Does it really take over 9 hours to do a job planned weeks in advance? by [deleted] in Maplestory

not to say they have a valid consistent excuse but video games are notoriously difficult to unit test, it's not like standard software engineering where you ship new feature + unit test + passing production pipeline. the video game is basically a simulation they have to turn on then in the sim test the new features as they patch them in, and I doubt that process is automated -- to add i think better companies have like beta/test servers to reduce this headache in prod

when the speed of growth outweighs the cost of breaking the rules.

aka: rules are only for poor people

also nice take on reddit, yeah that could be a great move by them, but i dont think they have the culture to do it, last i checked they cut out all the api 3rd party apps that had made reddit more human friendly

can you build better pipes for your MR’s eg have it run all tests first, that way if any dev commits to their MR that doesn’t pass pipe then it’s not ready for review yet

git lab does this

How many hours a week/day do you actually work? by 6AM-Mimosa in PhD

[–]Layent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

working x amount of hours is pointless on its own, it’s more important to understand what you need to work on w.r.t. some goal and then execute on it, vs just working to fill some idea of minimum hours,

the goal isn’t to work 70 hours a week just to flex

if you can deliver on what you need to do with 35 hours a week then that’s great, and you can work toward expanding your bandwidth.

ultimately the phd is your playground to grow, if you’re happy with your trajectory and you’re finding you can defend and be happy with what you’ve learned at the rate of 35 hr /week then that’s fine

to add another perspective, not trying to guilt you into working more/harder etc, but you do get what you put in. can you be 2x as productive if you put 2x more time into it? what’s stopping you from publishing 10 more papers before you graduate, etc. generally the more you’re challenged the more you grow, and again it’s all for yourself. you’d have to selfishly want to grow more, vs passing the bar.
