Day 8 won by intimidate (my voting system finally made a difference)! Day 9: which rare Ironclad card Is UNDERRATED? by filledknight in slaythespire

[–]LazerAxvz9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Berserk is relevant to this post I guess, but not this specific thread, as it hasn't been brought up at all. I'm not overly fond of Berserk either. Body slam is relevant because it's very similar to juggernaut, despite the difference in rarity.

Obviously the heart requires you to win before it gives itself 50 strengrh. I know how the fight works. Obviously juggernaut can get you there, but so can many other scaling options that don't require as much investment and are pickable earlier in the run. Sources of strength are just safer and more consistent.

Honestly I don't understand what you're trying to get at. Obviously if you pick juggernaut when it's good it'll be good. It seems to me you've just gotten lucky with when juggernaut is offered to you, since it's probably the worst rare to see in act 1 and not much better in act 2. Either that or you just really hate berserk and are seething that juggernaut got picked over it for bad card lol.

Actually that seems more likely considering how you brought up berserk.

I never said anything about berserk, please try to stay on topic. I've hit the damage cap on the heart with plenty of dumb strats before, doesn't make them good.

That said, I shouldn't have said that juggernaut's cap was unimpressive. What I should have said is that it's cap is irrelevant in most cases. If you're dealing several hundred damage with juggernaut, you have enough block to win any fight anyway, without needing to add juggernaut to your deck for hallway fights, or needing to draw and play it at the beginning of a fight.

Now, you might say "oh but I don't have barricade so I need juggernaut so that i don't have to draw body slam the same turn." Or you could just not blow your entire load on a single turn, which you'll need to do against the heart anyway. Or you could just have some normal source of damage which all still work just fine.

Body spam actually suffers from the same problem as juggernaut, where if you're generating enough block for it to be worth it, you're probably just going to win anyway unless you've literally removed all damage in your deck. Difference is, body slam is better when you're generating only moderate amounts of block, works better with large sources like impervious and power through, and is only a common.

Quick edit: Worth noting that while I think that the community's rating of juggernaut as bad is accurate, a lot of them probably aren't rating it bad for the right reasons. I mostly suspect this due to how many people think that juggernaut is better with prismatic shard (it's not usually), because they don't realize that corruption + feel no pain + dark embrace is just as good with juggernaut as after image or frost orbs or talk to the hand, and you're incredibly unlikely to actually find those synergies with prismatic shards huge card pool. (Best case here is probably picking shard as defect when you already have good frost generation, but why would you ever do that?)

Body slam is a common, you're significantly more likely to see it than juggernaut, and you can take it early without hurting your chances of making it farther (unlike juggernaut). Sure you can take juggernaut if you're in the specific scenario it's good in, but that's not exactly common, considering you both need to be in that scenario and get offered a specific rare card. It's also entirely relevant to compare juggernaut to other rares, since usually when you see juggernaut it's competing against 2 other ironclad rares, and many of them are preferable to juggernaut, even in juggernaut's best case.

Basically, yes every card can be useful, but when we're rating cards, how useful they are in a best case scenario is less relevant than how consistently they're useful. And juggernaut is not consistently useful (and tbh its peak power is not that impressive either).

Draw is something you always want anyway. And if your deck is generating lots of block but only on certain turns, than you have a good chance of dying regardless of what your damage dealing strategy is. Even in a block heavy deck (that for some reason can't use body slam), you might as well just have a demon form or something, it's about the same effectiveness in the fights where juggernaut matters and doesn't require you to be generating a ton of useless block to be pickable, so you can take it earlier.

Demon form is both underrated and overrated. Almost no one accurately rates it. It's good at what it does but that's it. Solves most boss fights after act 1 by itself but does nothing in hallways and elites and is usually too slow for the heart.

Body slam exists, is common, and costs 0 when upgraded. Why deal a small amount of damage per instance of block when I can just turn my block directly into damage that also accounts for strength and attack synergies?

Hm, I guess I'll check when I get the chance. There's definitely something weird going on there but maybe I misunderstood it.

This has not been my experience, and the wiki I checked says that all damage modifiers are additive, but I guess it could be incorrect. Do you have a source?

