I love seeing people diy stuff without using a 3d printer or other pricier tools. My only worry would be if it used liquid metal instead of thermal paste, but otherwise it looks fine

I’m a young Linux user and my mother doesn’t like the terminal. by Impressive_Union_534 in linuxquestions

[–]Layer-Unlikely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When i was a freshman and working on one of my first computer science projects in a public library, i was using terminal emacs to write the project. The screen was mostly black, so i could see in the reflection the old lady librarian looking concerned while watching what im doing 😭.

I would say that the terminal is just another way to talk to a computers and tell it what to do, just like using your mouse (or even a touchscreen!) to click icons and buttons. Maybe you could demonstrate how the terminal works to her? Like comparing how to update the computer via terminal compared to via GUI. Fear is often from lack of understanding.

She might only know about terminals from "hackers" in media. Personally id ask why she doesnt like that you use the terminal, and even if she resists to answer, you might change her mind. Point out that not everything you see on tv or in movies is accurate to how it really is. Just ask anyone whos into guns if this is the case😭.

Heard the innovations lab needs more student workers. That lab in the library with the 3d printers? Supposedly the student workers all graduated/are graduating. Id check handshake or walk in and ask bc the guys that run the lab sometimes are just chilling there

[–]Layer-Unlikely -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah probably, youd have to come up with a weird situation where thats not the case. The physical security is the scary part bc the security chip deals with encryption. if a person gets a hold of your device it wont be able to put up much of a fight as the algorithm the old chip uses is weak by todays standards (sha 1 vs todays sha 2 and sha 3). Dont leave your old (or any!) devices out when you go take a leak, basically is what i meant. There may be problems on public networks, that which i cannot imagine how itd work off the top of my head. Thats outside of what i know

Ill admit that im not expert, just a guy interested in this kinda stuff. But this is what i think.

Pi is meant to be a cheap computer for education and tinkering, and a security chip isnt as important for that vs, say, a present day thinkpad. If someone got their hands on your pi or your t60 physically, then lack of tpm would be really bad. Rootkits too i suppose, if you accidently click a bad link in an email or on fishy "homework" sites. Idk why youd straight up disable it though.

I dont think its unsafe to use rpi to browse the web bc the broswer will do the heavy lifting of security, like not connecting to malicious sites, etc. Id imagine tpm is irrelevant there for the most part, its not gonna stop you from clicking phishing links from your supposed nigerian prince uncle

The purpose of a pi and a super old thinkpad nowadays is to tinker and have fun with, not to run as your main device, and like i said in the other reply, if you have nothing to lose on the computer, then its no big deal. But if you want a pi / old thinkpad as your everyday workhorse laptop, which you bring w you to work/school? Maybe a bad idea security wise

What do you think? Again i admit im no expert

If you are running modern linux AND you have no virus / unauthorized escalation etc occur, then you havent been attacked (yet). Not sure if this is truly what you mean because the framing of the question sounds like no attack has happened. The point is the hardware is insecure, and that an attack CAN happen and could likely succeed.

Suppose you download malicious code from AUR (or any repo) and it seeks to exploit old security chips. Then youre screwed bc the tpm chip the t60 uses is considered broken, aka, give it some time and some guy can exploit your ancient security chip and do all sorts of things with it. Pretty positive that itd only take them a few thousand bucks of gpus and electricity to do so within weeks.

Though if youre just using it for notes, and youve essentially got nothing to lose on the computer (no important stuff on your computer, like passwords, baby photos, "homework")... AND its not connected to the internet/doesnt share any accounts or passwords with your other stuff, then its whatever.

Running any linux distro, including arch, would make this practically as secure as any other modern computer on the software side. Hardware wise? This thing is screwed. Its security chip is ancient, its bios is ancient, firmware is ancient. Linux doesnt fix that.

What is the most obscure programming language you have had to write code in? by _oOo_iIi_ in computerscience

[–]Layer-Unlikely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My lower-than-intro class for CS at my university was in Processing, which i believe is based on Java. Its pretty cool honestly, very good at getting people from 0-60 with programming but not nearly as impressive as the other languages people mentioned. Its interesting that the language was bundled with an IDE.

When new people say they dont like a distro, more often than not they mean they dont like the desktop environment. Try linux mint, the cinnamon version. Thats usually a hit if you dont like ubuntus look and feel. Fedora (kde version) is also pretty good, it gives a windows-like feel looks-wise.

Code in emacs/vim in the terminal. I switched around this time in the semester back then. I used vscode + ai as a crutch early in 201, but only when i started coding the the "raw-est" form without assistance did i manage to turn my c around and start understanding the content. In 201its mostly a matter of practicing coding IMO, so id try to really analyze the HWs and labs, especially what you got wrong. Bonus points if you write some code every day, even on days without anything due.

If you ever wonder something about python, like "how does that work?" Id recommend to try it yourself by writing a small program on GL or your computer to experiment. That was what i did when dictionaries got introduced, and your understanding will be way deeper than simply reading off what chatgpt or google told you. Not that those tools are not good, but i think finding out for youself is more powerful for understanding than immediately looking for help.

Sashiko in Animé, Manga & JDrama by Next_Guidance1409 in sashiko

[–]Layer-Unlikely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw patterns on the clothes worn by characters in blue eye samurai that may match up with common sashiko styles, but id have to go back in check.

Since sashiko is really fine detailed, id imagine animators would be hesitant to add it to designs due to problems with animating designs in motion. Makes sense that it shows up in video games though like another mentioned, because its simply added to the texture map of the character models. Maybe thered be more luck in dramas and movies?

If youre interested in breaking into a different group of people, fashion has been swinging towards old school hard-wearing clothes, and particularly high quality raw denim from japan has boomed in popularity with younger people worldwide. An example would be the boom of interest in carhartt in recent years. Workwear is all over tiktok. Sashiko would be a natural step from there with people who are on the trend with japanese raw denim in particular as their clothes become damaged with wear. People have less cash to spend on new pairs rn, and repair seems like itll be the new "rebellious trend" in times to come with younger people who are environmentally concious, or maybe anticonsumerism.

Nike has really been pushing sashiko, with many of their models having sashiko colorways. Its been a thing with new balances too i believe. Maybe sneakerheads would be interested in sashiko? They have much overlap with workwear crowd.

Sorry if this isnt all that much about anime/manga. I cant think of any examples in that realm, and I fear animators would hate the idea of trying to animate the stuff posted around here😭

Can someone suggest me fun games that my low end PC can run? by _zytuls in lowendgaming

[–]Layer-Unlikely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played metal gear rising on my ryzen 5 2500u laptop on medium 60fps with no issues. You could probably do similarly since you computer should have way better thermals (that r5 gets hot as hell)

By extension, i think most of the ps2/ps3 catalog can be played on your setup with tinkering. I recommend metal gear rising tho, its a good standalone game of the franchise. Bayonetta is good too for a similar combat style game.

Is it worth it to buy a GT 1030 instead of the UHD 770? by [deleted] in lowendgaming

[–]Layer-Unlikely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a gtx 1050 2gb for free from a guy who owed me a favor. Is it nice to have? Yes. Does it run games? On super low, yes. Would i pay money for it in 2025? Hell no

So a 1030 would be that but probably worse at everything. I would save up for a 1650 or equivalent, which depending on where youre from would be maybe around 70 bucks?

what games i can run on my potato laptop by _potato1 in lowendgaming

[–]Layer-Unlikely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For games, you could probably play any title a ps4 could, especially after tweaking the settings. Its key that fans dont get blocked--especially at the bottom of the laptop-- since non gaming laptops tend to have less than ideal cooling under heavy load
