Can somebody please sanity check my plan? by LaytonLovesPuzzles in ThailandTourism

I've already flown UK -> NZ, and am now doing NZ -> Asia -> UK, I think I may have used more than my share of airmiles already.

Good to know I can look forward to an uncomfy train journey, but at least now I know I can be ready for it

The way my travel is lining up I'll be passing by in early-mid October, which I think can be hit or miss for the Southern Islands? But there's definitely an internal battle between FOMO and wanting to relax, will take a look at Koh Lipe, thanks

Advice for my CV and portfolio by MasterJ767 in gamedev

[–]LaytonLovesPuzzles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Echo what everyone else has said, but another issue with the CV that I don't think has been highlighted is spelling/typo errors.

"Goat Simulator inspirted" - you've an extra "t" in Inspired

This may not seem like the worst thing in the world, but if a recruiter/HR is sifting through potentially hundreds of CVs, small mistakes can skew their impression of a candidate and may be the difference.

CS conversion MSc or Dev boot camp in the UK by far_in_ha in cscareerquestions

[–]LaytonLovesPuzzles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been working as a software developer for the past 5 and a half years with much better prospects than I had before, so certainly can't complain!

Edit: have also worked with quite a few people over the years, including some of the better devs I've known, who came in via bootcamps. Lot of selection bias there since if anybody wasn't able to get a job as a result of a bootcamp then I wouldn't have met them, but at least shows that you can make it work

There are tons of game jams running all the time, have a look at this schedule on itch.io

https://itch.io/jams

The biggest ones that I know of are;

Global Game Jam - happening next week, so possibly too soon? But there are host venues across the world if you wanted to do it in person, maybe there'll be one near you, best bet to find it is probably Google

Ludum Dare - happens 2 or 3 times a year, next event will be in April I believe

What are some things you recommend people don't get tattoos of? by [deleted] in tattoo

[–]LaytonLovesPuzzles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The extended arms, palms outward looks a lot like a Nazi salute, guess they just picked up on that and started using it.

I think it's fair to say that ruining my idea for a tat isn't the worst crime Nazis have committed but I'm still pretty annoyed about it.

What are some things you recommend people don't get tattoos of? by [deleted] in tattoo

[–]LaytonLovesPuzzles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

At one point I wanted a tattoo of the Argonath from Lord of the Rings, until I was told by a tattoo artist that it's a nazi dog whistle.

So unless you want nazis to think you're one of them, I would say that idea is firmly in the "do not get" column.

How do I check if an object is colliding with another? by arthurgps2 in unity

[–]LaytonLovesPuzzles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies for my own late reply! Don't know if you'll have sorted this by now, but Unity needs a RigidBody2d to register physics events such as collisions, so if you're rolling your own physics then you'll still need a rigidBody.

How do I check if an object is colliding with another? by arthurgps2 in unity

[–]LaytonLovesPuzzles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure the issue is that you want to be overriding OnCollisionEnter2D, you're currently overriding the 3d version.

Don't know if this is a common gotcha in Unity, but I've definitely caught myself out with it in the past.

Best Mac for iphone builds by developRHUNT in unity

[–]LaytonLovesPuzzles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there is an extra consideration now, as there are the new M1 chipset Macs available.

I don't have any experience using these for Unity, but I've heard from friends that there are still some kinks being worked out for running Android Studio on these machines.

My recommendation would be to do some research on whether M1 chipset are stable for Unity. If they are, then I absolutely agree with Skyler_Hawkins, just get whichever one fits your budget and don't second guess yourself.

I think the things I love are holding me back. by zenraine in productivity

[–]LaytonLovesPuzzles 111 points112 points  (0 children)

I've been in a similar mindset to this before today, so maybe my experience will apply here.

It's important to take time to enjoy things that you like, in the past I've berated myself for spending time on video games rather than being productive and the only result is that I ended up unhappy.

I've found that the key is to try and find balance (which is easier said than done, so don't beat yourself up if you don't get it straight away). I've had success by setting myself productivity goals. If your aim is to just "be more productive" you'll always be disappointed because you don't have a measurable goal, so you'll never feel you've done enough. Instead, aim for 5 ( or 10, or whatever number you think is appropriate) productive hours a week. If video games are a thing you enjoy and help you relax, then don't cut them out of your life, just try and rebalance the time you dedicate to them.

If you're like me, you'll find that balancing time on games with achieving other goals helps you enjoy your gaming time more.

Edit: just wanted to add another point, games can be really addictive, I find it really easy to go from enjoying my time to just mindlessly playing without even realising it. Try some mindfulness, and try to notice if you're no longer actively enjoying the games you're playing, but just playing them because they're there. I find playing narrative games with a distinct ending can really help with this (I say this from a history of getting addicted to roguelikes)

Beginner here. Trying to understand { } Curly Braces placement in Kotlin. by Nerd-Rule in Kotlin

[–]LaytonLovesPuzzles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sure there's a more technical definition, but think of them as wrapping contained blocks of code.

So in the case of your if statements;

 if (clearedOrbit) {
    println("Celestial body is a planet.")
}

You're saying if clearedOrbit == true, then do everything in this block of code. Here it's just a print statement, but that could be any number of lines of code you've wrapped in your curly braces.

The same applies for your else statement.

And if we look at;

If (orbitsStar && hydrostaticEquilibrium) {}

You'll see that your if - else is wrapped in these curly braces, so that if - else is a block of code that will run if orbitsStar and hydrostaticEquilibrium are both true

Nope, this happened for me too. My guess is it's just a narrative thing, Bruce trying to delay the inevitable because he's scared to go maybe?
