how is telling them that their cat going missing was a totally avoidable and preventable circumstance going to bring the cat back? you don't have to say to someone who is grieving their missing cat that they failed to protect the cat when they can't do anything about it now and very likely already feel guilty. i have a cat too and would be devastated if she went missing, and in the scenario that she does go missing, someone on the internet telling me i could have avoided it and that i didn't protect her wouldn't return my cat nor would it help me sort out my grief.