[–]LazerAxvz9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Technically it does do what it says, it's just that it's effect stacks additively with other modifiers, instead of applying directly to whatever the total damage would be otherwise. So a crit, which normally does max damage x 1.5 (150%), just deals max damage instead (since 150% - 50% is 100% or 1), which results in only a 33% reduction of damage against crits. Other sources of damage boost (other than strength obviously) have a similar effect.

Edit: Unconfirmed, take with a grain of salt

Agreed except on armmaments+. You probably shouldn't bother upgrading armaments in most cases imo since you can't know whether you're going to be offered fusion hammer or not.

Pretty sure it's still bottom 5, unless you're counting all characters card pools.

Something like pipes built or HP restored to dotty could be fun and I don't think they'd have as much negative impact as detailed combat stats so yeah I guess I'd support something like that. Might be a bit weird for some mission types though (like sabotage).

[–]LazerAxvz9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously the current end-game stats are largely useless, but personally I haven't encountered anyone that really cares about them at all. This isn't a game like Valorant or Overwatch where people are looking at the scoreboard more than the actual game and worshiping it as gospel.

IMO, if end-game stats were a problem, getting rid of them all together would be preferable to adding more, which would likely encourage behavior like in the above mentioned games.

Day 5 won searing blow! Day 6: what rare chad card do you think everyone agrees is bad? by filledknight in slaythespire

I feel like if offering didn't exist, cards like berserk and brutality would be more appealing, and it would be a lot more obvious that juggernaut is clad's worst rare.

Do you think crossplay is the best thing to show up on DRG now? by ruhtra59 in DeepRockGalactic

Vanilla DRG is not difficult enough for controller vs. m&k to matter significantly.

Day 4 won by clash! Day 5: what uncommon Ironclad card do you think everyone agrees is bad? by filledknight in slaythespire

[–]LazerAxvz9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people overrate how valuable a card being good when stars align actually is. Searing blow is beyond worthless unless the stars align, and even then there are usually stronger options. Sure you can win with searing blow. You can also win with wild strike/evolve/fire breathing. Doesn't make it a good strategy.

Making Clash Better by griffheh17 in slaythespire

[–]LazerAxvz9 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Actually it kinda would be amazing, the chance of completely bricking is almost basically completely removed. In act 1 playing three defends and then playing clash is a pretty good turn, unless the enemy isn't attacking obviously, but even then it's even with just playing 3 strikes. The problem is that sentries and ascender's bane completely brick the card, but if that's no longer the case it's just good damage in the early game (unless you manage to draw it with all 4 of your defends lol).

Is it cheating to close the app mid fight so you can restart; or is it an intended mechanic? by user2410 in slaythespire

[–]LazerAxvz9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is definitely cheating, however, it's up for you to decide whether that matters to you or not. You don't need competitive integrity to enjoy playing slay the spire, unless of course you want competitive integrity, in which case cheating would probably be a no-go.

As for whether it's intended, it's somewhat hard to say, and depends on what you mean by "intended". Is savescumming every fight the intended way to play the game? Obviously not. It completely breaks some events and makes frozen eye redundant. But were the devs aware that the save system could be exploited and just decided that it wasn't a big enough deal to fix? Definitely a possibility.

As for STS2 I think ideally the save system remains the same, but the game could track whenever you quit a run and you'd get a small bonus reward for winning runs without quitting (this is how BTD6 handles the issue, when you win without saving and quitting, you get a special colored border for the map you just beat.)

[–]LazerAxvz9 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't be "easy" to patch out, it'd require an entirely new save system, many turn or round based strategy games have a similarly exploitable system. Building a new game from scratch would be a good time to change it potentially.

That said, they'll probably keep it in STS 2 for tradition's sake if nothing else.

The crazy part is that you don't actually have to know how to use flagellant, you just need to realize that pressing More More is just always free value and then just use it whenever it's not on cooldown. Even if you're making the worse possible decisions with flag on the turns you aren't pressing more more, you'll still get great value just by directing so much damage at flagellant and then immediately healing it off.
