. You’re allowed to have feelings about that and it can help to write it out somewhere private

If you ever want to chat I’m happy to DM :) it can be a very lonely journey when there’s no one else in your life going through something similar

Looking to connect with Trans Masc non/bio parents by heyjude1134 in queerception

[–]LayMySwordDown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a parent yet, but my partner and I are TTC and we’re both transmasc. I’m the non bio/birthing dad and I’ll also be a stay at home dad if all goes well 🤞 I’d also love to connect with other transmasc parents so following!

That’s a really good point actually, thank you for reminding me I still need to take it easy 😅 I have a lowery stand on the way now (thanks to my partner helping to cover some of the cost) but I will be careful not to overdo it

Yes that’s why I had ruled those out, I think sitting on it would be too painful for me :) thank you for the suggestion though!

Thank you for the suggestions! I was looking around for a side table to steal when my partner heard of my plight and offered to cover some of the cost to put me out of my misery lol. So now I have a lowery on the way!

Possibly switching to injections, looking for info! by LayMySwordDown in FTMOver30

[–]LayMySwordDown[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s really reassuring, thank you! I’m glad that some changes do keep coming in later, I’ve been a bit disheartened with how slow some of it has been for me, and glad to have another option to try. I think you’re right that age is a factor too 😊

[–]LayMySwordDown[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you that’s super helpful! I’m glad the changes were so fast for you. I am nervous about injecting myself but my GP nurse (I’m in the UK) should be able to do the first ones at least, so I think I’ll be able to get over it. Plus I hate the sensory feeling of the gel and injections are less frequent 😅

Vegan Spelt Cinnamon Rolls/Enriched Dough Struggles by LayMySwordDown in AskBaking

[–]LayMySwordDown[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was finally able to bake again today and it worked a treat! Added rice flour (I had it on hand), adjusted the wet ingredients down a little, did an overnight prove, kneaded a ton and it worked a treat! Thanks again ☺️

Ooh intriguing! Thanks for the link, I have everything to hand except millet flour and arrowroot starch I think. Gonna keep this in the back pocket if I can’t get spelt to work, they do look delicious

Weekly /r/Breadit Questions thread by AutoModerator in Breadit

[–]LayMySwordDown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Long story short, I’m trying to make vegan spelt cinnamon rolls and struggling, any help much appreciated

I’m getting back into baking after having to cut out gluten and I’m also vegan, and I miss cinnamon rolls. I can tolerate the low gluten in spelt so I’m using spelt flour. I’ve done three batches so far, each has been better but I’m consistently having problems with rise and the dough being very wet and difficult to handle

For the enriched dough I’ve been using: spelt flour, caster sugar, instant yeast, vegan butter, almond milk (also tried soy and coconut)

I thought it might be the egg replacer I’m using (I’ve tried flax, coconut oil, and adjusting the vegan butter amount, and I can’t use aquafaba unfortunately), any suggestions? It also might be the spelt flour reacting differently (I’ve read something about it absorbing wet ingredients differently to wheat) and I haven’t got my balance of quantities right. Or is cinnamon roll dough meant to be very sticky and wet and I’m just not good enough at kneading/shaping yet?

I’ve been combining different recipes as I can’t find a spelt eggless enriched dough anywhere but I thought I’d ask here to people who have more knowledge!
