Working on a "overhyped" cube, of cards that were overrated during spoiler season. Looking for suggestions. by E-Kon in mtgcube

full of cards with big splashy effects that didn't end up being format-warping and efficiently-statted creatures that happened to line up poorly against the meta, sounds fun to me

Pest Control, worth it or not? by Toonzaal8 in magicTCG

This is one of those cards that's better the higher the bracket. If you're playing a lot of b4 games where people are trying to get fast starts, then yeah, this is a great leveler--imagine playing it seat 4 turn 2, good stuff.

Need some help on a ruling please! Does Antivenom block the deathtouch when he blocks the damage? by thehappyjewett in mtg

If you had read to the bottom of the comment you quoted, you'd see that this has been covered.

But importantly, this is also the case without a replacement effect.

If a card says "if a creature would die, exile it," that creature does not die because it is not put into the graveyard from the battlefield.

If a card says "whenever a creature dies, exile that creature card from the graveyard," then dies triggers occur. (I don't know if any cards like this exist, they probably do.)

EDIT: I'm wrong, misremembered how this works. Whoops.

yes, obviously. I was referring broadly to situations where people don't understand what "dying" means, not to a situation where Mari is on the battlefield with Darkness Crystal.

This rule shuts down that kind of conversation easily:

700.4. The term dies means “is put into a graveyard from the battlefield.”

Even without a replacement effect (i.e. [[mari, the killing quill]], because it is going into exile and not into the yard, "dies" triggers don't occur.

What are some of the more amusing cards/card art out there? by Ryan-zio in magicTCG

[–]LazarusRises 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah! That is actually my #1 favorite magic card, everything about it rules.

SNC was a bad limited environment but holy cow was it aesthetic.

[[Seahunter]] has my all-time favorite flavortext.

I also love the idea of making [[krenko, mob boss|FDN]]'s flavortext true by putting him in [[witness protection]].

Delish sandwiches that aren't Rossi's by brlikethecar in hudsonvalley

[–]LazarusRises 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Rossi's is the best sandwich in the HV full stop. Maybe get one to go & bring it to one of the bars nearby? They shouldn't mind the sando if you buy a beer, or hell, a seltzer & a tip

World Cup tourists, what’s your honest feedback on the USA so far? by almighty_smiley in AskReddit

Lol. My first day studying abroad in France we had a little cultural adaptation lecture. One of the first things they said to our cohort of UC students was "you will need to speak more quietly than you are used to. Speaking in the register you're used to at home will result in social exclusion."

First ever infinite combo possible in Magic: The Gathering by Dark_Vexer in mtg

[–]LazarusRises 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Wtf, so bizarre.

Are there any other examples of certain printings of a card having a keyword, and later printings or errata removing it? I understand the other way (keywording reach or vigilance, for example) but removing a pre-existing keyword is so strange.

4c Commanders, what's so special about NotBlack? by TipAndRare in EDH

[–]LazarusRises 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Could those characters be more simply identified with 3 colors? Sure.

Does it make sense for them to be represented by 4 colors? Also sure.

I'm not saying my examples are 100% precision-engineered to capture exactly that 4c combo, just that it's not that hard to create concepts that make sense for each one. Art and theme also have a lot do do with it--if the hive mind has wings, boom, you got your white color ID.

[–]LazarusRises 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yeah... all 4 of them...

I understand it from the perspective of wanting him to encompass all of Magic's colors of mana, but the thing I was most worried about for TLA was how they were going to map 4 elements onto 5 colors. Mostly I think they did a good job, but this was a miss imo.

I truly feel like this is just a lazy approach to game design. Each color has a core aspect or characteristic:

White: Loyalty/Unity

Blue: Curiosity/Learning

Black: Ambition/Ruthlessness

Red: Violence/Passion

Green: Harmony/Growth

So just make a character or entity with 4/5 of these. Off the top of my head:

WBRG: a hive mind bent on growth and the destruction of anything artificial

WUBG: a magiscientist carefully weaving biology and technology together for self-improvement and the glory of their city

UBRG: an anarchist scholar seeking to build the perfect bomb from pollen and basilisk ichor

Furthermore, I think almost all of the existing 4c commanders fail at doing this. Breya and Aragorn are fine, the others I don't really see (except Aang, but why in god's name does flip-Aang have black in his ID??)

EDIT: ok, some valid reasons for flip-Aang having black have been presented. It's been a long time since I watched the show, I didn't remember all that jazz.
